Ontario place pike.... who is gonna fish first?
waterwolf replied to gforce's topic in General Discussion
it was nasty out there when i drove by in the mornin' i'll be waiting a week for sure there's still alot of ice ,, you'd be limited in where you could throw for 'em. what's involved in getting a harbor permit when i do get primed to hit the lake?? anyone have an idea? -
you're right over 48 would be a shame to boat and not have an accurate measurement . different pond ,, those subs come in big. good luck and hope the larger tape is required this summer.

braid for me has been a godsend .bought my first baitcaster last year [ a decent model] and had a couple of birds -nests , fewer than expected, but had fewer cutouts than i'd thought . icefishing ,,same deal ,rock hook-sets in deeper water ,no stretch. 30lb wipes out worry of breakage in most app'sand is very manageable.20lb with a flouro leader is undetectable and casts like a bullet the new braid ,,,,is the new black.

agree with rizzo ,probably will be tarnished by ignorance. great artwork and patriotic heart. hope this remains unblemished , it says so much to those and their families in the forces .

gotta work friday but right after i get home from brookies and rainbows saturday ,,,, i'm blowin' the dust off the VISA for a shop-a-thon . gonna pick up a new reel for sure . the cold really affected 2 of my shimano's this winter , the drag seems to freeze up and lost a couple fish 'cause of it on hook-set.[ one of which was on the saturday at the island lake derby] she didn't engage at all . sooooo i thought i should get some insurance in a new reel while i'm figuring out what went wrong . just gotta sell the idea now ,, like asking for myallowance again, lol.

the mnr dropped by last fall to say hello while i was in the relic-jet-boat and they were kind enough to give me a stick -on ruler . great for my tin-boat . nice to see the guys out on geogian .

browsing around the other night ,late ,much like tonight ,and stumbled on an offer for the rod and reel hat ,,,, a bunch of stuff . if i'm gonna renew, i thought i wouldn't mind a new hat. there's a back-pack offer right now , which is great too, but i think i want the hat and shades. anyone seen such an animal in their travels?

ahhh,, so you too have an ENERGIZER FATHER. the " r " in these trannies ain't for Reverse or certainly not Relax. flat out Race seems more appropriate. when even hernia's won't slow 'em down you gotta wonder ,,,, what the sam elliot are you made of ??? great to see that level of energy at you're age dad but can you do something 'bout the size of those shoes you're wearin'? lol

for a lot of guys most items have already been addressed, spinner -baits, rapala's and most softies. ths sale [from my perspective ] covers a lot more . reels [ of better quality at decent savings]lures at fair value . even if you didn't come to spend a lot of money on specific items , bps sales are always a good time .[especially] if you're in the area.] why not? you work hard .? right? it's only a couple hun... birthday 's comin' up right? honey,,,,,i don't ask for much ,,,,, down in flames ...... orry the kids need new shoes... just when you thought it was safe to bring out the bps card ,,,,, boom,,,,," credit on condition. "she has made new rules... if you promise to....... and then promise to......then you can go fishing with your new fishing stuff. that's why we men invented ......ICEFISHING........fewer chores to do in the winter.... more time to fish.

just got back from my visit to new brunswick with my folks . my dad says he's helpin' out at the legion. here we go. he's 70 years old with a bad leg. he replaced an 86 year old gentleman 'cause there's no one else. beer and liquor inventories in and out , beer empties out, food costs and profit margins , pop inventories , card games , entry revenues,,,,, . he alone runs that legion branch #87 browns flat , new brunswick. this building has 3 seperate levels of alcohol storage.[stairs] he puts instock away personally . on band nights it gets worse. why does he do it ??? i think i understand . after spending only 5 days i met probably 70 people my dad introd' me to . a very high % SHOOK MY HAND and welcomed me back home . the people i met reminded me about what it means to be a good neighbor .even the city plow guys look after the old folks with longer driveways ,because it's right. he has so many friends , really good people who meet at the corner store for coffee every wednesday to talk about , of course the weather. mom's okay with the legion thing ,, the coffee on wed. thing ,,,, she speaks her mind,,,,'"get outta here you old coot , jeopardy's on"

nice thick , healthy , fish. solo pic's never really do the fish [ or fisherman ] justice. lol. my best pike was photo'd solo. 39 inches, looked about 5lbs. flat on the ice next to the rod and reel. what a joke . feel your pain. a guy about 1\3 amile away for a good pic wasn't worth losin' a great fish . thanks for the report . tight lines .

When Does Common Sense Allow Us to See Past the Regulations?
waterwolf replied to Casey123's topic in General Discussion
great debate . old -school versus the new eco- friendly ideolgoy . it's really only common -sense . most of us know the fishery we're on . simcoe is certainly blessed with an abundance of perch . taking home a dinner or two [family size ,average]should pose no prblems . bleeding a small lake of a limit of lakers each time you go out 'cause it's legal ?,you see what i'm saying. yes it's either ends of the spectrum but it carries weght . the limits provided to us should be regared as a guide of a water-bodies state of health, not a factual finite indication of allowable harvest. -
winter pike is great . just like any fish, take off the fillet. loose the skin. i call mine the 6 fillet method. each full fillet is cut into 3 pcs. the 2 tail portions have no bones so they are exempt. each of the 2 forward pcs. are cut in half following the y's carefully then down thru . i find if care is taken not a lot of flesh is wasted . that hammer i caught today received a surgeons- level filleting. thought he was a bit lean to make the derby but he was tongue -artery hooked and was comin' home either way. check the google . many info sites .

got up at 7:oo looked outside ,and realized i should be on the ice . anywhere, doesn't matter. orangeville res. is close , what the heck. threw some gear in the truck and gone.had a 2 o'clock curfue so it'll have to do .get to the lake and the attendent asks if i would like to enter the derby . derby , what derby? prizes were half decent for the $20 entry and the largest pike registered was only 25in. i'm in and on the ice. today being the last day of the derby made my confidence dance. i've caught bigger there , no problem. after 3 failed attempts at my dead-stick bait these small pike needed help finding sharpened steel . stinger hooks should do the trick. not 'til 12:30 did i finally get my 4th suptle hit but the outcome was in my favour. this fish was quite a spectacle. you know things are slow when guys leave their set-ups to come see a hammer -handle iced. only heard of one other pike iced all day , at this point ,,, slow day. 1st position 25in 2nd,, 22in and a bit more , 3rd place ,,, 22in and a bit less. my pike ,,21in and a bit . no prizes for me . i just wanted that shiny new power auger. funny , no perch and only one crappy registered . no pic's sorry, wasn't expecting this close finish .

W O W !!!!! 5 months . no wonder , it would have taken that long to muster-up that much gusto to get out and do that survivor series audition. cohonies like grapefruits. awesome post . thanks for sharin'. what next , the falls in a barrel?

i think we both understand the function of how a dam manipulates the outflow out a chosen river system. point at hand here is the reason a lake's water level cannot be properly sustained . similarly sized lakes in the vicinity maintain constant water levels throughout the winter months . lower than normal but stable. why?

i don't know if you have been out west but it would be an experience you won't soon forget. an hour from the rockies . i think i have to agree with some of the other guys . age dictates your incredible opportunities. hard to do later with a mortgage.

open ended is the consideration . go , give it your best .only if you have a cushion to come home to if things are not exactly what the forecast suggested ,come home. got a friend willing to make the same leap? half the cost to get started . once settled , away you go. the in-betweens are easier to handle with a buddy is at your side to help you both out.

i don't mean to make my ignorance so obvious but why the heck do you build dams ? water and flood control right ? she's closed , no water . she's gonna open soon 'cause of the big melt. oh, oh too much water , closed again . it's 12 km 's long , that's a fair size to fill and empty over night, no? i've watched this lake off and on over the winter . it's weird. guelph has been closed all season due to low water . a dam regulates water levels according to safe guidelines previously determined. speed up the response times . keep a closer eye on things guys.... probably not that simple,,,,,,,,,,,, but i feel better.
