  1. That video clip reminds me of the fishing documentary "Eastern Rises". They were using mouse flies as well.
  2. I use Fireline and PP Ice on my "deep water" rods. Really like the superlines for this. I don't have a hut and do get ice build up when it's cold out. I haven't found a line yet that doesn't end up getting ice formation on it. I even used line conditioner last season, it may have helped but did not prevent ice formation. As mentioned, it's more of a nuisance than anything else - far worse on the rod guides than the line though. If you have a hut, it's not a problem at all (well, at last not where I fish - maybe in Yellowknife!).
  3. Whatever is on sale. I use PowerPro, Sufix 832 and Fireline. My brother likes Spiderwire Braid.
  4. I don't own any form of transportation with the exception of my two legs and a plastic sled to hold my gear. I primarily fish Simcoe for whitefish/trout and typically have to walk out up to 3km to reach 80+ FOW. Some years we do amazingly well, other years not as well as those that can travel much further out and quickly move to new locations. So, you don't NEED the transportation to be successful by any means, but it's really NICE to have. IMO, a floater suit and a sonar/flasher are far more important than an ATV/sled unless you have difficult making the trek on foot. I've also considered some type of mountain bike, or a three wheel bike, with studded tires. I don't see why it wouldn't work, but it would be tough going on some days.
  5. Nothing really wrong with either IMO, but they address different markets. St. Croix is a more premium brand and serves the mid-range ($80-$200) and high-end markets (>$200). The lower priced products are assembled in Mexico, but the rest are from the USA. Fenwick used to be a premium brand, but was bought out by Pure Fishing and they moved production to China [AFAIK anyway]. They primarily serve the low and mid-range market (<$150). Of course, there is some overlap between the product lines based on price. However, does Fenwick use the same quality blanks and other components as St. Croix in those products? Maybe in some cases, but I'd guess they probably don't for the most part. So, personally I'd go with St. Croix if I was looking for a rod in the mid-range price point.
  6. It's probably a combination of all those things. Insect larva rise from the lake mud bottoms to feed on zooplankton at night. Smaller fish eat the larva. Bigger fish come to eat the smaller fish. You come to catch the biggest fish. Cycle complete
  7. Can you actually use the phones/tablets as a "GPS" on the water? Obviously the plug-in USB GPS is good, but aren't you severely limited with the cell phones/3G based stuff? I have Navionics on my cell phone, but never actually tried it on the water. Personally, I'd have a real GPS just for safety reasons.
  8. Woops, my mistake. Yes, I mixed up the Slammer with the Quickdraw.
  9. Never used one, but they've been around a while. The Simcoe board seemed spammed with respect to the Slammer by a couple of users last season, so I'd imagine you can find them in the tackle shops in that area.
  10. I'd just order online. I've ordered from Lurepartsonlineand Luremaking.com with no issues. Probably a lot on eBay too. Otherwise, you can get various parts at the big tackle shops. Of the smaller shops, I know Angling Specialties carries a lot components.
  11. Muskie Bay Resort on Rice Lake. Great boats and prices. Rented boats from here many times for day trips. Although, I do feel that the fishing is probably better on Pigeon and Buckhorn though.
  12. Lol, nevermind. I guess in this case they do require it! Kudos to John Wilkinson!!
  13. This has been in the news on and off for a couple of years now. If I recall correctly for a quarry, no environmental assessment is required.
  14. Great little reels. My brother has had his forever. Not sure what type of quick fire that is ("auto reposition" or not), but it can be a nice feature. Harder to find reels with that nowadays.
  15. I recently had a fishing weekender on the Upper French River and stayed at Bryer Lodge. The French River is probably one of the nicer places to cottage/fish within a 4 hour drive of GTA. I have only fished it in the Fall though, so not entirely sure what it's like in the Summer months. Our cottage at Bryer Lodge was one of the nicest I have stayed at for a fishing trip. There are plenty of other lodges in the Lower and Upper French as well that are probably just as nice as well. For our fall trip next year I think we are going to fish the Lower French and try to book accommodations at Flat Rapids Camp.
  16. I can get Arctic Char from the fishmonger (tastes similar to Rainbow Trout IMO - never had it fresh caught though). Never seen Grayling for sale before. So, it's possibly more "unique" or I just never came across it. BTW, why not both??
  17. Sorry, I should have been more clear. They are still on sale, but just not at the price they were last week ($100 for the parka and $90 for the bibs).
  18. Looks like it's over now. They had some "hot deal" 4 day sale where they were 50-60% off (or something close), and then for some reason went on sale again not long after for another 4 days at an even lower price. Call them up and see if you can get the sale price. Just say your web order messed up or something
  19. Looks like it was a really nice trip! Not sure I could handle it being so short though. Thanks for posting the report.
  20. I read a lot mixed reviews about Sears when I was researching places to purchase a new furnace. I was still apprehensive based on some of the negative reviews I read, but ended up going with them because the price was lower by at least $1000 compared to three other places I contacted and customer service at the front end was good. Hopefully I won't need service for 10+ years. Still trying to decide if I should get a Craftsman snow blower or not.....
  21. You might be able to find a Shimano Compre or Clarus on clearance within that price range. Those rods were on clearance in most stores because the new models are coming out.
  22. Also getting a $25 gift card after I made the call. Tried emailing CS, but that didn't get me very far. Of course, now that I have a gift card it will most likely end up costing me more at the end of the day than if I just sucked it up, lol!!
  23. For me: Merchandise = $214.98 ($115 for the parka, $100 for the bib) - note: the sale was continued and the parkas are now $100 and the bibs are $90. Fee = $3.50 Postage = $19.95 Tax = $74.27 ORDER TOTAL = $312.70 Looks liked I paid more than I should have, but still a good deal IMO.
  24. I am so getting one of those! Was considering a camera for a while, but the cost and the bulk of it has turned me away several times. Not anymore, that little camera is awesome and perfect for what I wanted to use it for!! Too bad it's not a 100' cable though.
  25. Wow, nice fish and photos!
