  1. Hey everyone. Looking for a bit of assistance. I have a Pflueger low profile baitaster that I want to clean and oil. Trouble is, I can't get the side off. It seems to be connected to the front piece somehow preventing me from removing it. There are only 3 screws to remove on this reel and they are all on the handle side. Been trying all afternoon and have not been able to crack it open. There is no indication on the front piece or the left side to indicate how to remove them. I assume they snap on somehow but I don't want to force anything. Not sure if this is the model or not but it has the #304 on the reel foot and the letters PFLP on it. It is a grey/silver 4 BB. A cheap reel but pretty good. There has to be a trick to opening it up. Anyone out there have any experience with this type? I haven't been able to find anything on the internet. Found some comments regarding other Pflueger reels stating that they are not made to be opened and serviced. That seems odd to me. Anyway, appreciate your time on this. Thanks. Larry
  2. Any bets there won't be a coaching change in Washington next year? He can get them to the playoffs but not past he first round.....!
  3. Has anyone had any experience upgrading the software on a Humminbird Matrix 97? I know they're older and not supported by Humminbird anymore (technology moves too fast), but they do have the latest upgrade available on their site with instructions on downloading. I tried to download using a SD card but have had no luck. I believe the model may be too old for this method. So, before I buy the recommended AS PC2 cable package from Humminbird, I was wondering if anyone has ever done the upgrade, how did it work out and did you see any significant changes? Larry
  4. I spent four and a half years in Masset on the Queen Charolotte Islands BC. Cohoe, springs, sea run steelhead, dolly vardon, cutthroat trout, red snapper, halibut, razor clams, dungeness crab, abalone. Used to get a $5 garbage bag of shrimp at the dock.
  5. A buddy of mine bought a wireless Motor Guide and had megga problems with it. Back and forth to the repair centre. Motor Guide has had major circuit board issues...all being made in China.
  6. My kids had a couple of those frogs when they were raising tropical fish. Interesting when small but they have a voracious appetite and as they get bigger (which is pretty quickly) they can tear up a tank in a heartbeat. Other than the fact they are eating machines which is neet to watch, I can't see any value in having them and they are hard to get rid of when you get tired of them destroying your tank setup.
  7. Big Red by Total Battery - This summer will be it's 8th season of use. I go all day on a 55lb Minkota. This battery has never ever let me down. One thing to think about using is Battery Rejuvinator when topping up your batteries.
  8. Quite the rig. With that 300 Yamaha, what do you think your top end will be?
  9. Remember seeing an article once where they replaced the centre hook with a drop down line of about a foot or so tipped with a minnow . Professed to be a perch slayer.
  10. Read about this problem on other sites. The most common suggestion is to let the battery warm up before you put it on charge.
  11. I was in Princess Auto yesterday and saw a great little woodstove perfect for a fishing hut. On legs, about 32" long and about twice as round than an paint can. I think it was $69.
  12. I have a Frabill portable. Was getting pretty scraped up. Mounted downhill skis on the runners. Found the downhill are heavier duty and wider than the cross country. Wax them up from time to time and they work great. I see them all the time in the garbage or you can get them at the Salvation Army stores.
  13. From the 2009-10 Guide to Eating Ontario Sportfish - page 10 Muskellunge: Consumption tables in this Guide do not provide advisories for muskellunge. To maintain healthy muskellunge populations, the Sport Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program encourages catch and release of this species as it generally cannot sustain heavy fishing pressure. If you do wish to keep a legal-sized muskellunge for consuption, it will likely have elevated mercury levels, and should not be consumed by women of child-bearing age and children under 15. Trophy-sized muskellunge usally have very high mercury levels and should not be consumed by anyone.
  14. I'd say pike, possibly musky, and musky. The second fish markings are common with muskies of that size. I've got photos that are a clone to that and they are not tigers. I don't think the third pic is a tiger either. Again, the markings are common. If it was a true tiger they would be very prominent. My opinion from my experience.
  15. Beats has a point. It kills me when I see a beautiful forested area with a development sign in the middle of it expounding on the virtues of living in "Pine Ridge" or 'Beautiful River View". Then when they develope it they bulldoze all the trees and limit the beautiful river view to a few big dollar homes. New developers keep putting high concentration housing on properties with no conservation considerations and the cities allow it. Tax dollars speak louder than vision or common sense. Up here in Ottawa we have the same deer problems, especially in the west end. Like someone mentioned earlier, a controlled hunt would be better than road kill and dead comuters. (sorry for the rant-it's a friday and too much coffee already)
  16. Like someone said earlier, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. The fish is a true 57" The tail was not pinched. They did lie the fish flat for the measurements. The trouble was they were in pitch dark, three and a half foot waves and getting blown up onto a shoal. They tried to take pics with the tape by the fish, etc but with the waves coming in over the back of the boat and the danger of being blown up on the rocks, they could not. Things got pretty hectic and dangerous and the concern was to get the fish back in the water as quickly as possible. No exageration on this one guys and gals. They deserve our congratulations and respect.
  17. There's plenty of room for all gods creatures...right next to the mashed potatoes!!
  18. Various sprays have been mentioned but has anyone tried Jigaloo? It's a dry silicone that wouldn't hurt line or equipment. I would think it would make it easy to blow or shake off any water adhering to the tip before it freezes and it would be easy enough to reapply througout the fishing day. Just an idea.
  19. Just shows he's no different than you or I. A regular guy who likes fishing but who happens to have his goofups on film. Think about some of the things you've done or have had happen to you. Ya just gotta laugh.
  20. There has been a lot of discussion regarding nets. In Muskies Canada we've gone through the whole gambit: boga type grips, gaffs, cradles, etc and have found that the new large 'pen' type nets like the Big Kahuna are the best for Muskie. You don't have to pay big bucks, but look for a net that is also fish friendly, meaning it doesn't have a bunch of knots and the mesh has been designed so it does minimal damage to the fishes fins. The old nylon green salmon type nets are OK if you're going to keep a fish, but they tend to cut up the fins pretty bad and scrape a lot of the protective slime off. My preference is I allways use one glove for the hand holding the fish. I keep the hand I'm unhooking with gloveless so that if the fish starts going nuclear, I don't get snagged up. Good bolt cutters (knipex) are a must for a quick release with minimal stress and damage to the fish. Add some sturdy long nose pliars and you're good to go. Catch and release with minimal time out of the water and, no vertical holds for big fish. See muskies canada Catch and Release Tips article: http://www.muskiescanada.ca/articles/2007_...elease_Tips.pdf Tight lines.
