Hi All, Just wondering what rigs, baits and methods people use when targeting whitefish? I have only ever fished for them during the winter on the ice using the usual jigs + spoons tipped with minnows or mini tubes. Just wondering how to fish for them in the spring/summer/fall as there is no closed season for them here and they are awesome fun to catch...and totally yummy grilled in a lemon parsley and cracked black pepper butter. Also wondering whereabouts the move in the warmer waters, i.e are they deep, suspended, surface or everywhere in the water column, is there a general rule to follow for open water seasons? Thanks in advance. Simon

I was using 8lb micro ice braid with uni knot attached 8lb flouro leader. Used at least 10 feet of leader as thew whities on this particular lake spook easy. ust say the braid was great for bite detection and hook setting.

Happy birthday, great pics and report. the colours on those trout are amazing. I tried to catch them once in a stocked lake , still to catch one....did not stay long though cuz the ice was melting and really freaking me out when it was cracking and moving....lol.

Great report! nice fish too. My wife laughed cuz i said out loud"what the hell is that" when i saw the Buffalo thingamajig.

That is great, looks like it was bought that way, really tidy job, I should show my buddy Matt this, he has mushrooms growing on his wooden false floor. every year he says he will fix it (known him 2 yrs), he would have an excuse if he liked mushrooms, but he doesn't!

Hi Everyone, After seeing a couple of pics of tiny fish on CCMT's post requesting pics for a 'special project' (intriguing) i could not help remembering some of the little guys i caught, Stoty's tiny bass is very cool and just thought you guys must all have some not so Trophy pics...would be fun to see them. Here's a couple i have. One is a tiny Pike that really hammered a mepps spinner and one of my wife with a GIANT Walleye.

One of the things i love most about living on the lake apart from fishing is the Loons.......took this at sunset the other day

Great pics Nauti, warms me just looking at them, been so cold up here so long almost forgot what spring is like!!!

Lakers like cold water, hence why they are...mostly....found in deeper water in the summer months. Spring fishing is awesome up here in Northwestern Ontario because its not long since the ice went out and they can be found in the shallows too. During the summer i would say what the others are saying is right...45 - 55 degrees is about right. Dont know how deep your pool thermometer will go but temps at the surface wil be different from temps at mid range and deeper waters so dont know how useful that will be. I can pick up the thermoclineson my fishfinder and fish either above or below depending on where the fish are showing.

portable fish finder when between boats

LOLOLOLOL......i did not store my stuff well either, the batteries in the garage from last november, we had weeks of -40 celcius this winter, so may need new batteries, i got the nautilus battery charger from crappie tire last year, very good and does the job, but keep the reciept cuz the first one stopped working and got a replacement. I also am fitting a new fish finder, my bearings will need to be sorted on the trailer as soon as the boat is in the water, but that wont happen till the motor comes back from the garage ...the B#$%%@%s have had it for 3 weeks now. Seems like we are in similar position here Sconceptor!!! -
I'm with Garry2r, I love Shimano...lots of different size reels for the same models to suit your needs and easy to get extra spools. Stradic is a good reel, but coming from Europe i like the rear drag with fighting drag features that they have over there....take a look here under rear drag reels. I have my heart set on the GTM RB 2500, pricey will be around $C200 with postage but an awesome reel!

Thanks for the post Fisherman, very interesting. our woods here are packed with mushrooms and fungus of all sorts, your link has shown me that quite a few are edible, i will be careful, sooooo if ya see no more posts from me you'll know what happened

Hey Stoty, I would go with what a lot of the others are saying, powerpro with a flouro leader. Only problem i have ever had with flouro is knot strength,. To combat this i use a Palomar Knot or Trilene Knot. Definitely go with the swivel in my humble opinion, the only time i dont use a swivel is for ice fishing cuz my fishfinder shows it and makes for a messy screen so i will join line to line.

Hey Sconceptor, Have a look at this, the 565 is recommended. Visit My Website. I think it depends how much ya wanna spend. I like the dual beam capability of the Hummingbird. -
