If someone here get's the new gloves from Simms this year, please report back! The Exstream Foldovers, G4, and Skeena seems like they all could be very good. So far it looks like the only dealer I've found for them is the fly shop (Wilson's) on Queen in Toronto.

Think you're chasing leprechauns here. I own the kast gloves and although they're waterproof, they don't keep water off the surface. If it's cold enough outside, you're looking at a layer of ice freezing onto the glove, and you're back to being cold. Only solution is to ensure that your gloves are taken off when landing a fish, and wiping dry before putting your gloves back on. At that rate, you can use any fleece, wool, or fancy glove you'd like that fits your requirements for warmth and dexterity The latex glove solution may work, but it might be too many layers for me to deal with.

Good stuff dude! The 110+1 sure is a pretty smallmouth jerkbait!

6# mono has been my favourite so far. Pick your favourite brand and the line that claims to be lowest memory would be your best bet.

We've just put 400 twists and 100' of line in a reel that I believe most people claim impractical after about 25-30' when fishing. I'm not a pin fisherman at all, but then didn't we just somewhat agree that a swivel fixes (some/most) line twist problems? Remember when fluoro was marketed as the only thing you should use because of its invisibility, no stretch etc? I might be missing some benefits of an inline, but I'm having a hard time being swayed that it is the end-all to ice fishing. Let's just all be friends and go out and have a great ice season whatever your reel preferences are. I'm sure we could go days about how a jig that's dropped too fast to a fish will spook it, or a slower descent will make you miss suspended cruisers. Maybe I'll see the benefits when I get my butt handed to me fishing next to one sometime this season.

That's on my list this year as well. I have to back up a statement that it takes 8 man hours to figure out how to catch a single walleye from there. I've only got 4 left. lol.

Let's put it this way - The marketing of in-line reels finally made it into the mainstream in Ontario last year. The inline reels today are finally updating their technology to have a decent drag, free spool, and other features that I may not be familiar with. Not to say that these are bad reels nor am I bashing on those that own one. You've simply bought yourself a new tool that has great potential to catch a ton of fish. Having never owned one, I won't go into comparing. I will say what I can visually see in a fish tank with a spinning reel on a tungsten jig and small plastic with a small swivel a foot above. When doing small jigging motions (1" to 3"), the tail of my bait may have a range of 60° to 90° of rotation. (360° being a full circle). On a bigger jig (9" to 1'), the tail may go 180° to 360° after it lands but I have yet to have witnessed my jigs spin wildly with the swivel above. More power to you if you feel that you can do better with an inline, but I will stick with my spinning reels. I do believe that the best ice (pan)fishermen are the ones with a precise presentation along with one other trait that we'll discuss another day

I think I may have expressed my opinion on this before, but I honestly see no point in using something less efficient under a claim of "no line twist". Is that not what swivels are for? If you cannot control line twist on a spinning reel (especially if you've fished for more than a couple of years), you should really be rethinking how to spend your free time.

Just seeing who's getting the itch yet. I've got it pretty bad but the snow and Monday is turning me off just a bit. So far I've done: Painted some glow in the dark paint to my panfish rods to become better at bite detection during low light conditions. Haven't made any big purchases yet this year after last year's splurging, but am looking at a hard rod case potentially. And lastly bought myself my very first tipup. Let's hear from you guys

Who do you believe, weather predictions NF
EC1 replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I use a combination of 3 apps to guess the median. Weatherbug, Wunderground, and Accuweather. Weatherbug did call the rain that I saw this past Friday where none of the others even mentioned. -
Fortunately after the first time I ran out of juice, the jerry can stays in the canoe. I have a feeling the motor may be leaking gas - starting the motor in a bucket results in a stained bucket. It practically is a must to run WOT for me to make it worth putting on the canoe as the trolling motor runs about 5km/h and the Johnson hits about 11km/h Thanks for the heads up everyone.

Hey all, just wondering how many km's should an old Johnson 2 horse should run on one tank(inside motor). Ran out of juice a couple times in the past and felt like I didn't get much out of it. 5-6km if that. I would assume it fits about 1 - 1.5L of gas. Thanks for any tips!

Spare spool for a stradic ci4+ 2500. Thanks for the tips!
-
Wanted to get a couple of spare spools for spinning reels for the winter season... Where would it be easiest to get them? I hear Shimano in Peterborough doesn't carry parts. Thanks guys,

hmmm. To go fish or spend money on tackle over the weekend.

Beauty boat dude! With one of these things, you'll be able to do everything a 40k rig can do, Best of luck for the bass season!
-
Solid fish! You're lucky you're so far from Toronto. #1 sin is to name a crappie lake. lol.

Lake trout are one of the most aggressive fish I've ever fished for. I don't like trolling, so I usually prefer to do something similar to ice fishing. Either anchor and fish with the sonar, or drift over deep to shallow transitions & points. Since you are not fishing simcoe, I tend to like a small quarter oz tungsten jig tipped with plastic. Big rips, small jigging actions are all fair game.

Yes, tons of people have bought into one rod for one technique. But after collecting rods for a few years, I noticed that most rods are much more versatile than advertised. And most importantly, spend a day trying the rod. You might be pleasantly surprised

I like quick responses! Makes a ton of sense now. Thanks! I will make a quick guess, that Scugog gets so muddy because of its bottom composition along with the runoff from nearby farms, and towns.
-
Trying to wrap something around in my head right now... What exactly happens to lakes when they freeze over and become crystal clear, and as soon as they thaw, it becomes a murky lake with 1 - 2 feet of visibility. An example I can think of would be Scugog. All theories, scientific or not are welcome. Thanks!

Really, there's no perfect way to produce electricity nowadays. Nuclear is better? Perhaps snow covered solar panels? Or hydro-electric dams that block out fish migration? I guess nuclear is probably best in Ontario as we won't be seeing any major earthquakes and tsunamis on the Lake Ontario shores. But yes, I would like to know who to vote for the next election. Do we still have the marijuana party around? lol.

Changes to fishing regulations for cisco (lake herring) in Lake Simcoe
EC1 replied to TJQ's topic in General Discussion
Had my first cisco earlier this year (Not from Simcoe) - Tastes just like any other fish, has the same cucumber smell as whities, just not as pronounced. Now I'm really interested to catch a few to use as bait. I'm not so interested in keeping whitefish, so both of these options are fine by me. If only the limit was closer to 5 or 10, I wouldn't need to buy live bait anymore. -
Reading skills are obviously not up to par. And if that's the case, there should be some sort of fish in there by now. I have seen fish caught when the fisherpeople had to push/break the last chunk of ice around in the canals Timing them and hoping that they'll stick within casting distance from your backyard, is more of a coinflip. I do remember one day where I used a canoe to look for fish in the "less pressured" canals to only find millions of baitfish, and the people fishing from shore were catching a few.

This year was a mix of the best and worst conditions on the ice. One week it would be glare ice, the next it would take over an hour to walk a km. Full throttle on the snowmobile I bet really got some adrenaline going. Love the snowpile shot at the cabin! Glad you made it out, and nice walleye. Is that a smallie mixed in there?
