Pretty hard to chip step your way to a spot swinging an axe.. One easy chip with a good spud pole and you penetrate easily an inch if not 2 of ice.. That's what spud poles where invented for. An axe is no where near as ergonomically designed.
-
Great video Guys! Personally though.. I think your taking a very big risk not chipping your way out with a spud pole on 3" of ice.. IMO. Not to say I wouldnt fish 3".. I do it all the time. But I chip every step I take. Every step.

I always have my spud bar around my wrist. It's not going to make my sink to the bottom faster... I wear a floater suite, almost 100% of the time. My spud is custom designed. 1" x 3" 4140PH plate welded to 1" DOM tube, with a T-handle. Knurled for grip. After some trial and error with the exact angle to sharpen the tip, I heat treated the tip as hard as I could get it. I only have to sharpen it once every few years now. Works like a charm! http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=59871&hl=%2Bbud+%2Bthe+%2Bspud The link was before I added a rope through the handle, with a loop to fit over my wrist. Nothing tight. Just there in case it slips out of my hand while chipping a hole.

Are you planning to start ice fishing regularly? Because there is tons of gear that you could buy. But if it's only for one trip, or a trip here and there.. A lot of things you can get by with out. The reality is, if your friends have all the gear already. All you really need is a rod and reel. Maybe 2 set ups. Tip-ups are my least favorite method. I have them, but never use them. Having an ice transducer helps. But again, for the cost, you can get by with a summer one. I did for years. The ice ducer makes it much easier to set up and mark your lure in deep water. but in shallow (30' and less) you shouldn't have an issue with your suction cup type. I assume you have a portable unit, with a suction cup mount. Some common gear: Ice picks Ice cleats (slip on over your boots) Warm weather gear Ice rods and reels Jigging spoons/jigging raps/ Buckshot spoons/ Williams hammered half and half... Lots of little jig heads.... Spring bobbers (for your rod tips Rod holders A container to keep live minnows in, so you can move around, and keep a small amount of minnows with you. I just use a old tuperware container Auger (hopefully your friends have one) My preference for line is 10lb ice braid, with 8lb fluorocarbon leader You know what... Just meet me a cabalas and give me your credit card....

My girlfriends mom lost her job at goodwill yesterday... The union didn't fight for GW employees to make good money. The employees there made minimum wage. For a ceo to only make 230,000 a year.. Most Ceo's of chains that large make what...$10,000,000 a year?? Goodwill was used by so many people, who really needed it. its sad that they shut down. Many people are going to be very hard up now. I was very saddened to hear the news. I went there a few times a month. I don't know about the aforementioned scams. Or what ever is going on in the background. And to be honest I don't care. I just feel for the employees that lost their jobs, and the customers who are going to have an even harder time now that the GW doors have been locked.

what the hell was he thinking. Really, I mean, come on. I know it happens every year, and it always will. But this year is super sketchy, why would you bother runing a quad this early?

Plastic Repair Done I Hope FISH Hut Tub Clam Guide Pictures Up
NAW replied to Fish Farmer's topic in General Discussion
I can think of a few ways. If you can find a similar plastic material, you could epoxy it on. Maybe add a couple rivets for good measure. Make sure you drill the ends of the cracks so they don't get any bigger.. I'm not 100% sure if it's thermoplastic or thermoset material. If it's thermoset, melting it with a soldering iron won't work. If it's thermoplastics you should be able to melt it back together, maybe with the addition of some filler material. But I would use a propane torch, not a soldering iron. You'll know right away if it's thermoplastic, because the plastic will melt when you heat it and turn liquid. YouTube it. I'm sure your find something -
Go get her Bliz!! Hopefully you get skunked on your hut's maiden voyage!!

I am heading out both mornings. Back bay crappies with some fellow OFC'er on Saturday. Sunday.. I'm not to sure. I may go for a poke at my pickerel hole. Or maybe try a local lake for some pike.

I made it a few years ago. Works like a charm. The chipper part is hardened tool steel. Stays sharp for a long time!
