guess I've been lucky but I'd rather someone see me than rear end me at whatever stupid speed they're driving. but yeah, can see how the pretty flashing orange lights could be a beacon to some low iq drivers

and if one HAS to be on the road (for whatever reason), put yer stinking hazards on at least...

absolutely insane !!! re:warming. from what I understand, an effect of warming is swings and abnormal patterns. I mean how is it Alaska and the Yukon are warmer than us ? But I'm not a scientist so big pinch of salt -
Local Canadian Tire is sold out of ....

I predict a fire sale on generators this summer as people come to their senses and realize they were knee jerking by buying whatever was on the sales floor. Unless one is going to rewire their furnace, a genny is not going to do much to heat a house (something way more important that lighting) with space heaters. I will admit to replenishing my stock of candles by a factor of 3x however If I had a truck, I'd be cruising Toronto cherry picking the lumber piled on the road for the fireplace. -
You have to let Nick be the first to slime that boat dude ! It just one photo but that G3 looks nice.

^ this. basically there will always be people who don't give **** about others and hide behind the 'big corporate can eat the loss' mentality

Chicago Muskie Show + deep dish pizza.
woodenboater replied to Lunkerhunter's topic in General Discussion
God that's a ton of carbs in that there pizza. I'd be chasing down burritos or their all beef dogs. or thin crust, which is still Chicago as I understand it, just not as well promoted/rooted/mythologized, as deep dish. then I'd look for a jazz club to wind down -
Karma... it is a three way street correct?

Hope 2014 is the year she kicks C to the curb and for good ! She's a strong person, I'd even venture to stronger than many here (myself included). Thanks for the updates Wayne ! -

they could lose track of time, run out of gas, submarine the sled or freeze their opposables off, then you'd be safe -
^^ wow, that was great info !

I'm not an electrician but I would think the panels will NOT power your house in the event the grid goes down. I'm guessing it's a one way street from the solar panels to the utility. Whether or not a transfer switch could be installed to route to your box in the event the grid goes down, dunno, seems like it *could* be done. If I were in your shoes, I'd go propane and take the financial, short term hit. Lew, how long will your genny run on a full tank of propane, running normal household usage ? Cliff, your solar link is interesting to me and worth looking into as our cabin is off grid and I would like to tie into the system but SWMBO isn't keen on that. If the company will pay to bring a line in and set up the panels in that lease program, that could be a good way to get tied into the system without paying for the poles or underground trench but that's probably wishful thinking...
-
ok, a quick read of the 'lease' program shows it's FIT. You will not have any batteries as far as I can see so you'll still be tied into the grid and when that goes down... from their FAQ No batteries are incorporated. The system is connected directly to the grid. Think of it as a miniature renewable power plant feeding the grid. so maybe a closer look at propane powered generators is in the cards ? I think if one has the right property and is not tied into the system, solar and wind would be my choices, esp if one is on waterfront re:propane tanks. can't remember if it was on this site or another but one option that would need to be explored could be burying the LP tank. Not sure on bylaws or safety of such so due diligence would be required.
-
Have seen a few houses that have panels on the roof and if you found a program that covers the cost of the panels, you're lucky. I think there was a FIT program but wasn't aware of any in Ontario that covered the the entire cost, all in. If there is, I'd be all over it like flies on you know what PV panels aren't cheap and could run a homeowner over $30k plus the storage batteries and I think it's basically a given that you may not see any return, financially, for quite a number of years ((25+). In your case, having reliable power during blackouts is more important so that's worth more than a ROI. Curious, there shouldn't be much work involved with an LP powered back up generator unless I'm missing something. A huge pig should ease your worries about running out propane as well. But as you mention, cost is another matter of course .

If anyone wants to do serious winter camping AND have heat, the only way to do it imo, is with a canvas tent and wood stove, like the one in my avatar. Lots of room and the tent becomes t-shirt comfortable. Sure the tent and stove will weigh more than a nylon one and you're not going to hump it on your back, but taken care of, it will last for years and years. I expect the tent at Lakair to be used for many years to come

don't do anything to your laptop and take it CBL. they'll take a look and let you know what it might cost. they recovered pretty well all the files on my iMac. if the drive hasn't been zeroed, you could get your photos back. these dudes are good and your recovered (if they can) files come back on a portable external photos are worth the cost of recovery imo since they can't be replaced. hope it all works out ! -

that might be it but all the boats he had were all Mercury…if I go to the show and can find him, will ask again. -
Not boat related but if you plan to spend the whole day there, maybe think about bringing a cooler with food in it. The snack bar fare is very meh and $$. Might be other options in the DEC but not sure. Fishing boats are the east end of the hall. Have fun and happy shopping

Was at the Toronto International Boat Show during setup and was chatting with one of the main guys at I can't remember which marina. I mentioned the big arse Verados (lots of twins) on the boats and asked him about Yamahas. He said, and this surprised me, that the Yamahas were outselling Mercs by about 10:1. This sound right or way out in left field ? Think he mentioned the Yamaha technology was better as well. There were some seriously nice cruisers (Carvers, Meridiens, Marquis etc) in the big toys area and Legend had lots of boats as did Princecraft. Lund hadn't set up yet. -
Humble and Fred yes. They were probably living on borrowed time and the stupidity of Derek mocking the sex assault trial that he was foreman of was the perfect excuse to can these idiots. Imo, Derek should have been punished severely for that. *The Edge* lost it's edge years ago…Give me Q107 or CBC any day

wow, that stuff is heavy shovelling. supposed to turn to snow after midnight so hopefully it won't be too slippery for everyone's morning drive.
-
to the OP, is winter camping a once in a blue moon thing or something you want to get into more ?
-
If you're camping in the winter, then the tent may/should have a fly that hugs the ground to keep warmth in. The corollary would be that it will also keep any co from dispersing, even if it does leave the tent through the fabric. It'll just get trapped by the waterproof fly and thus possibly render the tent a cocoon. I wouldn't run any propane or gas fired burner while I was sleeping unless there were enough openings. I think Coleman or some company used to or may still, print optimal air requirements in their user manuals. ie-heater A needs a low opening (intake) of 10 sq" and a high (vent) of 10", to use random numbers. My memory may be off as well so ymmv

the NHL should have mandated larger ice when rinks were being rebuilt. But no, they would lose space for the club boxes…this is why NA will always have a difficult time in international tournaments overseas.

This is a Globe and Mail piece (from November) that talks about this exact issue facing hockey in Canada. Never played competitive hockey as there was no way my parents could afford it back then (70's), heck, I didn't even go to summer camp either (I know, boo hoo). http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/time-to-lead/the-great-offside-how-canadian-hockey-is-becoming-a-game-strictly-for-the-rich/article15349723/#dashboard/follows/ There are probably a bunch of Gretzkys or Crosbys out there but they're not in leagues so likely going un-noticed. I'm not too fussed about importing players. If we promoted skills vs toughness, we'd see more home growns imo.

Before you do anything else, take it to a data recovery specialist and see if they can retrieve your files. I used CBL Data Recovery when my iMac pooched it. They're on Alden Rd in Markham, wouldn't hurt to have them look at it. and not that you probably wanna hear this now but I keep my photos stored on a couple of externals as well. These will have to be copied again at some point. good luck Joey
