With that broad body and what appears to be a red tinge on the lower and tail fins, I'd echo the guys who said Redhorse Sucker too. Down here there is a River Redhorse that resides in the lower Grand River.

The pickerel rig is the easiest way to get the minnows a foot or so off the bottom, keeping it infront of the perch and out of the reach of gobies( for the most part ). I find it way easier than trying to estimate where the bait is sitting using a float, especially in deeper water like Bronte Haroubr.

I echo the use of a swivel, and not just any swivel, but a ball-bearing swivel. I enjoy fishing spinner as well and throw 'em a lot. I find a good ball-bearing swivel definately helps with( but doesn't neccessarily eliminate )line twist.

I feel for my fellow Hammer-tonians who are now dealing with the aftermath of flooded basements. I just had to help my Mom mop a bit of water that creeped into her basement( unfinished )in the east end of the city and I considered us very lucky compared to others.

I know some of you have found that the "Do Not Call List" has helped reduce the number of telemarketers, but honestly, I havent! So frustrating!!! Most are very cordial when I say; "No I'm not interested and please take me off your list." But these calls just keep coming!!!!!! AAAAARGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I give. What is it?

I love tossing in-line spinners into pools, myself, for smallies. Just remember to use a ballbearing swivel to help minimize line twist. Also, try tossing a tube if the fish aren't active. And when all else fails, and you don't mind messing around with crawlers, a float and worm can save your day. I actually start with a float and worm on many of my river outings.

I fish the Grand a lot but not in the evening hours so I can't comment on fishing at dusk. I CAN say that the early morning bite is good. It's funny how you can just watch the bite tail off more and more the higher the sun gets. By noon it's Miller time! If I can't get the the river by first light, I don't even like going.

Wow, what a nice river smallie! You got your nephew into a nice one and he looks like he did a darn nice job of bringing it in! And no problems with the casting either, eh? Terrific! I've introduce my niece and nephews to fishing at a young age and once they get a handle on just casting, I find it frees up my time to help 'em with other stuff and actually get a little fishing in myself. Way to go Uncle! Maybe a good idea to put him into some hip-waders. That water's darn cold now. Cheers!

I've gone on walks with my daughter to see some of the waterfalls and it's a great way to spend a day hiking and picture taking. Enjoy your time Frozen-fire! Make sure your camera batteries are topped up! You're right, you won't find the streams filled with fishies thought. If you'd like to get some fishing in, you might consider heading over to Hamilton Harbour Bayfront Park. Lots of Shore access to cast from all the way to Williams Coffee Pub and the Marine Heritage Centre. Sheepshead, Carp, Bass, Pike, Perch, Sunfish are all present. Plus, the two of ya can take a break and enjoy some grub at Williams or Hutches down there.

You overnight guys are crazy! Fishin' crazy that is. Good on ya. I've left the harbour at sunset many times bidding a good night to the die-hards who planned on staying 'til morning. Never quite did it myself yet. Nice you were rewarded for your efforts and that's a beauty mirror! Still waiting to catch one of those myself.

I echo Hammercarp's recommendation of the platform at Canada Centre For Inland Waters. Nice and close to you, and a great spot to hook into some big, bad carp right now. Also, regarding the pontoon thing, Lungehaven Camp on Sturgeon Lake used to have a couple of pontoon boats they rented out along with their 14-foot tinnies. I haven't been there in years but it was a nice camp with good fishing for walleye. Goodluck and welcome to the board!!!
