I rotated the antenna and moved it from pointing West to point South-West, which pulled in 3 more channels, so yes it does seem to matter where it is pointing. The digtial converter box was about $50 at Wall**** today, but I think it was on sale last week for $25. The guy said it was a crap unit if we want T.V. over the next few days ... I didn't and don't have time to shop around for the next couple of weeks. Entropy

I have a house on Lake Scugog, near Port Perry. I have an old antenna on a tower with a boster and a rotor. We have lost all but 1 channel as of this eve. So, I went to Wall**** and bought a digital converter. I now get the following: Ch 3-1 CKVR 5-1 CBLT-DT 7-1 CIII-HD 9-1 CFTO 19-1 TVO 35-1 CFTO-54 41-1 CIII-HD 67-1 CHCHDT3 My antenna is pointing to the south west, towards Toronto. Is anyone doing any better? What else can I do to get free live tv. Any help would be appriciated. Entropy

NF - any garage builders in the house?
Entropy replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Here is a not so good pic, I have better on another card. The $5500 for the pad was installed, smooth surface for ease of clean up. All the rest I did myself, it was the biggest I was allowed to build on my lot. Oh, I also bought and paid for a garage door company for the door and instal, opener included. All material were locally bought at family owned bus', and windows and man door are from Canada Windows and Doors. Bought a decent wood stove and 17 ft of chimney, just need to put if up and get it cert. Building inspector in my area was great, told me to connect it to the house some how, and I could build it as big as I want. I think you could put the shell up for about $14000, floor included. It's all the extra that kills you, like wanting a roof that would not leak in 20 years, but sill wanting shingles, electrical fixtures, and wire, nice energy start windows (better than what is in my house). Good luck. -
NF - any garage builders in the house?

Last year I put up an 18 x 24 ft with loft, and am at about $18000 now, and just need to put a chimney in and insulate. Included in that are slab, top quality 9x7 garage door, man door, 3 4x4 windows, siding, 30 year fiberglass shingles and 100% ice and water sheild, sofit and facia, as well as a set of good stairs that go up to the loft, oh and all wired up too. The slab cost was $5500 with 12" around the outside, 6" throughout the rest, and lots of mesh and rebar, wanted to over do it a bit just to be sure. My brother inlaw put up a hut like the one you are looking at, and it was a big pain in the but, leaks, is cold, and is like being in a big culvert. I would build with wood again anyday, in a traditional sense. Entropy -
Am I Going to be OK?; Are you Going to be OK?
Entropy replied to Entropy's topic in General Discussion
Well, I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one. Every bulb in my house is a 9w or 13w CFL (has been for 4 years), I turn off my hot water during peak times (10c /Kwh), just got sold my truck that used 18L / 100km for a van [the wife/family vehicle] that uses 11.5 L / 100km, have a small garden in summer, thinking of egg producing chickens (can't see that being worth it, but might be fun?), going to get more insulation in attic this April, when my compact fuel eff. SUV [my daily comuter] dies in the next year and a half (almost at 400 000kms) I will buy a little 4.7L /100km 5 door car. At some point I can't do anything more, and will continue to fall behind compared to where I was 2 years ago. I will see that I and my family are ok, that I promise. But what is really worries me is wheather my children (very young right now) will have a similar lifestyle to me, or even a reasonable one at that. Education, Housing, Transportation, Energy, Insurance, etc. 20 years from now ?? I hope they stand a chance. ? Entropy ? -
So, I watch the news today and now have a sad outlook on the years to come. 1. Electricty rates are to go up by about 7% effective sometime in march 2. Gasoline is predicted to go up by 10m to 15 cents a litre in the near future. That would put us at $1.25/L to $1.30/L. 3. Grocery costs are to have gone up by about 10% by the end of spring. Am I going to be ok, are you going to be ok? How will this affect your habits / routines.

I always turn mine on when I first drop it in the water. If there is any there I know it is from rain -- sitting in my drive. At the end of the outing I turn it on to see if there is any. Also, when it is sitting in the water for a week. I turn it on and check at the begining and end of each day. It's better to catch something, rather than reacting to a full blown problem. Entropy

When and where do you think it dropped off? Entropy

I need to replace some drywall right beside my new bathtub / shower insert. What kind of drywall do I buy when I go to Home De pot? Is it called green-board or blue-board, I’d like to buy which ever is more / most suitable to getting wet. Thanks Entropy

So I’m fishing for Walleye last evening A N D ...

The walleye ( 13 1/2 inch) was flat dead. -
So I’m fishing for Walleye last evening A N D ... I get one on. This thing was BIG -to the point that I had to start moving the boat to prevent a major loss of line. I was fighting it for awhile, but wasn’t even getting a sight of it. It wasn’t fighting like a typical walleye - not shaking much, fighting more like a log than anything. I then clued into the idea that it could be a Muskie. I’m hoping that it is the biggest walleye of my life, but then I get it to the boat and see that it is a VERY LARGE MUSKIE !!!! And I keep the pressure on the rod. All of a sudden a Walleye comes flinging out of the water in front of me, and I realize that it is attached to my lure. The Muskie was eating the Walleye that I had caught! I was real impressed, I fought this Muskie / Walleye duo for 5 to 6 min. Before the Muskie let go of the ‘eye. That was exciting! Entropy Has something like this happened to you?

I choose not to take it, but YES they do pressure you to sign for it. When I was signing my mortgage, the woman at the bank was getting mad at me for saying NO after each time she went through a different 'talk'. If I die my life insurance through my employer, will end up covering the cost of my house, my wife will be ok. In the mean time we have an extra $50 a month to invest in the house or an investment. If you don't need it get rid of it. I figure there is a point at which the costs and benefits of life insurance meet. For me that is looked after through my employer and my wife's employer. We are not worth millions dead, but should be ok if something were to go wrong in our grand scheme of life. Entropy

I have never bought a t.v. let alone 2 high definition ones (only accepted "donated" old ones), and sure don't own a Hummer, the people that spend like that will likely be ok. Me on the other hand ??? Entropy

I have visited this site a few times in the past year while thinking about the future. www.backwoodshome.com Entropy

What else could we add to that list? Entropy

Yep, 1) Plant as big a garden as you can, 2) Brace yourself for Smart Metering of Electricity, 3) Get rid of or park the pickup truck and drive a tiny car, 4) Heat your house with local wood (tow a small box trailer behind the car), 5) Fish and Hunt, 6) Down size your boat, 7) Start thinking more European!!
