Read it before it got locked down sad really as I cant post in it. Its insanely hot right now the rivers are at thier lowest base flows since the early 90's. The fish are tired and beat up. Most of the fish so far are early run males because thats what comes in first, then some females. With no real rain to speak of you ll see trickles and small pushes that have the heck beaten out of them by every single guy floggin a marshmellow or a 10 foot lead in a 6 foot pool, in orther words they are harrassed and are not eating or even hitting out of agression. Do the nooks eat when they are in the dark prespawn stage >>>>>>NO !!!!!! Will they hit a streamer or such out of agression sometimes, will they eat a roe bag in those conditions nope and take that to the bank and we arent talking pier or estuary fishing here. Now do the nooks eat in the rivers yup in the early runs before thier body shuts down and they arent harrassed by every body and thier brother ohh ya they most certainly will, but in the rivers off Lake Ontario at this moment in time I will tell you that they arent. Generally what is done is someone is sitting either at the top of a pool or slightly down stream is drifitng and checking the float he/she floats down line drifts into the mouth and its a legitimate hook up....99.999999% of the time no it itsnt. If the hook is pointing outside of the mouth you more then likely just flossed a fishYES ITS A LEGAL FISH but lets talk some ethics here.... Now I know the pool fished at best its about the size of an above ground pool with pretty much no holding water for a kilometer up and down stream, hence why fish will sit in there....no where else to go. Nate and jangles are young kids put have paid dues walking rivers and such and I ll tell you they know what the heck is up with it all and I ll bet with the weather the way it is they arent down there and Nate lives a short bike ride away...Why because they know better....... For a guide to take a client into a small base flow river that is thermally stressed into a pool that is the only place a fish can sit in that system for kilometers up or downstream is actually a shame and not a good example of what a guided fishing trip is about sorry its not a slam but a plain straight out cold truth and Im sure that any responsible tackle manufacturer/supplier or angler would agree. Simply put any guide that is putting a paying client onto an experience such as this is exlempfying a poor choice in conservation . Its much better to potentially walk way up the system find water where some resident fish arent thermally stressed to the point of dying and let them catch fish that albeit much smaller but are legitimate, fair hooked fish that havent been harrassed in a small pool on a river that has little more then i ll bet 60 cubic feet of water flowing through it. I have seen this happen in a lot of places where guides put clients on fish that the approach or method is questionable and personally a guide should be way above that I agree bring on the steel!!! SOrry bout the rant

Is anybody planning on making money from the at-par loonie?
aniceguy replied to Dutch's topic in General Discussion
hedge the dollar against an interst drop by bank of canada next month. If your doing that though you need big big coin to make any real money on the spread -
Figure I ll put this in before it gets locked up.. But funny how the unions are all striking the auto sector is in big trouble but Sid Ryan chooses this time to run for office....no offence but the man should focus on what is important the ppl that pay his wage..he knew all this was coming down the pipes but choose to turn his back on those that need him the hard working factory guys shows ya what kind of charector he really is...Hope he isnt elected and in fact gets run out of the unions to boot

nematodes for breakfeast Mike...thats a lot of fibre and protien...remember what happens to me once some extra fibre enters the system lol Great read I ll get teh stuff in the am and apply it.
-
Mike stopped by and looked at my nasty grass he suggested nematodes.....but we didnt get into a real discussion about them. Any experience are they ok for the dog etc.. thanks for the help

a small good news update perhaps Kareem called me this morning and was talkative, and in fine spirits, so much so we talked about a trip to quinte soon....They adjusted his medicine and moved him to demerol instead of the perc's and it seemed to make the world of difference in terms of his mental clarity
-
thanks guys I guess I shoulda saved this and added it to Solo's pic post
-
I just downloaded some pics of my camera.... Kareem and Mike
-
Sorry to have had to break the news, when I spoke with him MIke he said he had a letter for us both
-
Well we arrived at kareem's house at 4 am Thursday only to find him sitting in front of his house in pyjama's. The first words to come out between tears were " Im not going" Having not met the man before I leaned on Mike for advise in how we go forward. Kareem invited us both in the house and within a few minutes I realized just how special this guy is. After some coaxing we get Kareem into the car, it was a 9 hour drive filled with laughs jokes and some great stories, even though we could both see he was not himself at all and was in considerable pain, but it was a drive I ll remember for a long long time. We arrive load the boat and drive over to the cottage, Kareem seemed in good spirits albeit his mobility was just not there. After we unpacked after considerable thought we decided Kareem needed some walleye fillets to go with the massive Porterhouse. Mike and I proceed to fish for an hour or so releaseing a nice pike but bringing 2 nice walleye to the dock for eventual dinner. We had a GREAT !! dinner had some great conversation and pretty much it became evident that Kareem was without a doubt one of the most articulate caring compassionate persons I have ever met. We both saw his health take a down turn this evening, the medication and extreme pain made him a shell of the man he was and it was obvious that his end stage cancer was wrecking havoc on him in evey way imagianable. Even through it we joked and swore and had enough confindence Kareem included that we would go into a back lake today for some monster bass and Pike. We laughed until we fell asleep We woke this morning only to see Kareem in extreme agony from Intra muscular and joint pain from the medical coctail he was on, sputum with blood and the over all severity of his down turn had us contemplating a trip to Kirkland lake for emergency medical evac or home but either way Kareem needed to be very close to medical attention should he require it in the next 72 hrs. We packed the boat and helped Kareem come down the stairs get in the boat and start our way. Kareem the type of man he is insisted we fished, both Mike and I had no desire only because we knew we needed to get him to a safer environment, but as I learned this weekend in typical Kareem fashion he insisted, so we geared up rods and made sure Kareem was extremely comfortable. Yes we did hit fish and it was enjoyable but what will stay in my mind as the memory of the trip and certainly Kareem was the casual glance and the sublime smile he gave me as he proceeded to set the hook and fight what was most certainly a 10lb pike. Shortly afterwards we knew we had a long drive and needed to get Kareem home, so we packed the car and drove. I must say in between his naps he had smiles and Mike shared stories of Kareem and his fishing prowess. Like I said earlier I have met thousands of ppl over the years who enjoy the outdoors but Kareem will stay in my mind for a long long time as one of the nicest humans God put on this earth. Some of you fish for a living, some out of addiciton or escape and some just becuase its in our blood, today I saw a man who might not see October give a big smile when he had a fish on regardless of the immense pain he was in why....Because he loved to fish. I honoured to have met Kareem, learn abit about myself and to embrace our own mortality and scream loud and proud for the rest of my days FISH ON !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Mike for the experience and god bless Kareem
-
Well Mike and I just got off the phone before I had time to read this thread he explained it all to me. The weekend was to be a bush wacking and to a certain extent Im sure some extreme portaging to get into some big canadian shield smallie lakes and big pike lakes. With Kareem not being able to do that it took me about 2 seconds to decide with mike that this potentially could be a last remote trip so Mike and I will be sure its one he remembers........Wait till Kareem eats the milo shore lunch... that outa get him feeling much better. A choice between extreme fishing in the remote quebec wilderness, or a laid back weekend fishing the cottage lake with some one we know might not be there next summer.................... Im all over the laid back part...

John Tory Pledges 35 Million to anglers and Wildlife

When the conservatives asked both John and I to write up a brief on what can be fixed within the OMNR we did, a full brief on all aspects. I have met john many times and have conversed with him over conservation issues many more times. Much of the tory platform came from our briefings to him and were reflected by other groups. John is the real deal there is no doubt on that.... If you want conservation issues and more importantly the OMNR to regain its capacity to render services its intended for then vote for your local conservative canidate if not vote for good ole mc Squinty -
had both also, and put a PD with US auto and co pilot. Other then the misery to deploy it I prefer it to cable steer ten fold. ya the auto pilot is tough on lower setting with some chop but kick it up and it works just fine....co pilot is a god send as I used to get wicked back aches from the foot control
-
nope not you at all. its the way those first generation PD's ver designed.
-
its illegal to allow a fish suitable for consumption to spoil......some would argue that these fish are not suitable for consumption ( I agree) but not in the OMNR's eyes.....a CO could lay a charge on it
-
95% of the rainbows caught in the east are of natural origins.. Nope we dont clip any fish we catch and only collect eggs from fish that are not clipped.. In fat we just finished a genetic comparision of unclipped rainbow trout on the Credit and compared them to clipped fish..some interesting data for sure
-
great question Let me dispell a few myths. Rainbows are a self sustaining fish population with upwards of 60% coming from natural reproduction. There are a myriad of watersheds on the North shore of Lake O that have some of the best juvinile habitat and reproductive water on the planet..........The problem is that exploitation is not allowing this fish population to be self sustaing marry that to migratory blocks ( dams etc) and some special interest groups some of this fantastic water is not accessable. Harvest rates are in the 35% range and 15% is what is really required. Bring those limits down to a 1 fish with a slot and Lake Ontario has the potential to become a world class rainbow fishery On the US side for the most part all rivers are put delay and take fisheries except a few on the far eastern perimiter. Chinooks dont spend much time in the system and if we have a decent winter survival rates in regards to natural reproduction are impressive to say the least. Alot of dicsussion over the years and many of us think that 30% plus of the nooks out there are natural fish. 90% of the rainbows you boat off the riggers die right away or shortly thereafter from delayed mortality. The nooks have a slightly better chance of survival with decent water temps and proper release methods. Sorry to add to the grief HH and if you like I can gladly forward some papers on delayed mortailty and such as mentioned above

jos is a pretty good guy and always can find a deal in there.........

got a new powerdrive over winter, with us ap and the co pilot nice unit and all except after today.. Ended up on short notice running out for some bass. The unit will run in all speeds but the motor that controls its movement is pooched along side with the auto pilot. I ll bring it back for warranty next week but Im wondering if anyone experienced the same and there was a quick resolve other then to pull it off the boat so I can fish Monday
-
funny this came up......smoked and grilled some ribs for dinner and the wife and I talked about goin tomm
-
because the OMNR doesnt have the capacity to enforce a closure due to stressed thermal regime
-
sad part is that by mentioning certain creeks lurkers now have an additional area to google earth and pull trout out for dinner.......sorry for the rant just came outa no where
-
read a book a few back on the history of kikenhaufer, interesting stuff
-
you can if you want but a quick salt with kosher salt prior to the hot smoke does the job
