Dick Swann, there was a lovely man. He was at the Toronto Sportsmen's Show at least once, and I think more than that, and he was happy to talk fishing with ANYBODY who dropped by, and to show off his noodle rods. I fished with John Slade (whom I knew) and Dick one year on the Saugeen for a day, what an educational experience that was! But he was not using a closed-face reel at the time, and if I had to guess it was probably a Zebco Cardinal 3............... Kind of like the Cardinal 4s the OP has for sale! Doug

Not all "Vacuum thingies" are created equal. I had one years ago and it was temperamental and the bags punctured easily in the freezer. I gave up on them and went to heavy duty ziplok bags. For my venison, I wrap portions in aluminum foil and put them in ziplok bags. No freezer burn, even after a year. But a buddy of mine has had a "Food Saver" brand vacuum sealer for years and has raved about it, so I bought one. It is a good piece of kit, but there is a learning curve to getting the right length of bag for what I am freezing.... I don't think I will use it for venison, bags are too expensive, but it has been good for other stuff and I am dead nuts certain it would be good for smoked fish. Doug

I had two of the Daiwa SS "Whisker" Tournament reels, both from Watson's Tackle House in Owen Sound. The first one came in a box with only Japanese written on it, no English, and it was closing in on $200, that was a LOT of money for a fishing reel at the time! Both mine completely wore out, but they were very high mileage reels........... So back to the OP and his stash of Cardinal 4's!!!!!!! Doug

They were "THE" steelheader's reel when I first started fishing for steelhead. In the era before centre pin reels and float rods.............

When we went, the biggest weight by far onboard was fuel. We camped at two locations, the second of which was a helipad enroute to Lukotse (however that is spelled). It was a long way back to the dock at YK!

Different lake, as I recall. And the East arm of Great Slave has AWESOME lake trout fishing, I was there a number of years ago. My biggest was 32 pounds, but my one buddy's big fish for the trip was 42 pounds, a real HOG. The guy holding that fish has a 54 inch chest............ Doug

A bit of extra ballast never hurts a boat's stability! 😉 Nice rig, Brian. I bought one of those a number of years ago and never even launched it. It was a good idea at the time, but I always ended up taking the Sylvan out fishing rather than haul fifty pounds in to a back lake.............. Doug

Unquestionably, fallfish as many have noted. The biggest of the three is a dandy. A fellow who used to belong to a fish and game club in which I was also a member fished for fallfish and ate them. He poached them in water and claimed the flesh was as sweet as trout. I did not try them. Doug

Picnic shoulder, skin on, often used this to bone out and make into sausages with venison etc but yes throw away the skin/rind. I did this cut one time for pulled pork and it was wayyyy too fatty for my taste - but I did not smoke it first - which would render a lot of that fat out. I am overdue to find a good pork butt and make some pulled pork!!! My wife is not a fan, so it doesn't happen very often, like every two years or so. 😉 Doug

Thanks Dave. I went a similar route for my hunt camp, except no 12 volt lights. I am not smart enough to have both 12 and 110 volt systems side by each. I have a big solar array through a charge controller to two massive 6 volt batteries, then out through an inverter to run the camp. When the solar has been drawn down, I have a small inverter genny to run lights etc, and a big one for power tools. I surely do enjoy being in the camp at night, with lights on and NOT listening to a generator!!! But in November and December, and a few guys with CPAP machines, the solar can't keep up, so we do run the small genny, with a LONG extension cord!
