  1. Better general deterence results from the internet message boards and media on this than a press release 2 years from now from the MNR(F) providng in the first place he got caught, charged and convicted.
  2. Always in the kayak and canoe. I have a stable 14.5 ft boat and mostly fish a good sized cottage lake. I wear the PFD in the boat when the water is cold or is rough. On big water with a 2 mile swim to shore I wear it always. When its really cold I put the floater jacket or full suit on.
  3. I fish a cottage country shield lake for lakers. I choose cheqper lures because the lake bottom is snaggy. 3-5 inch spoons in gold. silver or combo work especially the hammered finishes. Spoons that are lighter so they drop slower and flutter on stops and turns. I use some of the old school Lucky Strike spoons like the "Warden's Worry" -i liked the name. Also minnow baits like bombers in natural colours work. The darker and gray colours produce best, maybe looks like a baby laker that the bigger fish eat. Agree that the fish are either on or off. I typically get a hit in the first 15 minutes trolling or struggle for 2-3 hours. I'd add that the locals run either steel or copper with a gang troll, large spoon with no hook and a minnow threaded onto a dropper look.
  4. North end of Haliburton last 2 weeks surface temp ranged from 21C down to 17C. Did better (not great) on the lake trout fishing relatively more shallow. Caught fish in 30-40 feet on top of mid-lake shoals instead of the ususal off the shoal edge in deeper water. Did catch one baby trout about 80 feet down on copper.
  5. One of my favourites but not exactly an outdoor/adventure book is Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, Two young bush Cree enlist in WW1 and end up as snipers in the trenches in France. There's some moose hunting, aboriginal shamanism and pretty accurate accounts of trench warfare. Based loosely on Francis Pegahmagabow who was credited with 378 kills.
  6. The lake I fish changes depth often and quickly. 80 to 20 feet in a 100 yards. Downriggers will work but only in the areas with consistent depths. Otherwise I would spend my time raising and lowering the ball. I catch most of my fish off the deeper side of shoals. Until the fish move deeper and then target suspended fish in deep water I'm reeling in and letting out the lead core as the depth changes.
  7. I prefer the lead core and the "relatively" lighter action set-up. The lead core however maxes out at 45-50 feet down and in some hot summers the majority of the fish are deeper and stuck on bottom. I've used the wire and pool cue set up before. A guy on my lake hand lines the copper (wearing gloves) and says he catches fish. Still interested in any better versions of copper line.
  8. I normally use lead core line to fish lake trout but thinking about trying copper line. I've tried the single strand wire before and overall didn't like it. Is there a good quality cooper line out there and who sells it? Is it better with more than single strand? I've seen the "Old Timer" copper line for sale but that's the same brand of wire that I didn't like.
  9. I fished lake trout out of my boat for the first time this past weekend. North end of Haliburton. Skunked Sat morning, caught 3 and kept 1 21 inches Sun morning, all 3 in 20 minutes off the same spot. Surface temp was 14-16 C. Maybe 30 feet down on the leadcore on a bomber minnow bait. Found out have to take the shaft cowling off to change the spark plugs on my 2013 Honda 15 HP outboard. So much for changing a sparkplug with the boat in the water.
  10. I get the brown husks off, give them a good soak/spray, toss them in boiling water for 2 minutes, strain & toss them in an ice bath to cool down fast, shake the water off-towel dry, bag them, suck the air out of the bag abd throw in freezer -aka blanche them. I found a few morel mushrooms growing in my back yard this week. Ate 3 but the squirrels are getting them as they're coming up.
  11. I find wild leeks in hardwood forests like a sugar maple bush in rich soil where its not too thick and they get good sunlight. One of the first green plants to come up in the spring.
  12. I use the Cortland Kerplunk lead core exclusively as i tried the older Suffix leadcore and it broke very easily. I use a Willis knot to tie on a fluoro leader. i'm interested in using the Suffix 832 as it is supposed to be thiner and sink faster. Where did you buy it?
  13. Yesterday morning I picked my first fiddleheads this year. Ate them last night steamed for 10 minutes then add butter & lemon juice. Wild leeks have been up for about 2 weeks. Out turkey hunting, still no turkey but had a mature doe walk right up to me within 15M before she made me and ran off.
  14. Troll and cover a lot of water. Try both shallow and deep water and fish the top 20 feet unless you mark most fish deep. Try the north side of the lake where the shallows should warm up first. Inflows are also worth checking out. Spoons or 3-4 inch natural minnow baits on long leads. Stop the boat and change direction to let the spoons flutter and the minnow baits stop. Medium action rods with 6-8 lb line. .
  15. The date on last year's regs was April 12. I'm interested in the additional archery tags for WMU 78. Last year there were none.
  16. I've called in a number of coyotes while turkey hunting and shot them if they kept coming after they made me. More often they changed direction and stayed out of shotgun range once they saw me. I saw less deer this winter than other years. In one field that in the past I regularly saw 5 deer and as many as 15 I saw a couple all winter. I'm not sure they moved elsewhere or the numbers are way down. I think the long cold winter and ice on the ground caused as much grief for them as predators. Deep snow made it hard to outrun the predators and quicker to tire out. I did'nt spend much time in the bush this winter to check it out as the ice fishing season was so good.
  17. I ordered some for pickup in May from a business called Mycosource. Website is mycosource.com.
  18. I fish the east side of the lake and fished perch yesterday on est. 28-30 inches of ice. The shallow water Virginia -Sibald Pt-Jacksons Pt holds spring perch.. .
  19. The mexican place or goulash place on Main St in Newmarket. Also for BBQ Big Bone on Eagle St. I know you don't want asian food but I also like Pho Saigon or Cambodian Noodle in Newmarket.
  20. Wish I was hiding out in Haliburton right now. Sitting beside the air tight stove, looking out onto the lake, having a tasty drink. After fishing of course. Was up last weekend. At least 30 inches of ice. This is the first year in maybe 5 that I've used the old Jiffy. Only one smallish lake trout caught & released.
  21. I have a 16 foot kevlar canoe -great for canoe tripping and portaging but too tippy and catches too much wind for any real fishing. Also have sit in kayaks that I prefer over the canoe for general use but don't like too much for fishing.-sit too low in the water and too cramped. Also not great for portaging. I am looking at a sit on dedicated fishing kayak. Don't know if I want to pay $3K for a Hoble although could be great for trolling pedal powered.
  22. My cottage is west of the bottom tip of Algonquin Pk with mostly undeveloped bush between the two. In the no trap-no hunt area. I see wolf tracks every winter, especially when moose are around. Heard wolves only a few times. I've only seen one wolf -I'd say a young timber wolf. It was black and the size of a large german shepherd dog. I see coyotes where I live in north Durham and that wolf was 2X the size. Some of the coyotes I see are the typical pointed nose grey-brown shaggy dogs, Others I've seen look simllar to a domestic dog-larger, brown, shorter hair and not wolf-like.
  23. I also recommend the St. Ambrosie oatmeal stout-my favourite. There are many tasty "craft:" beers out there. Any many tasty beers out of Quebec. Guiness is boring in comparison but I'll drink it. For the hot summers I switch to the hoppy IPA style beers.
  24. I have no problem getting checked. What I notice is the push to issue tickets. The last CO I dealt with "seemed" dissapointed not charging me. First I approached him as he was already n the parking lot and had to go by him anyway. He didn't stop at checking license and asking questions and had me open up everything and did a bit of a search. Several years ago another CO told he he was disappointed in not charging anyone when he checked a group of 6-8 I was in perch fishing on Couch. Now anytime I deal with a CO or police I go in that they are looking to charge me, not looking to help me in any way.
