  1. cool pics, love the steelie shot with all the ice and winter backdrop
  2. my guess is unburnt oil if it's black....my old 9.9 does that if sitting for long periods of time, there will be a bit of drippage from the prop and also from the water drain holes(exhaust come out with the water on my model)
  3. my little one just uses one of my ultralite combos She has taken a real liking to my Pflueger Trion combo....it's her "big people" fishing rod
  4. pretty nice video there, puts a whole other dimension on the fishing thing when you can see them...I would be sitting there saying.."come on....come on...take it..." and sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation You can weed through the really little ones that way...you see them come up to your bait and just yank it away from them
  5. some decent perch there Bigugli, hoping to get out there with you folks soon, maybe I can show you guys how NOT to lose the pike
  6. that's a good haul on any day..way to go on your fist time out there
  7. now that's and adventure , they should make that like a triathelon...cross country/snowboard/fishing
  8. just not something I thought I would ever see at a grocery store that's all..but not quite as funny as wehn my now 13 year old was a couple years younger, we where at the store and the meat dept. had rabbit and she hollers over to me.." hey Dad, look at this, it looks like a wiener dog". And couple people started laughing when they heard her say that. It was a "had to be there thing" but some other shoppers got a good kick out of it.
  9. headed out with the wife last night to ditch the kids for a few house and go to a friend's house to play some cards and have a few brews. They asked if we could stop at Sobey's to pick something up for them on the way. As I was walking down by the frozen food section what do I see in the box????? I was laughing and called my wife over, and telling her that "now I have seen everything"..yepper you guessed it.... semi boneless Turducken I couldn't believe it..want to know somehting else too...price was something like $69.99, now I wonder if they are actually going to sell many of those. I wonder if they would mind if I sanpped a picture to share I still think that is the funniest thing I ever saw for sale at a grocery store
  10. now that totally reminds me of some great meals at my mom's. When my step Dad was alive, mom would cook up a great batch of what they always called "Jig's Dinner" a big family gathering at mom's always had a big pot of that boiling up.
  11. pretty cool pics and stories guys. There was a fox down in the Niagara Glen that would come around and steal minnows out of our bucket. In the summer the water is low in the morning and raises later on in the morning a considerable amount. So we would be fishing but our gear and stuff is left way up the bank. It was pretty funny to turn around to see a fox slinking away from the minnow bucket having a much down...fish for a few minutes look back there it is again. I will have to see if I can find some pics to share and scan them, didn't have a digital camera back then thanks for sharing the pics
  12. ya thanks for emailing me that one this morning Bruce
  13. it's waste with American beer for GCD you can put a little revamp on the recipe and just use Spam, it will remind you of that down home cookin like momma used to make great looking idea, my wife wants to try that now..thanks for sharing
  14. I can see the Upper Niagara from my driveway,I live like 2 blocks away from it, and yepper it has seen alot of ice...lake Erie is locking up so it will get better..hopefully a solid ice bridge forms soon on the lower and it's all good to go. Also keep in mind it has been windy, lots of SW wind off the lake that keeps the water murked up, on top of that lots of snow, then meltoffs have seen a few days where the water has risen like 10-15 feet, then with the cold snap it has made alot of shove ice on the shore line..some of it is on a fairly steep angle pointing right toward the water, other places it over hangs the water and the current steadily undercuts it....NOT SAFE to stand on. be careful where you fish!!!! Also use caution and stay on the trails like mentioned, if conditions didn't really suck lately you would have seen a bunch of reporst from me over the last couple weeks
  15. rainbows, browns and lakers are all in season right now...rainbows and browns never close on the river lots of ice in a few spots right now or I wouldn't be sitting here typing, I would be out in my boat in areas with a good drift..bottom bouncing a 3 way rig with a minnow, imitation,or streamer is a hot ticket this time of year. Also float fishing with the same baits. Kwikfish work well on a 3way as well. In slacker current areas jigs have there place. As for spoons be prepared to loose a bunch if you aren't expereinced in the river...simple silver lures are great, cleos, crocs, williams the 1/2 and 1/2 williams are great as well. Keep in mind that the river has been murky/chocolate milk for almost a month, tonnes of ice flows have been around as well making it very tough to fish. It's just starting to look up
  16. some great looking fish and cool photo effects. haven't seen some beauty specks like that nor fished for them for about 12 years since I lived in The Soo for a while. Those are hog brookies
  17. 12 months a year..I avidly fish the Niagara in the cold months so there are always open water fishing options. Although the last few weeks have been less than favorable conditions, and this big cold snap has been kind of bad, I can't wait to get the boat out over the next while, soon as it warms up about 5-10 degrees..lol and the windchill staves off. I do however have some hard water plans in the near future as well
  18. That's awesome, I already offered a long time ago while it was still in the 'thinking stage" to lend a hand on the Port Dalhousie Pen project..it's great news for that area. I look forward to talking to a few of the people involved in the project at the St Catherine's G&F when I go down toward the end of the month. I am going to be the guest speaker that day to talk about my involvement the last couple years with the MNR in a walleye tagging/relocating/rearing/stocking project I am involved with. I am hoping to learn more about the pen project and also looking forward to just connecting a bit more with another local club so that perhaps down the road we may be able to work together on projects, perhaps start a new one, and really just raise some more awareness to some who may not know just what sort of programs the clubs are into, and perhaps just promote a bit more that all the areas conservation-game& fish clubs should network with eachother when volunteers are needed and such. great going. must be some great news for you guys in the Darlington area
  19. nice going, after all the trouble I read about the "sled problems" you needed to get out there and hammer a few fish
  20. thanks guys, you really can learn alot when out helping with some volunteer time on different outdoors projects. I have learned of some great places just to take a hike, some new fishing holes, some great areas for different game and such along the way the last few years. I have also learned alot more about wildlife habitat and restoration. I have also learned how to raise walleye from the ground up..right from collecting brood stock to stocking a designated area with the young fry...and have since seen and heard lots of great feedback as fruits of our labour in the process.
  21. great family report!! I always love seeing kids get out there fishing and the stories of some great fmaily values passed on along the way out there
  22. key point I noticed mentioned was finding "the sweet spot" to get your boat back on the trailer if you drive your boat on the trailer..if you have load guides on the trailer you just have to figure out how far in the water you want the trailer...too little is ok, you can always winch the boat up the rest of the way..too far in the water is a problem..you will run the boat right up over the tower, perhaps ramming the boat right into the tower..or smashing into the back of the tow vehicle,or bashing your lower unti into the back of the trailer. My boat for example, best to run the boat up on the trailer if the back of the load guides is just touching the water, just takes some trial and error..just remember if you have a tiller, it's a longer run up to the bow to try and stop any incidents if they happen.. , I have a side console and first season with the boat I almost pout it throught the back windshield of my van ,soon as I hit the trailer I knew it was going to go up too far so I ran to the front and grabbed the winch tower so the hull wouldn't smash into that (that would be a nasty possibility of a good rip in the side of the boat) and the bow of the boat just touched the tailgate of the van...no damage done and a good lesson learned. Remember as well if you have a kicker motor your boat will tend to list to one side making it a bit harder to get centred on the trailer
  23. As some of you may know from some of my posts and replies, I am a trustee on the executive committee for a local conservation club the Fort Erie Conservation Club. One of our annual programs there is to build wood duck nesting boxes. They are then taken out to various places in the area where there is good possible habitat, lots of forest, a good watershed, lots of other wildlife, and some areas where some of these ducks have been spotted over the years. They are put up around the conservation area property as well as some in hunting zones as well as some wooded ares in the no-fire zone as well. This is all to hopefully help promote wood duck reproduction in the area as something the club does toward wildlife and habitat enhancement every year. Yesterday I got a call from my friend too see if I wanted to lend a hand going out and checking up on the boxes, see what we find along the way, clean them out, change the bedding inside, check on the general condition of the boxes and see if we need to put up any new ones or any additional boxes. While this big cold snap kept many inside, we on the other hand, had to take advantage of the cold and the good solid ice on the creek areas so we could get out there and to the boxes. These areas are not easily accessible in the spring and summer as they are grown in super thick with lots of scurb and every wild plant with prickers on it possible , other areas are muddy swamp areas with a mosiquito population that rates right up there with the best outpost camp This is the ideal time of year to do it while we know we have good solid first ice. Here is a bit of an example of what we had to walk through along the way..this was carrying a ladder, some tools and a bag of bedding as well...would not have been such an easy task through the overgrowth and swamp if it where warm out. You just never know WHOOOO might find one of these a comfy little home Seems this one wasn't getting along well with the neighbour..he found out what the punch line was for .."knock-knock.....whooooo's there !!!! " You can see the poor little guy got a bit banged up and decided the house next door was more suitable but propbaly should keep a good eye on the neighbour Speaking of squirrels, you can't quite make it out, but here is Dan at another box in the bush, he opens it up and something was moving inside right away!!!!, after like 10 seconds 2 squirrels come leaping right out practically on his head. After a good little laugh he pokes back around, ..ooops someone else is home..out leaps another, but wait still someone in there....after some more prodding around Dan finds another tail..this one didn't want to go...you can't see in the pic, but Dan is pulling one out by it's tail After the rude little evacuation all was put back together and thier little shack got a cleaning and a fresh new bed of wood chips. Couldn't believe 4 squirrels packed into there!! Here is a bit better way to get around once we could get deeper into the bush and onto the frozen creek Along the way we where surprized to find what decided to live in this bird box. Some wild mountain honey. I guess after that point if we where lost and stranded in the cold woods we wouldn't have went hungry..mmmmm honey roasted squirrel We where very happy to find a great sign in this box here All in all it was a great wintery day to get out in the bush, do some exploring, and do a little bit to give back to the outdoors that I value so much. You can learn alot getting involved in different little wildlife/habitat enhancement projects. You get so see some great scenery and nature sights, I have learned of a few great fishing holes along the way as well that are not well known and all in all just get a great feeling when I can give something back to our resources. Stay tuned throughout the year for a few more reports along the wya of different projects I am involved with..we will be hanging and cleaning some more duck boxes in the next while...spring is working with the MNR on a walleye tagging/rearing/stocking project, I will be helping with a pen rearing/imprinting project,I just got light of a grass pickeral study that may possibly help save a good wetland from developement, and after that will also be involved in a bird release as well....for a few years it has been ring neck pheasants as a "put and take" bird as they do not really do well in the wild from "farmed" stock..the genetics just isn't there. This year we are trying to see if we can obtain and release grey partridges or a simular bird. I am looking forward to all the things I have coming up for the year
  24. I heard somewhere that they don't make those little ones any more for some reason
  25. I have a funny PC game..Deer Hunter's Revenge...the deer hunts the people The deer looks for signs of hunters...girly mags, empty beer cans, toilet paper ect....and when you use the calls it says stuff like.."hey,who left the lights on in thier pick up?" or a girls voice says "hi boys, I am naked, and I brought pizza"..and " viagra...get yer viagra" ..when you finally lure out a hunter...the deer locks and loads it up and says stuff like.."let's rock and roll"
