Surprisingly, I haven’t been out much this fall for steelhead (probably only 4 trips or so since the middle of September ) – Salmon fishing in any form just doesn’t appeal to me much anymore. In my case, I do enjoy sharing artsy photos of pretty fish but I’ve mostly been fishing in low light conditions ... Not the greatest conditions for an auto-focus (and light duty flash) in a camera. Frozen Fire joined me on the trips. He offered to be my camera man as well as protect me from the growing population of rabid coyotes that live along those rivers...I know I can run back to the car faster than him in the dark – Especially when I spray bacon grease on his wading jacket

Yes this is true. There are very few cameras now over $120 that aren’t great in sunny, outdoor lighting. Low light on the other hand is the arch nemesis of all cameras. If you’re truly a pixel peeper, most P&S cameras aren’t that great in low light (indoors for example) – some are obviously better than others though. IMO judging by the images posted up on various fishing message boards, P&S cameras aren’t all that great underwater either (but they do make for some pretty awesome action shots if you ignore the graininess) – I am a pixel peeper. Up until last year, it seemed that most companies were quite content in trying to cram more and more megapixels onto the tiny sensors of the cameras. The end results were grainy, noisy images in low light conditions. They increased the possible resolution of the photograph (in case you decide to blow it up to print) at the expense to the overall image quality. Some companies like Canon are actually improving the image qualities of their cameras by down-shifting from 15.5mp (In their G10 prosumer P&S model) to the current 10mp in their current G12 model.

That web-site is so overrated I have river cams on EVERY river in Ontario with temperature and depth gauges . For a low price of $600,000 per year (because everyone knows I can't offer it at this price forever), I'll open up subscriptions to OFC members so that subscribers truly get real time video, pictures and data of the rivers before they leave home That web-site doesn't take into account ice build up, water clarity, the number of other anglers on the water or stocks of steelhead currently in the system (I also have underwater cams and digital laser fish counters at all the prime pools too) $600,000 is a 'steel' for what you get...This product and/or service is MJL approved

After spending a few years with my Panasonic FZ18 super zoom and borrowing my dad’s Nikon 40D for shooting product pics for the Whirlpool/Maytag company, I finally got a DSLR of my own. Picked up a very lightly used Canon 40D last weekend at a great price. For size comparison, The Canon 40D is huge compared to my FZ18 (which I already thought was big compared to Canon’s Rebel line). My dad got me a used lens at the Henry’s photography show on Friday when we went. Canon 50mm F/1.8 Mark 1 (the predecessor to the newer nifty fifty available today). It’s a ‘bokeh’ brown from this weekend that was mixed in with some steelhead. A picture that didn’t come out exactly as I had planned but the dreamy effect was pretty neat Definitely need to pick up a wider angled lens (possibly a 20mm prime or a standard zoom) as well as a few other accessories. Any recommendations for an all-round walk-around zoom for a decent price? Definitely excited to test out the 6fps burst mode on a jumping steelie in the coming weeks Cheers and all smiles Mike

I find AA batteries (rechargeable NiMH or non rechargeables) suck. They are very convenient in the fact that they are sold just about everywhere if yours run dead. Too many times during cold steelheading trips in late fall, winter and early spring have I found they couldn’t handle the temps and failed to turn on when I needed them. Sticking them in a shirt pocket or inner jacket pocket only led to major condensation buildup outside and inside the lens when it was time to take a picture. Sticking only the batteries into a jacket pocket and having to fiddle around with sticking them into a camera while battling a fish of a lifetime isn’t all that appealing to me. I spent the last 3yrs using cameras with lithium ion batteries and wouldn’t go back to AA's. Louis, I had a go with the Canon D10 last week at the Henry’s photography show last week...Looks kinda like a toy camera but the image quality is pretty good for a P&S. I believe it uses the same sensor as Canon’s other non-waterproof cameras. Colours are punchy (if you’re into that) and if I personally wasn’t heading towards getting an underwater housing for my DSLR, the Canon D10 would be my first choice. Before you sell your Pentax, have you tried playing around with the in-camera colour saturation levels (if any). Most cameras usually allow +/- 3 to 5 settings to suit the photographer's tastes. If the Leafs make the playoffs, I'll give up fast-food and red meat on fishing trips for a month or two The good Lord knows I don't ask for much! I may get excited if they're 25-0-0 ...In the meantime, I'll remain pessimistic (as always) about our chances. Too many times have I been disappointed with the Leafs after a great start to the season.

Looks very much like stinging nettle. I had a run in on my last trip out for resident trout when a couple fingers brushed against it. In my case, I was only uncomfortable for a couple minutes. I made sure to study the various plant species during the winter knowing full well I was going to be crawling around the trout streams on my hands and knees or worming my way on my belly. Poison ivy and stinging nettles suck.LOL

I can’t say I’ve ever lived through a hugely destructive storm. Mostly ones that are just inconvenient. In February or March of 2007 during a massive snow storm (The day of my 3rd yr Management exam), I was walking to the bus stop only to have a flying metal garbage can nail me in the back and knock me to the ground. The snow was blowing sideways and upwards. I got on the Finch bus at 1pm (for a 6:30pm exam)...I was still on the bus at 6pm due to insane amounts of traffic. Some of the Seneca students who boarded the bus along the way, had serious cases of BO . It took the bus 5hrs to drive from Kennedy & Finch to Leslie & Finch (Or 6.1km). Stupid Ryerson finally canceled classes at 6pm when all other universities and colleges in southern Ontario canceled theirs in the morning. I got off the bus and my dad and sister rescued me from the Asian plaza at Leslie & Finch...It took them an hour and a half to drive to me and it took an hour to get home through all the side streets. It didn’t help that I hadn’t eaten lunch (or dinner) and only had 11 cents in my pocket when I was at the plaza – I was beastly hungry.

But I don't fish for muskies...Only steelhead Because steelhead > muskies
