  1. Ya Hurricane Point has bad bits but that is at very north part of lake. This area is at very south part of Big Island maybe 3-4 miles south of Hurricane Point. We trolled Hurricane Point for 'skis but nada. It isn't called DSI either Thanks for replies.
  2. You know where i was at there Shayne. Will submit somethings before year end for tourney, still time
  3. What you mean pray tell? I remember a decent report and good times there from you Fidel, years ago.
  4. Ya those essays ahead of hers are nearly unreadable and suspect. Your daughters essay is the best and she won just by being clear minded and not polluted like the submissions ahead her.
  5. I would recommend going there! Mostly white mucky bottom due to ancient seashell sedimentation. The fish caught are silvery coloured due to bottom. Musky, walleye and bass are there. Using real worms on harnesses trolled slowly along might produce something or a shallow running small musky bait might surprise. Your wife would be happy and stuff can be caught on this small lake.
  6. Haven't really fished much this year for different reasons (mainly illness) so was glad to get out Saturday for a bit, only third day out since musky opened. Was worried about thunderstorms and the sun beating down on us but it was mainly cloudy with some sprinkles here and there Always figure to target muskies at Pigeon and started off trolling Jakes and Believers in open deeper waters, no fish were caught. So ended up throwing spinnerbaits and topwaters for bass mostly, as usual. Some decent bass are usually caught but yesterday was all small smallies and rock bass. Like fish shown here... So we went down to south end of Big Island to a rocky spot that has a huge reef coming up to about 1 foot deep. Have always done well for smallmouth here but today just a bunch of 1 lbers and WGSF's. This shallow rocky reef covers about 400 square yards and is unmarked and submerged. Over past 20+ years i've seen no markers but yesterday i saw some bleach jugs marking reef. Dave spotted something odd on a shallow flat rock, so we looked and he pulled this out... This part was completely sheared off. The depth would probably be about 2 ft. for at least 100 yards in any direction. This was a big boat, seems the outcome would have been nasty no matter what. Must be why someone finally decided to mark the reef. Not far from here there are channel markers where musky folks trolled. I never fished there until earlier this year. Decided to troll a firetiger musky spinnerbait. Ended up catching this musky as we were going into shallower weedy water. Thought i caught a weedmass until felt strong headshakes. Didn't measure fish but maybe it was 35 in. Had a great day outside and caught a musky. Gotta love going out fishing
  7. Some nice fish and a good time with your daughters can't be beat!
  8. Those are amazing photos! These photos make identification easier showing the size and more clearly showing the thin upper beak etc... . That bird is almost size of cardinal not a small finch Cardinals are my favorite birds around here.
  9. Some nice fish there! Looks like the sun got your face those days.
  10. Back in the mid 90's i entered an (all year) large Canada-wide multi-species fishing competition. The couple of years i did enter, always won 'Pike angler of year' just from 2-3 boat trips to the Toronto Harbourfront in the spring. Had many days of dozen pike 35-42 inches. Beating others from NWT, Manitoba, Quebec etc... It is an underused fishery mainly due to needing a Harbour permit. Geez, gotta find the time to get one...
  11. Great report! Lots of fish and fun by the looks of it.
  12. Tonight and early morning are supposed to be peak. Will take a look!
  13. bump... lots of shooting stars next few nights
  14. Being in a boat is way better, allows to cover much more water, especially around the islands. Those are amazing fish, good to see such a robust fishery at the doorstep of Canadas largest city. Try in the fall, larger ones can be found.
  15. If you are outside and it is clear next couple of days Lew, you should see the meteors where you are. Saw some last night, in the city here, after dusk even.
  16. Last night i saw a couple of very bright shooting stars, right here in downtown Toronto. The Perseid meteor shower is starting. The peak is to be around 4-5 am(lew o'clock) Friday. Anytime it is dark and clear the next few days it is worth a look. Especially away from city lights. Just a heads up! Cheers
  17. Nice fish! Never caught a walleye on a topwater, but many slightly below surface on original rapala at night. Looks like fun was had
  18. Shad are definately in the Great Lakes and have been for long, long time. Don't think they are in central kawarthas but with a perch or sunfish pattern or some chartreuse; shad body baits are still good. Have zebra mussels cleared out Jack/Chandos et al?...i don't know Like the idea of translucent baits being natural. Maybe pinks do mimic light shining through blood, skin etc...
  19. Was talking recently about how zebra mussels changed the fisheries in Kawarthas and Quinte. Sun penetration and resultant temperature rise to greater depths made walleye locations change in past 15 yrs(more weed relation). Sight feeders like bass really thrived and i noticed bass were shallower. More largemouth in new areas etc... But these American shad body baits became my 'go to' baits over time; jointed shad raps,CC shads, swimmin or spittin image baits etc... go figure . Good to get us thinking about fishing
  20. Not to confuse further but that surely is a female house finch. Cowbirds have larger, darker beaks and are more orientated towards grass and telephone lines. They have larger, more blotchy breast streaks for a very short time before they are gone. The thinner breast streaks are permanant on house finches and they perch on home structures most often. A few times last week i mentioned being an amateur ornithologist to others, as i was searching for reported five-lined skinks in north King City. Didn't find any skinks but saw a pileated woodpecker and found chantrelles
  21. What a great idea expressed in the essay. Enjoying life and not taking the good moments for granted is a mature attitude . You must be a real good and proud father
  22. It is a juvenille female house finch. If you want another guess
  23. The white mark on the posterior part of gill plate is unique to both those smallmouth. However, The second fish is noticebly larger with slightly different shaped mark. Eight days really isn't enough time for such a change to occur. But whatever This reminds me of a post i did on all the different versions of this forum. Back in the mid 90's while jigging for fall walleyes(6 lb. mono) in 45 foot deep water, hooked into a musky and pulled it out. Was worried stinger hook would fuse jaw shut. Took this pic and put fish back with minimal resuscitation. A couple of years later, near same area, caught this fish in 12 ft. of water On a perch super shad rap. Years later while perusing musky pictures, noticed these fish had a similar pose, with flared fins. Most other didn't. Then noticed a white bar between tail fin and posterior caudal peduncle, with same little indentation mid-bar. It is the same fish years later. Looks healthier and chunkier despite yanking it of deep water on light gear years before. So catch and release does work!
  24. If i lived in Ottawa, at that time, i would look at musky fishing on the Ottawa/St.Lawrence. Quite a few guides in area, like Marc Thorpe. Also going down the Petawawa River from L. Travers To McManus L., in Algonquin Park, rocks in the fall.Good musky, bass, walleye, channel cat fishing Even an excursion to Bay of Quinte is not too far away.
