  2. There is another board that many guys who fish Lake Ontario post on. There are always combos that are listed, many top end but reasonably priced. I think during the off season there will be a lot of Charter Captains that will be looking to get rid of their current set ups to make room for next year's new products.
  3. Last year there were several fish caught over 39 lbs. The size is down this year for multiple reasons, but I think it will pick up in a couple of years due to the success of local Pen Projects and gene pool. On a side note, guys have been catching a lot of shakers this year (salmon under 5 lbs), which in theory will result in a higher number of mature salmon in 2-3 years. Can't wait for the biggins to return.
  4. I agree with K_F go with the ABU 6500 or the 5500 series. If you are a right handed than go with the 6501 or the 5501. The 5501 is a smaller reel, I use it for casting Bucktails and as an alternative to using a bait cast. Both models are easy to maintain too. When I worked at LeB.a.r.o.n in the mid 90s, I saved up and got a two speed 6500 that landed me a few nice skis but in hindsight, I should have saved some bucks and stuck with the regular 6500. The one thing I would recommend no matter what reel you get, is make sure you get a handle with flat paddles instead of rounded. I find you that you get a better hookset using them as you get more leverage when baring down on the handle. IMO the Abu level winds are simple but reliable reels.
  5. The looser has to sharpen all the hooks in the winner's tackle box.
  6. Thats a shame, I go up there a few times every year, usually openner. I got many fish off of Avery Point. Is it on the same side of the shole or on the Herring Island side?
  7. I would suggest popping into Mohawk Marina, they should be able to give you some information on whats going on.
  8. talk to Wayne Andrews (Andrews Charters) out of Port Credit. Wayne has been chartering for over 30 years and is a great guy. He does a lot for the fishery in the great lakes, and started Port Credit Salmon and Trout Association. www.andrewscharter.ca
  9. I am renting a cottage on Crane Lake near Parry Sound at the end of the month for 5 days with my GF and my Brother. Its owned by a friend of my GF. The cottage comes with a 14ft Tinner with an older Outboard. The cottage is near Crane Lake Resort. Seen a few pictures and the bay the cottage is in looks promising for SM bass. Talking to the owner, there is also good fishing off the dock for Smallies (good for the kids). Has anyone fished that end of the lake and what can be caught in the area? Keeping in mind I don't think we would be able to venture to far from the cottage due to the boat. As well are there any slot limits that we need to keep in mind. Thanks James
  10. I work for one of the big banks, and used to work in the Mortgage department. If the mortgage goes to collections, the banks do not have recourse to pursue you if you live in the states. So you are safe, he is outta luck. With out knowing your bother's credit history, it might help if he downsizes the place he is looking to buy, or possibly get a place that he can rent out the basement. That would help strengthen his mortgage application. If he is single, tell him to buy a two bedroom condo, and rent one bedroom out. It should be easier for him to get a mortgage on a condo cause there is usually less risk as far as the stucture, ie no concerns about expensive repairs for a roof repair, leaking basement, etc. As well the heating, insurance, and property taxes are usually less.
  11. I have been tying buck tails for a few years in several patterns. My brother do well on them on Pike, bass and walleye.. as well as perch and crappie... Im located in mississauga.
  12. I believe bass is closed till the end of June. There are walleye, perch, panfish and pike in the lake though.
  13. I have fished electric riggers and manual. Fishing the Great Lakes, you got to go with electrics. When fishing anywhere from 30ft down to 110ft electrics are a blessing. I would avoid the pancake style weights, and don't go with anything less than 10#, if you can go with 12, this will avoid blowback. Some guys go with even 20# weights but that is overkill, and if your riggers are not meant for something that heavy, you'll burnout your downrigger motor, and they are not cheap to maintain. Other things to consider is boom length, swivel bases, and speed of the rigger. Welcome ot the addiction, feel free to pm if you need more info.
  14. I use a Diawa mooching reel for downrigging on Lake Ontario. The drag on Mooching reels is usually 1:1, so there is not an advantage over anything technque. Its strickly all about the enjoyment of the fight. Having a screamer on a Mooching is unbeatable IMO. Mooching is popular out in BC and is used here to a lesser extent. Instead of using acutal Mooching reels some guys use large arbour fly reels. The price range for mooching can range from $30 up over $500, like everything you get what you pay for. If you are just starting out, go with a entry level mooching reel, and if you start getting into downrigging or going on the Great Lakes with any type of frequency than you might want to upgrade your equipment. I haven't heard guys using them on Lakers though. James Hookerdown
  15. A Newfie was stopped by a game warden recently with two ice chests Full of fish. He was leavin' a cove well-known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, 'Do you have a license to catch those fish?' 'Naw, sir', replied the Newfie. 'I ain't got none of dem dere Licenses. I don't need one. You must understand, by, dese here is My pet fish.' 'Pet fish?' 'Yeah. Dat's de trut' bye. Every night, I take dese fish down to de Cove and let 'em swim 'round for awhile. Den, when I whistles, dey jump right back into dese here ice chests and I takes 'em home.' 'That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can't do that.' The Newfie looked at the warden for a moment and then said, 'It's de Trut Mr. Government Man. I'll show ya. It really works.' 'O.K.', said the warden. 'I've got to see this!' The Newfie stood on a rock and poured the fish into the cove. Then he stood and looked out to sea. After several minutes, the warden says, 'Well?' 'Well, what?', says the Newf. The warden says, 'When are you going to call them back?' 'Call who back?' 'The FISH', replied the warden! 'What fish?', replied the Newfie. Moral of the story: Newfies may not be as smart as some city slickers on De mainland but by the lard tundering jaysus we ain't as dumb as some Government employees.
  16. I love it... been fishing lake ontario for a few years now.... before i was strickly pike, bass and walleye... tied into my first salmon in 99 and been addicted ever since. My biggest to date is over 27 lbs, and happly searching for my first tyee. On a side note... my dad who is now 70, got into salmon fishing about 5 years ago, but prior to that just fished for the odd time... now he is the one asking my brother and me, when are we heading out next. Needless to say he caught the bug and we all love it. As you might of heard, a new club is starting in Port Credit, can't wait.
  17. At Grimsby Tackle I got - 2 10 foot Abu Garcia Dipsey Rods for $20 each (no tax), and - 9 Atommick trolling flys for $20.
  18. Yea it is $5 after 5. Expect to wait in line though. I went last night, lined up at about 4.50, they didn't move the line till 5. The number of exhibits were less than in the past, and you have a lot more walking to do. I liked how the show is split, but it was too much walking after a full days work... I felt like a kid whinning after the first two hours. lol. Don't expect too many deals though. We did manage to pick up a couple of dipsey rods for $20 at Grimbsy tackle...SCORES!!!! I noticed there were more information style booths than before. I'll be there again on Friday, but working the Port Credit Salmon and trout club's booth. $20 annual fee, with some great draw prizes for members. Its a brand new club, that is working on increase the salmon and Trout fishery in the western basin of Lake O. Walter O. was kind enough to donate the booth to the club.
  19. Since the guy is interfering, well actually harrassing your buddy while in the act of hunting, I would charge him with harrassment. I agree that the P3TA activist is boardering on stalking as well. Either way, if your buddy decides to charge or just make it known what this guy is doing, I would think it would put a damper on his Mayoral wishes.
  20. I haven't been up there in years, and even then it was summer fishing. But you might want to try Bapiste, which is supposed to have lakers, and walleye, as well as panfish. There are tons of small lakes in the area that you can wet a line in, just keep an eye out for them on your way up. A lot of them hug the highways leading up to Elephant lake.
  21. I am on another board dedicated to Salmon and Trout fishing on Lake O, and there have been several threads about the same concerns. I went as far as asking Walter (The owner of the GOSD), to set up a meeting with various parties that have vested interests in the derby, including Charters and us Joe Shmoes. He didn't respond. He runs a great derby for people who want to get into the sport of Salmon fishing or just starting out, including us "vetrans. There are many people that are willing to sit down and help him make a good derby greater. But for what ever reason he doesn't respond to anyone who writes a post to him directly, and I don't think there is any point in PMing him directly. As far as prizes, guys you need to remember, the prizes are arranged months before they are even announced, and Walter does try to make it as interesting as possible. So remember to make sure everyone gets their facts straight before you start bashing the guy. Remember this... what's here today can be cancelled tomorrow. The hunt from what I re memberhas been been cancelled at least twice since the mid 80's, and I for one would not want to see it gone. It does a lot of good for many people. Some might say, the GOSD has sustained an industry during current tough economic times. Walter O, if you do read this, take the time and meet with those who want to see the GOSD the best Salmon derby that is east of the Pacific Ocean, north and south of the border!!!!
