A free preview for WFN was on until August 24th. If you subscribed, then I have no clue. Good luck contacting customer service. Cheers.

US To Approve Genetically-Altered Salmon For Fish Farming?
adempsey replied to craigdritchie's topic in General Discussion
Complete failure by the FDA IMO. It sounds like the application had a lot of bad science in it as well. These fish will get into the wild. There is no doubt about it. Some will be fertile as well. Perhaps it's not that much different than stocking hybrids. I don't know. It just seems very irresponsible to me. -
I put some pink fluorocarbon on my daughters reel. I'll let you know how it works out next week. I don't completely understand the point of a colored fluorocarbon, but I got it very cheap (I wonder why? lol). I am of the opinion that it probably only matters with fish that get easily spooked.

At some point in the past lobster was considered "peasant" food too. I think for me it's more about when and where you catch it, not what you catch. I'll try almost anything once.

Looks like a spreader to me. Just tie a hook on each end and bait them, and tie the end with the weight to the main line. I suppose you could troll two lines with it. I've used spreaders shore fishing and ice fishing. However, not sure why the lead weight slides down. Looking at it some more I suppose you could tie the main line to one end and the leader to the other and use it like a bouncer.

I think you'll be totally fine. I book last minute all the time and there is always somewhere to go. Especially in your neighborhood. Although, you might need to drive a bit further to get something for sure. Any of the resorts on Pigeon/Chemong/Buckhorn lake should be similar and totally fine for a bunch of guys. I thought Camp Fisherman and Pigeon Lake Resort were acceptable enough places. There are numerous places to stay on Rice Lake as well. I am going to Muskie Bay next week and I think they had some openings labor day weekend. I also really like to fish Jack Lake (near Apsley). I think there is only one resort on the lake - Jack's Lake Lodge If it were me, I'd probably also consider some places on Chandos, Stoney and Kasshabog as well. Use this wizard to help you out: http://www.noto.ca/buildatrip.html More info on this site as well: http://www.kawarthaanglers.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11 If those don't work out for you and you need to look further north, here are some listings in the Haliburton Highlands http://www.haliburton-tourism.com/resort_directory.html http://www.haliburtonholidays.com/directory.asp?dirlevel=Service&category=Accommodation&service=Housekeeping+Cottages&fullsearch=&ttd= Good luck!

The Mojo bass rods only come in baitcasting models (edit: I am wrong, I just checked and they do have four spinning rod models.). I didn't see much in the terms of deals at the spring shows. I bought a St.Croix rod, but it was the same price as in the store (they have good prices though). I think BPS had some better deals at their spring sale.

If it were me, new I would go for a Shimano Symetre and a St.Croix Premiere. Naturally, I would wait until a sale was on if I could. I would consider a Daiwa or Pflueger reel as well if on sale. The new Shimano Caenan baitcasting reel might be worth a look if you're avoiding baitcasting due to the price. Also, the St.Croix rods that are not made in the USA are actually made in Mexico (Triumph, Mojo, Imperial, Rio Santo) not China, according to their website anyway.

How many of you actually eat your catches?
adempsey replied to shimano25's topic in General Discussion
If I am away for a week we'll have 0-3 fish dinners. If it's a weekender, maybe 1 dinner but possibly none. If it's a day trip, most likely none. Ice fishing I will keep 1 or 2 whitefish or trout the entire season. I think walleye, pike, perch and/or crappie make decent table fare. I only keep bass if there isn't enough of the others. Ling, catfish, splake, other trout are also fair game, but I don't often fish for these. -
Family Fun In N/W Quebec ~ Plus A Backlake Bonanza With HTHM
adempsey replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like you had a great trip. I'll be heading out for my family trip next week, but unfortunately my wife isn't as understanding as yours so I cannot go too far from the concrete jungle but at least it's on a lake. I was also up near Timmins on Lake Ivanhoe for a week of fishing last week when that nasty weather and cold front came in. Needless to say, my fishing trip was more like a solitaire tournament. -
Cottage rentals in Lindsay/Peterborough area
adempsey replied to scugpg's topic in General Discussion
I'm partial to fishing on Pigeon/Chemong/Buckhorn and Jack Lakes (near Apsley). IMO, the various cottage resorts on Pigeon are all very similar. I believe there is only one resort on Jack Lake, but a lot of private cottages can be rented. Since you own a boat, if it were me I would be going the private cottage route (search the net there are a lot of sites for this). For me, my fall trip is usually French River (just throwing that out there). -
I have never called it as I have never thought I needed to. I think the worse thing I have witnessed is people obviously fishing for OOS bass. How can anyone really prove that though? I think anything we can do to help out the fisheries is a good idea. However, on the flip side I think it's a resource that has to be used wisely else it will just become useless.

If you can hold off, this new Mark-5X DSI Portable unit from Lowrance looks nice: http://radioworld.ca/product_info.php?cPath=3_205&products_id=8005. Probably worth a look anyway.

IMO the pole models aren't as good as they use AA batteries and you cannot keep them in the water when you are moving. The portable unit I have also has side scan. Personally, I don't use my sonar to find fish but to locate structure. The only thing I have used that works for finding fish is my flasher. Never had much faith in the lower end sonar units for finding fish. Maybe I just don't know how to use them. Cheers.

I don't even understand his story. Six in the freezer, one in the live well, only one over the limit, what??? Anyway, doesn't matter to me really. He broke the law, got caught and fined. End of story as far as I am concerned.
-
I'd rather not fish without a depth finder. I could probably get by with my handheld GPS though (well, as long as I have the bathy map of the lake). If you ever go ice fishing, then it's an even better purchase for you. I'd stay away from the units that have the telescoping pole - there are much better in that price range.
-
It would be nice to hear how you do. I was very close to booking a trip there next week at Martins Camp, but we decided to head further north. Anyway, those lakes sound like a decent fishery. I read Stormy has better fishing, but I really have no clue. Best of luck to you!

Well, managed to find an old website for Air Foleyet. The rates are for 1999, lol, so not sure if this is the current site or if it's still in operation. Although, I came across a personal trip report/blog from this year, so I know someone is running that outpost. http://reocities.com/yosemite/forest/5502/index.html I fired off an email, so we'll see what happens.

I stumbled across this interesting looking outpost on Pine Lake called "The Chutes" owned by Gosenda Lodge out of Foleyet Ontario on the internet. It looked like they used Air Foleyet for the flight service. Pine Lake is on the Nemegosenda river system north of Frog Lake. I have not seen anyone discuss this outfitter. Anyone know anything about it? Thanks. Note: These pictures were taken from here http://www.ohiogamefishing.com/community/showthread.php?t=75208 and here http://thechutes09.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html.

I have a Tite-Lok system and I have to say I probably should have gone with the hockey stick/C-clamp. Not worth it IMO.

My brother purchased a newer Clarus 2-piece medium action 6'6" spinning rod earlier in the year for our trip in June. My father was using it in the boat, hooked a small pike that went berserk at the boat and took a quick, sharp dive down...and then SNAP!!!!. The rod broke right in half. My father though it was pretty funny, my brother, not so much. I also have an older Clarus that I haven't had any problems with.
-
Great photos! Ever since your ice fishing reports I have always wanted to head up there. Glad to hear that outpost has a new owner too! Based on what I read i the past, I would have never gone before. Thanks for the great report.

Try the trip builder at NOTO - http://www.noto.ca/BuildaTrip.cfm I'd also say that Elmhirst Resort will fit your requirements. I think it's overpriced, but it's one of the only cottage resorts my wife will go with me.

Trophy Walleye Of The Chapleau Game Preserve
adempsey replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Amazing. I'd say that's actually better than a fly-in! Thanks for sharing.
