You are right about lots of those lamprey and not feeding on fish, mostly filter feed on the bottom. They may hitch a ride, but would not take down a fish. However, it was well documented that the lamprey invasion was a major cause of the crash of the trout...not saying that over fishing did affect it...just added to the already crashing populations. Just a tidbit....an adult lamprey when an adult, can kill 40 or more lbs of fish.

Hey Xeon, Dont get to worked up about it. Me along with at least 1 other person on this board have and still are treating great lakes tributaries for adult and larval lamprey. What i noticed from travelling across Ontario, NY, and MI, is that not too many people actually worry about them. Sometimes we get the good for you, good job spiel and sometimes we get lambasted for killing, and harming the fish and ecosystems...some people go out of there way to try to help and even learn and spread knowledge of them, some don't care. Lots of times its just lack of knowledge with the species and the destruction that can be caused from them. Remember the crash the Lake Trout populations happened in the mid 1900's when people were just born or not even around, so they havent seen the effects that they can cause, and only lately have commercial and sport fisherman started to see the rebound. The problem is still under the water and not really in our faces....out of sight...out of mind for lots of people.

We just got 3 inches of the white stuff yesterday, adn Michipicoten Bay (Superior) is still froze. The inland lakes still have a good 24 inches of solid ice...feels like an ice age this year. I cant wait for Spring...oh wait...its here

nice set up...just a question for you though. What made you decide to mount the electronics where you did, rather than right across form you on the starboard side. I know personally with the location there i would be turning too much, rather than mounting on the opposite side? Just curious...no offence if taken. Thanks

I was around 17, and my dad and I entered the Salmon Derby up here...we have never won, but sometime would place. On the first day of the derby, the friday...we were trolling in an area where there wasnt any boats....when the rod beside my dad pops...as he is fighting the fish...my knees are shaking and he is shaking, and for some reason is questioning everything he is doing with the fish...right or wrong...after a few minutes when its in the boat we look at each other...exstatic...looking at each other..shaking and happy...we go in to the weigh in and are thinking its big but not overly large...my brother was working at the dock with my grandma and when they saw us coming up...he knew something was fishy...as we dont come in unless we are having issues...or a fish...when we showed him the fish, he was like Donavan Bailey running the 100...all the way to the scales...turns out its just over 23lbs. We ended up winning the derby...the most nerve wracking and exciting derby for me ever...its one weekend when we still talk about it...its hard not to get the chills...that is 1 memory that i will never forget. -
I am glad i am living where i am, where we dont have turkeys...or i might be using a bow and arrow all year long on the "nuissance" birds
