So COVID-19 is a bullet and is hitting every country differently. We are faring reasonably well so far hence the expression "dodged a bullet so far" which fits fine for me. Fishing isn't banned here and I'm not paranoid. I simply said I was fishing locally where there will be no other anglers. If you're from Ohio you have really have no idea about the Ganny. Fishing shoulder to shoulder is not an exaggeration.

Some things I wonder about the COVID-19 pandemic
Dutch01 replied to MJIG's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
Air pollution is a huge contributing factor for asthma. You did the right thing heading for the country. I saw a video the other day (can't remember where) that said living in a city with high levels of air pollution qualifies as a "pre-existing condition" with regard to COVID-19. -

Thanks - I'm normally careful.about understanding the sources I reference. For this link it's really just a short definition which I was satisfied with after reading it. I didn't vet the rest of the site so buyer beware 😂 -

I read the definition of cytokine storm provided in the link before posting it. It is accurate, up to you if you want to read it or not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
Some things I wonder about the COVID-19 pandemic
Dutch01 replied to MJIG's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
I have read numbers from 50 - 80% on ventilators die. I think that number will come down because I am hearing about more positive outcomes when ventilated patients are flipped to their stomachs. Time will tell. @MJIG it's my understanding that in the true absence of any underlying health conditions, otherwise healthy patients who have negative outcomes are suffering from an immune reaction called a "cytokine storm". There is still a lot to learn about this virus so take that with a grain of salt until confirmed. A quick read on cytokine storms: https://www.newscientist.com/term/cytokine-storm/ -
T-bone, I wasn't trying to "bash" anyone, and of course no person (or country) is responsible for the virus. Pandemics are natural occurrences. I was stating my opinion on the job performance of a politician in response to it. I understand you may have a different opinion and you are fully entitled to it. I was not trying to blame the American people for there being COVID-19 cases in Canada. Sorry if my post gave you that impression.

Thanks man. I can understand why you're treading lightly. I'm trying too but also I don't think my post should be a problem other than expected difference of opinion. I actually tried on this one lol I didn't call Trump or Republicans or Americans or anyone on this board any names. Everything in my post is a verifiable fact or quote. And the video isn't dubbed over. That's actually him speaking. so hopefully I'm treading lightly(ish) too! I'm cautiously optimistic we're going to escape the worst of this thing but it's still a little early to tell. I think warm spring weather is going to present a challenge for people who've been inside for weeks. My fingers are crossed.

I still urge people to minimize their travel and exposure to people, and to take this virus very seriously. IF we dodge the bullet that is hitting the US and other countries right now I think it will be because of the degree that we were compliant with all recommendations. In fairness though there's nothing in your comment I can really disagree with. The law is the law. Some will do more than the min and some won't and it's hard to call anyone wrong if they haven't broken the law. I have been out of my house twice in the last two weeks, but I will be fishing trout opener, alone. I can hear the laughing now 😂 I will actually be alone because I have a trout creek in my actual backyard, and another good spot a 10 minute walk. In 5 years fishing them I've never seen another angler. I do think Akri is right about the shoot show at places like the Ganny. Based on what I've seen there in the past I can't imagine that lot can behave themselves and they just might wreck it for the rest of us.

I'm not an epidemiologist (or a medical anything at all tbh!) so I'll be the first to admit if I'm wrong on this one...but as I understand it, if you recover from the virus and have antibodies in your blood, then you shouldn't be able to be reinfected by the same virus. This the premise on which vaccines work. However, there is something called antigenic drift in play too. The flu virus is a very fast mutating virus (high antigenic drift) that's why you need a new vaccine every year and it covers as many strains as they can include. I hope SARS-CoV-2 is not like the flu in this way, because if so a successful vaccine is less likely.

I was gonna crack wise about your top speed and then I realized I better not, you might be faster than me!

The WHO is not without problems, but it is a well oiled machine compared to the Trump administration now trying to blame them. Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme: "In the first weeks of January, the WHO was very, very clear. We alerted the world on January the 5th. Systems around the world, including the U.S., began to activate their incident management systems on January the 6th. And through the next number of weeks, we've produced multiple updates to countries, including briefing multiple governments, multiple scientists around the world, on the developing situation — and that is what it was, a developing situation." On January 23, the WHO issued a press release containing a mission summary of their site visit to Wuhan, which included the following statement: "Data collected through detailed epidemiological investigation and through the deployment of the new test kit nationally suggests that human-to-human transmission is taking place in Wuhan." On January 24 respected medical journal The Lancet published Chen Wang, Peter W Horby, Frederick G Hayden, George F Gao, "A NOVEL CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK OF GLOBAL HEALTH CONCERN". It warned of "human-to-human transmission," "the risk of much wider spread of the disease" and said "the time to act is now." Now let's look at what Trump was saying around the same time: January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.” February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.” February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.” February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.” February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.” February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.” February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.” And now, with 35,000 dead and climbing, Trump needs someone to blame. And he wants America to believe it was the WHO and not his own incompetence that put the USA where they are today. Here he is practicing his denials:

Sure is! The right kayak = awesome $700 Jon boat = 👎 A chacun son gout as the French would say. I would fish the bank before I'd spend $700 on a jon boat.
-
I wouldn't have wanted to be on Erie yesterday in any craft! For sure you have to pick your spots if heading out on big water in a kayak. But guys have been going out into the ocean catching huge fish out of kayaks (Hobie Outbacks) for decades.
-
Ohh I thought you meant a PA. The new Outback is just as badass. Your Tarpon is a lot like my old Pescador (in fact Wilderness Systems gave the old Tarpon molds to Perception if I remember correctly). You're in for a huge upgrade you're gonna love it.
-
You ordered a Hobie PA? 12 or 14? 180 or 360 drive? Don't leave a guy hanging now lol I'm rocking a 2018 Outback. My buddy has a PA12 (180) and it is amazing.
-
You can stand and fish all day long on the right kayak. Hell you could dance with a girl on a Hobie PA
-
Never Lol! Actually I may end up with both, my kayak is awesome for paddle in camping but it doesn't portage very well 😂
-
A 12' thinner is loud compared to my kayak. -An electric motor is loud. -The boat itself is loud. -tin boats are not known for comfortable bench seats. My Hobie seat has built in adjustable lumbar support. -a tin boat uses gas or a heavy battery to recharge if using electric -a tin boat requires registration and insurance (might be covered under home policy depends on insurer) -requires a trailer and a spot to keep it. I keep my Hobie inside my apartment. -Kayak needs no launch and I don't have to pay for parking most of the time as most municipal lots that I know only charge if you have a trailer -sitting in a tin boat is not the same as sitting inches off the water. I have been through creeks 4" deep to access back lakes I'm not trying to make anyone sell their boat. I am not a fan of the misconception that people who kayak fish do so cause they can't afford a boat. I can't tell you how many times I hear "why don't you just get a jon boat". I think that 12' jon boats suck, that's why! Lol (just an opinion not picking on anyone who has one!) I sold my boat cause the kayak is better (for me and what I want to be doing).

Definitely a FB thing. I'm not a gambler myself but these raffles are pretty popular, especially south of the border.

No worries G, happy to share my enthusiasm. Good luck in the raffle. The Catch 120 is a great kayak I'm sure you would be happy with it. I haven't paddled it but from what I understand is very stable. It's decently light too because it's thermoformed (most fishing kayaks are rotomolded). Pretty sure you can rent one from Freedom Kayak in Blackstock if you want to try one out.
-
Huh surprised they would leak if they're protected by a tough outer skin.
-
Can you use a internal bladder like an inner tube on a bike tire?
-
My analogy isn't perfect either because a $500 pelican or $1000 Jackson Bite will put you on fish, so you don't have to spend big to kayak fish. The point was that's it's not about dollars at all for me. I have the very tool I want, for what I want to do. It happens to be expensive to some, I paid $2,600 lightly used, but I never considered the money.

Believe it or not I'm serious! I had a great boat, 16' side console with a 40 Merc and a Terrova on the front. It just sat and collected dust once I fell for kayak fishing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's one of those things, you either love it or you don't like it. Those that love it are almost all die-hards, there's got to be a reason for that right? For me, it was about slowing down, simplifying, and focusing on the experience. It's also a lifestyle. I don't just fish from it, I do paddle (now pedal) in camping trips too. It's also great exercise. I lost 55 pounds in the last few years. I made other major lifestyle changes so kayaking doesn't get all the credit but paddling is fantastic for your core.

"why do you need a $2,000 camera when you can take pictures with a iphone?" "Why do you ride a $3,000 Miele bicycle when you could get a CCM for $250?" "Why do you have a $500 golf driver doesn't walmart sell golf clubs?" If you're not an enthusiast about something, you will likely not understand. It's not about the money. You could give me a $50,000 boat and I'd still choose the kayak every Saturday morning.
