What a day! Thanks for taking the time. Jim

It was just too nice to stay in, so I grabbed my nephew and headed out to the reef. I am not sure what smallies are supposed to be doing this time of year so we started out by trolling with Rapalas (perch and a silver/black) with no success. I ended up grabbing this 3 odd pounder with the tried and true YUM dinger that has been grabbing them all summer. Ran into a fellow OFC'er and others who all confirmed that the bite was tough. What a day though. Jim

I am having a hard time trying to think of something to say after reading your post (the tears being only part of the problem). My most sincere and deepest sympathy is yours and if you were within hugging distance it would take me along time to let go. Warmest regards, Jim

Sorry boys, drinking and late night posting don't go well together for me

This gets 14 responses? Did I mention that I had some fall walleye questions.

I was just reading up on fall walleye fishing (I am heading up to Big Doe the week after Thanksgiving) in an article from this forum (Toughing Out the Turnover: Fall Walleye Tactics, By Tim Allard, October 2004) and a “jig and grub tipped with a minnow” was mentioned as a lure to use. My question is: What is this supposed to represent? Does the walleye think that it is a minnow eating a grub (does the walleye think at all) or what? And, if you use a scented grub, is there a need for the live bait to scent the rig? Also, will the “turnover” have taken place by then, or should walleyes still be where they were the last time I was there (the lake does have some deep bits)? Thanks all! Jim

I have seen lots of pictures of fish, but those are the first real fish arches that I have seen on a sonar (looked like a simulator). Thanks. Jim

Could a society that favours open casket funerals complain about the odd moose corpse?

We were out there as well Rich, and had two smallish (4-6lbs) pike to show for it. No shortage of boats eh? -
For me, Dingers and Tubes are new (so I'm a little slow) and they have worked very well. What have suffered a bit are classics like Rapalas and Flatfish. I have also fished new water this year (Erie being one, Cameron another). I have loved Erie, Cameron not so much. I am dying over the fact that the season is coming to an end. Jim

I only get the shows on Global on Saturday mornings, and they are all re-runs.

That's a tough one Beans. I am sorry for your loss. Jim

Then our transformation to third world country will be complete. Our standard of living will be nil, we will be working for peanuts, and countries will be sending work here as we are now the cheapest labour in the world. Then the circle will start all over again. I loose sleep over this crap. Jim

Congratulations on a great day. As a high school teacher, I am here to tell you that you both made the right choice. And I love those boots (hers, not yours)! Jim

I have three Excelers (1500 and two 2500) and love them. I have found them the cheapest at LeBaron (at regular price that is). Jim

What is truly unfortunate is that telemarketing is one of the few industries that are still thriving in Canada (yes I know that half of them are not coming from Canada). People have to work somewhere. To quote the Boss: “They’re closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they aint coming back to Your hometown, your hometown, your hometown, your hometown” I hope that they don’t tear out all of the phone lines and tear down all of the vacant factories, because when our transformation to third world country is complete they will be needed again.

Great topic! I have been extremely pleased with my purchase to date. The dealership (Proctor in Simcoe) has been great, although the store suffered a major loss when Tom passed away. Nothing compared to the family’s loss of course, but that kind of knowledge is next to impossible to replace. I am doing my level best to stave off “foot-itis” and also to keep in mind that I am essentially a fair weather fisherman. That is to say that I am still happy with the side console and not having a tent to erect over the boat. It also means that I will likely skip the boat show this year to resist temptation. If I had to critique my boat slightly it would be as follows: • Crestliner’s website sucks (it makes you use the dealer instead of being able to talk to them with questions). • The slide in mooring cover is a brilliant design (almost no snaps), but the plastic catches do wear the paint. • There are a couple of small quality issues with the build. You have to look to see them, but they are there (for example, the bloody Crestliner logo is slightly crooked on the dash!). I also try to keep in mind that my boat is an entry level package boat. I am fine with the 45 lb. 12 volt. It pulls great and lasts as long as I’ve ever needed (I did install an on-board charger, after market). The fish finder (Lowrance X50 DS) works well enough I guess, or at least until I see something that looks better to me. Being new to boat ownership has been a fantastic experience. There is no better feeling than sitting in your own boat fishing. It is still new enough that the catching of fish is almost a pleasant side benefit. I know that will ring as strange on this board, but that’s still how it is. Essentially, I am thrilled. Jim

I too have a new Crestliner Fish Hawk (1600). If anything, on mine the steering is too tight. There is absolutely no play and no shaking. It is as solid as Sears. I loosened off the steering tensioning screw on the motor and (especially when under load) there are times when I have to use two hands to turn the wheel. I had it back to Proctors and they said it was normal (the newness perhaps?). Sorry, I know that this doesn't help you much, except to say if it's new, get it back to the dealer. Jim

Great report! Thanks for the look. -
Nice fish. I too have caught loads of fish near that rectangle.

Nevermind the same fish, I think it's the same picture! They look healthy though eh? Perfect fish. Good call by the way, on the work vs. fishing question.

Hi All, I have a situation with my mooring cover on which I could use some advice. The inside of the cover looks like the cat had kittens on it. It is all black and splotchy (like mildew) inside, while the outside is as clean as a whistle. Does this happen to everyone? Do I use the cover too much (without taking it off)? Or do they need regular scrubbing and I have been negligent in my duties? Any help (including the best way to clean it) would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Anyone have any experience with Ultracraft boats?

Aparently, not.
