The first place I'd try would be where that stream enters the lake, the water from that stream is likely going to be a bit warmer than the lake water so the crappie will concentrate on that area. Apart from that, the North/West shore of the lake where it will be getting the sun early and the water will tend to warm more quickly. Look for shallow areas and a bit of weed or cover. I prefer to use a float (the smaller the better, sometimes the only indication that there is a bite is the slightest movement of that float) with a small jig suspended about 1-2' below the float. You'll have to play around to see what works best but I have had good results with chartruse (sp) twister tails, small flies, Gulp maggots...... but water quality will make a difference, darker water brighter bait. Just keep it small. Timing can also be important, I have fished spots where at 4:00 pm, you couldn't get a bite, by 5:00 pm you couldn't keep them off your hook, and by 6:00 pm they were gone again. I would think early morning at that stream would be a very likely place to start but be patient until you figure out what their pattern is, you may find that they don't come in there until the sun gets up enough to warm up the water a bit. Hope this helps a little.

You do really nice work! -
Roy, if it is a dry chemical type, I was told by a boat inspector that you should turn it upside down once a year and give it a tap with a hard rubber mallet or something similar. This is to insure that the powder hasn't caked in the bottom.

I appreciate the heads up and will look forward to seeing and filling out the survey! Thanks!

That is wonderful news, congratulations to both you and mom!

Give me a call, you've got my number. We'll work something out.

Actually Sinker perhaps you and I need to talk if you are looking for a hunting dog. Don't know if you have had a chance to meet my boy Andy yet but German Shorthaired Pointers are super with kids, and fantastic hunters. They point, track, and retreive. I have a couple of friends with GSPs that still owe me a favour or two, I might be able to hook you up if not for free, for a really good price. You've got my number if you are interested.

Thanks for all the replies and information! Sinker, how heavy would your decoy weights have to be and how many of them would you need? Rodpody: That is a very kind offer, thank you! I do have plenty of jigs. Now, anyone have a sinker mold that they would like to trade for a jig mold???

I tried most of the products out there including Skunk Off and they all seemed to work to some degree but then I tried this one and it was by far the best. NokOut I even use it for my hunting clothing, live well on my boat.

A couple of years ago I bought a mold for casting jigs and some hooks, they are still sitting in my basement un opened. I was going to try to use wheel weights to melt down and cast my jigs and managed to get about 150-200 lbs of wheel weights but they are still sitting in my garage and from the sound of it I'm not going to have time to get into making any jigs so I am thinking of just selling the stuff. Only thing is, I'm not sure if wheel weights are any good for making jigs or should I just take them to the scrap yard and see what I'll get for them there?

Machine through the ice on Sturgeon Lake
Big Cliff replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
Well apart from not wanting to see some young fellow loose his life from having fun, I care about the people that had to go out there and rescue him from the water, I also care about the people that were out there trying to recover his machine from the bottom of the lake and I care about the oil and gas that has been dumped into the water. To run open water when you have a support team or plan in place is one thing, I have run open water on my sled, this young fellow didn't even have a floater suit on! He was just lucky that he wasn't too far from shore and that some people on shore happened to see him go through. He was lucky that there was an aluminum boat sitting upside down on the shore that wasn't frozen into the ice so the rescurers had a way to get out to him. Taking a chance running open water when you know what you are doing and have the equipment in place in case you run into a problem is one thing! Fooling around on thin ice near a strong current, by yourself just to see how far you can go is just stupid in my books! -
Just got home and on our way in the road there were a bunch of people standing on the shore, some people out in a boat on the ice, we stoped to see what was wrong and if we could help. Turns out some idiot was our running around on his sled right where the chanel is and where there was open water just a few days ago..... His machine is now at the bottom of the lake; fortunatly he was cold and wet but survived. Now there are people out there in a boat on the ice, trying to recover his machine. We saw this young fellow riding his machine down in front of our place earlier today and watched him brake through the ice once but he managed to keep going. I guess he just had to keep trying until he didn't make it. Boy I sure hope this teaches him a lesson!

Well, I agree that we are getting gouged on gas but since we pay $0.34/L just in taxes and I doubt we'll ever see that reduced, you can forget seeing reasonable prices for gas ever again. Chris, really sorry to hear about this but you my friend are a survivor!

What I would like to know is how you get a bonus for running a company into the ground? Hydro One; City of Toronto; GM; Ford...... Any one?????

I use my computer a lot, do all kinds of research on it. If I had to limit my use to never visiting any site I didn't know or never opening anything I wasn't absolutly sure was safe, I might as well not have one. From what I have been able to learn from the replies I have gotten here and reading many reviews, none of the solutions are perfect and there will always be some risk no matter what program you are running. I ran AVG and found problems that NOD32 hadn't been able to find, it wouldn't surprise me that if I was to run Norton right now, it might find things that both NOD32 and AVG had missed. I guess the best solution for me is to try to be careful, make sure I have the best software available and keep a back up of my critical data just in case.

Enjoyed the song and the photographs!

I have had to do a few "search and find" missions for my guy, he loves to take off and visit every chance he gets. We have the invisable fence but if you forget to put his collar on him he seems to know and the second you get distracted he is gone. Fortunatly we have always been able to find him and bring him home. Glad things worked out for you and your guy came home safe and sound!

Boy, that was quick, thank you very much for the replies and the help!

For a couple of years now I have been running a program called NOD32 antivirus software which costs me about $35.00/year. I don't have any specific complaints about it other than I have had a few small issues with my computer and I can't really pin those down to being the fault of NOD32 but my subscription runs out on March 4 and I am just wondering if there are better packages available (free if it is good is better LOL). While I am at it, is there any way to easily remove 'temp internet files" I seem to be building quite a pile of them. Should they be removed? All help much appreciated! Cliff
