  1. Oh great, thanks Rick, now I can't even stay off the board when I'm away from a computer... Mike
  2. The horn blaring, lights flashing is the standard greeting? Or waiting with the fishbonker? LOL
  3. One of my favourite ways to fish too. Nothing better than seeing the water bulge and then the attack... Man can't wait til summer... I have had much more success with the quiet / erratic approach (twitch, long pause, twitch twitch) than walking the dog or burning baits back but I have less confidence with the more aggressive approach so I use it less. Mike
  4. Depth Lure action Speed Colour But sometimes when they're on, you could chuck a shoe and get a bite... Mike
  5. Looks pretty darn cold. Cool to see the story & pic in the paper. One way of checking up on him, I guess... Mike
  6. I've been clean for six months since moving and changing jobs, and thought I was out of the woods. But here I am again, with spring and thoughts of fishing on my mind... "Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in." Mike
  7. Beauty fish, gotta love those urban pike... Mike
  8. Hey Dave, Fiddleheads are great steamed or sauteed, but of course with butter & salt. Mike
  9. Hi guys, Been a long time since I dropped in, months actually since moving from Toronto to Kingston. Great to see lots of familiar handles & faces, and lots of new members too. I'm still keen to meet Kingston area OFNCers for a day out or to share info on spots. Speaking of which. I'm trying to organize a 3 or 4 day trip this May to a lodge/resort around here, don't have the time with the new job and now toddler to go too far this year (but next year...). Looking for a lodge/resort that's maybe 3 or 4 hours from Kingston, preferably north of here as I haven't really fishing that part of Ontario or Quebec before. Prefer housekeeping plan but open to all suggestions at this point. Any help would be much appreciated. Mike
  10. I always use a fluoro leader, check out the other thread about breaking off braid. I'm not too concerned about visibility for fish, but trying to break off heavier braid is not easy! Mike
  11. That's a tough one. Your daughter knew the rules, but missing her own birthday party seems like a harsh consequence for still biting her nails. How about she gets probation on her own birthday, but she does miss her friends' parties, which shows that you mean business. And then there's the big one of missing Disney next year if she's still biting by August... Mike
  12. Great report, sounds like a beautiful lake to camp on. And very glad things turned out okay for Bear, we've got a dog ourselves and I'd be really upset if anything ever happened to him. Mike
  13. Head up this weekend... Anybody know if there's a public beach on Little Redstone or Redstone that we could take the kids to one of our days? THanks, Mike
  14. Great news, Lew, glad the surgery went so well... Mike
  15. I do the same thing as oncogene, I never tie braid directly. I always use a fluoro leader, and if I snag and get get it free, I wrap the braid around the handles of my pliers and pull steadily to snap the fluoro or more likely break it off at one of the knots. Mike
  16. Friend is thinking to Six Mile Lake this week and wanted to know if there is a public launch for this lake. Thanks, Mike
  17. Nice report, I visited the petroglyphs a few summers ago but didn't make it to the Warsaw caves... mIKE
  18. Very helpful ideas for when my son is old enough to take fishing, nicely done! MIke
  19. A buddy of mine swears by goby-coloured tubes on the great lakes. Mike
  20. Great, congrats to your son. That smile says everything! Mike
  21. Well, after living in Toronto for quite a long time, great job opportunity for me and for my wife too means we will be moving to Kingston at the end of the summer. Like the city (lived there for five years while going to school) and everybody tells me it's a great place to raise a kid. Wondering if there are other OFNCers in/near Kingston who would be interested in partnering up for a half-day or day on the water once we move. We know a few people in Kingston but none of them are passionate about fishing as far as I know. Would be great to meet some other fishermen once we've had some time to settle in. Mike
  22. Bump, in case somebody else has some suggestions for me. Will be going up to the cottage in couple of weeks. Will post a report when we get back. Thanks, Mike
  23. Sounds like fun. Is this the Bass Lake near Orillia? I've fished it a couple of times, did okay for bass (nothing big though) once I found the weedbeds on the north side. Mike
  24. Nice pike, glad to see the Islands can still produce... Mike
  25. Gloves can remove mucus too, I think the important thing is that your hand (or glove) is wet. One more thing that I didn't see above is to have your tools and camera ready, so the fish is out of the water for as little time as possible. Pliers, jaw spreaders, bolt-cutters (if you are chasing big Esox), glove if necessary. Mike
