well... i think my motor is toast...or at least toast enough to stop putting money into it... so what make has the lead nowadays...i know this is gunna be a mixed bag of answers and please dont get into debates or brand wars... just wanna know what you guys might know about features and performance... im thinking about upping to a 50hp tiller...from my current 40hp... for the days with 3 big guys in the boat(mercman and mercmans brother...lol) and loads of gear and lunches...etc... my main form of fishing is trolling... so a motor that idles low and smooth is key... im leaning towards Yamaha but locally a Mercury is easiest...there is a dealer 5 minutes away on the states side... no matter what im gunna buy in the states... prices are a few thousand dollars lower then in Ontario... one question i have... the capacity plate states that a 45 is the max hp... is it illegal to go over this? or is that a recomendation from the manufacturer? im sure the boat can handle a 60hp motor no problem... and a 50hp would be perfect... anyways... lets hear it everyone... thanks in advance... mike

thank you

Your budget is WAY off for a bass boat... For that price youd have to really shop for a decent 16 foot tinny with a 40-60 hp motor...

well... i guess im the odd man out.... i just got a 7'11" heavy power med fast st croix legend extreme for trolling walleye... on the system we fish paul there are always floating weeds being pushed all over the place through the whole water column by current... its impossible to keep em off your line.... so the heavier stiffer rod makes it easier to "snap" the weeds off without reeling in...it also makes it easier to add the extra action i showed you... a softer rod would just bend and flop.... and if you do run into an unexpected catch(got about 20 musky all the way to 50 inches while fishing walleye last year as well as a 13 pound sheephead and a 25 pound carp...on the troll...)...you have the backbone to land it... i know most guys will say you rip hooks out with these bigger rods... but last time out me and zack got 17 walleye and only missed one that just bumped it... you just gotta set your drag right.... i know one really good angler that uses a musky rod for rod in hand trolling for walleye here... anyways... thats just me and a bunch of guys that troll the larry...

Why are live minnows...leetches...worms... Acceptable bait and not frogs...or mice...? Just curious... Personally...I could never use a mouse... But I've tried a frog when I was younger...

So you guys soend loads of money for custom covers... And you spend hundreds a year getting shrink wrap done...? Why??? I made a abs frame for my boat cover and it works great in the winter...just brush it off if we get wet sticky heavy snow... Otherwise it's fine....

Well for anyone that cares... Or remembers my previous threads about issues I was having with my motor... While I was fixing problems with the work I was doing... Little did I know there was another problem developing... My head gasket went... This is part of the reason I was having such a hard time diagnosing all the issues... Because there was multiple problems... So in the end I took my motor to a mechanic and he found my compression was out of whack... And water in my oil.... So it should be the head gasket... Wich is a pricy fix... Good news is the mechanic is a friend of my brother and is putting a rush on it for me... I dropped it off Sunday and they were working on it Monday morning.... I'm hoping it's ready for the this weekend... Long weekend and I have to prefish for a tourney next weekend...

The Ottawa river is a trophy musky fishery... So go heavy on your gear... 100lb braid... Top of the line swivels and snaps... As for a rod... The st croix premier is a good mid range rod... I like the 7.5 foot heavy model for casting... And I use the st croix premier trolling specific rod for trolling... ...

Fiberglass vs. Aluminum - pros and cons
mike rousseau replied to sneak_e_pete's topic in General Discussion
i was talking more with older boats i guess...once you start getting any hairline cracks in the gel coat water can penetrate... i was told that the gel coat is you 100 percent waterproof barrier... and fiberglass/resin isnt 100 percent water proof... this is just what i was told mind you...it could be wrong... however our older fiberglass boat... water started to penetrate and water-log any floatation and wood... the boat gained a couple hundred pounds....and i know a few others that experienced the same thing.... and these were all people that leave there boats in the water all season... thats just my experience.... and what ive been told...
