  1. Having sold 100% of Mercury Marines seals and 60% of OMC's seals for many years the seals won't melt. The seals for the most part are either polyacrylic or nitrile rubber which are thermoset materials. They won't melt. Failure mode for the seals would be hardening, cracking or wear. I would expect them to out live the engine parts with no water for cooling and/or lubrication. While I don't think a short crank is a problem especially with the kill switch shut off I doubt that it is necessary in yout get the motor vertical and let it drain well.
  2. Dave, Two weeks ago we had dinner with a couple. She is a 15 year breast cancer survivor. Years ago the prognosis was dismal but today it is much better. Prayers for you all!
  3. If I had my cell phone MNR would be called and information complete with car description and license number. The rules are to protect the fishery for all and not to be applied selectively.
  4. If you are not an author of some type you should be, great story. I hope those PITA nuts got arrested and jailed with only meat on their menus. These people are completly out of control Free speach, bull, they want to impose their minority position on us all. I think you should have tied her to a chair until the police came.
  5. Go to www.bassfishingresource.com. In addition to the forum they have many articals. I've been bass fishing for over 60 years and I just don't have the time left to write it all down.
  6. If your neighbor is using them as bait in anothe3r body of waqter he is most likely breaking the law and worse could be introducing gobies to another body of water.
  7. Regardless of the reel you buy using a bait caster well is the result of setting up the reel properly and practice. Failure to do both will result in frustration. There are many places on-line to get set up advice and most reels have instructions with them. Once you get the reel set up practice at home; nothing worse than having the frustration of backlashes spoil a days fishing. When you are learning you will most likely get some snarls that you just can't untangle so you will need to cut the line off the reel and respool. So don't start with fluorocarbon or braid line unless you don't mind the cost. I would suggest a mono line in 10 to 17# that is soft. I use Berkley XS but there are many brands. Going to the light side of the pound test is better but I don't know where you fish or for what. Start by working on accuracy and as you develop skill ease up on the cast control and add distance. I think that centrifugal systems are a bit better but I like the flexibility of external adjustment. I have reels with either and one or two with combinations and they all work well. Having said that I have never met a reel I couldn't backlash but baitcasters are my preference except for 1/8 ounce and lighter lures and drop shotting. You will hear from many about the virtues of one brand or another this boils down to personal preference. I have reels from Daiwa, Shimano, Pflueger, Quantum, BPS and a few others; they all work well. They are also getting some age and I've not had a problem with any. A little cleaning every year or two, a drop of oil for the bearings, grease for the gears and little else. Practice, practice, practice!
  8. Call a Lawrance dealer. They probably have transducers in stock. Before I went to a TM with a built in transducer it seems I had to buy a new transducer every year or so. Banged too many rocks. When I came up to your loverly province I always had a replace4ment in the boat.
  9. Good points. I'll add my pet peeve. Fishing shows that hold the fish up for the camers while they go on and on about the lure, technique, lake or anything else. Put the fish in the water you can tell us all of that while the fish starts to recuperate. In-Fisherman is particuarly guilty as are many others.
  10. Several years ago we were going to meet friends at Manitoulin Island. We came through Tobermorey and were a bit early so in driving around we went across the bridge to the main land towards Espanola. As we crossed the bridge I looked down and the current looked like it was flowing west on one side of the bridge island and east on the other. We were low on gas so I stopped and as the guy was pumping my gas I asked him if I was crazy or what. He said nope. When he was a kid there were days they could go down current on one side of the bridge swim cross current to the other side and the go back the other direction riding the current. I asked why he said the only thing he had ever heard it was caused by wind and condition out on Huron south of Manitoulin.
  11. Never fished there at this time of year but here is my take. Smallmouth: My guess is the forage is more bait fish than crawdads in the fall. Rocky points, crank baits, jigs and trailers, soft plastics. Try surface early mornings later evenings deeper as the sun comes up and while it's still high. Offshore humps. Walleye: Both are very clear lakes unless you have low light conditions (clouds, rain, good chop, early morningor late evening expect them to be 25 or more feet deep. Lake trout: with out down riggers you are pretty well restricted to deep jigging with spoons or heavy jigs/sinkers with soft plastics. Threeway swivels should be effective but I don't think you can get them deep enough to troll for lakes. Smallie 21 pretty much right on.
  12. Works for me if I tighten the drag as far as possible before cranking the handle.
  13. Have you looked at all Mart deep cycle marine batteries? I'm in the states but I think about 2 years ago mine were about $85. They crapped out at just about 1 years and Wall Mart replaced ar no charge. In my opinion the 12 week warrantee is right besides useless.
  14. I have a 2005 Safari with the factory tow package. I pull a heavy bass boat that is about 3500 lbs. when loaded. My Safari pulls is like a dream . I do have surge brakes on my boat trailer. Based on the weight you gave I would think your Safari would be fine. When GM cam out with the Safari's and Astro vans they were a quick answer to the Chrysler Minivans and it was my under standing that they basically took a CK truck and put a box on it. The only thing wrong with the Sarari/Astro is that they are no more. I have had 4 in a row.
  15. No PFD's, large carp flying around. What a fool. I am sure I saw something in the past year that a person was killed when he/she was hit by one of those things with the boat moving at a good clip!
  16. I can't recall a time that I asked myself if I needed new batteries that I didn't. I usually get from 4 to 5 years out of mine. To extend battery life check the water levels often and charge after every use.
  17. I mounted one with just large hose clamps. I can't recall if I used 1 or 2 clamps because of the diameter of the motor. I did put a piece of wood between the transducer ears so I didn't deflect them too much.
  18. I've done it several ways inc luding the immerse in water. My favorite way now is to wrap each filet in cling wrap, keep as much air out as possible then store in a zip lock bag again keeping as much air out as possible. When I want to eat them I don't thaw slowly on the counter. I run cold water into the sink and throw the cling wrapped filet in the water. I cook as soon as the filet is thawed.
  19. The trip across thenorth side of Superior is absolutely beautiful. Enjoy!
  20. While I agree with you in principle there might be cause for not allowing fishing from marina property. If your lawyers and people are as prone to suits as they are here in the U.S.the marina could be put in financial duress if someone should fall from their property and suffer loss of life or serious injury. If it was my marina in the states I would be very hesitant to allow bank or pier fishing. Fishing from a boat would be a different matter.
  21. All I can do is say I'm sorry for the way you were treated. Every organization has some jerks and sadly you ran into some. They can do there job and still be polite. Some people when pressed into a job with a little clout have there hats blown apart by an over inflated ego. [irst let me state, that ever since I was a kid, I have been in awe of the US of A and fascinated by this country! Over my career, I have absolutely seen more of the United States than I have of Canada. That's quote name=Rattletrap2' date='16 May 2011 - 12:38 AM' timestamp='1305520694' post='583503] Okay, Just got in from another ordeal at the longest undefended border! Fjust the way it is. My occupation required me to partake in technical training that was almost always somewhere in the US. I was fortunate enough to come here a lot. Back at the end of March, I was given 2 days notice that I would be spending 10 weeks in Cleveland, Ohio. Now this ain't Palm Beach or anything, just another industrial city where a major manufacturer is located and has their training school. I love my job and am thankful to have the opportunity to be here and learn something new that will make me more valuable at home. The part I wasn't thrilled about, was that I didn't have time to get my home in order for me to be away this long. I already feel like a dolt for not being home when there is so much work to be done around the house this time of year. Fortunately, I have a very supportive and understanding Wife that has always supported me when I had to travel over the last 31 years. She never complains, but I sure don't like leaving her with all the work. The fun started on March 27th. Everyone says "just tell em' you are visiting friends". I say, no way! I am going there for legitimate reasons, I have nothing to hide, and I don't have so much as an outstanding parking ticket against me! Everything went relatively smoothly the first Sunday I crossed. I have a Passport like they want, and I had a letter to the company that I was going to. They let me through with only a few stupid questions! Don't get me wrong here, I am polite as can be and answer everything they ask. They didn't ask for any documentation or anything. I decided that I would make the 6 hour trip home every second week-end and even told the guard this. A few weeks later, I am heading back on a Sunday evening and the Guard says" No! I don't think you have any right to be coming down here for training. Why don't you get this at home? I explain that although the company has offices in Canada, that the training is only offered here. Well he does not like this and says I need a Visa to come down here. I said that i understood that I could not work in the US and that I was being paid by my employer at home. He tells me to hand him my keys and goes off to talk with someone else at another booth. He comes back and says again that I have no right to be doing what I'm doing and that I need to pull into the compound and go inside to speak with Immigration officers. They herd me like cattle into the building and interrogated me for 45 minutes to 1 hour! I again answered the same questions over and over, and listened to what they had to say. In the end, they said I needed to have a letter from my employer and the company that is offering the training. He tells me what the letter has to contain and sends me on my way. I then get yelled at by a female officer for not walking on the correct hatch marks back to my vehicle. No problem, just glad to be on my way! Oh, when they asked for any documentation, I told them I had it the first week, but did not have it with me. He says that every time i come here, I am knocking on the door and asking for permission to enter, and need to have it. I said okay and said I understood and would comply asap. I went home for Mothers Day last week and when i get back to the border Sunday night. I run into one of the guards that i had previously dealt with, but he had eventually let me go. He is all set to start into me about going in to speak with Immigration again, when i said that I was in there already and that a specific Immigration officer (I remembered his name) had told me to get these two letters and that was all I needed. He backs down and says Okay, go on through. Tonight, ( I had to go back home again this week for a graduation function) the guard says he couldn't read my plate and asks me if I know the numbers. No problem Sir, and I tell him. The camera flashed on my front plate like always. There is nothing obstructing either of my plates. He asks me if I come to the States a lot, and of course i explain everything again, and tell him that in 3 weeks iI will be finished and that I will go home once more on Memorial Day week-end.(I get to miss our Victoria Day long week-end!) He again asks me what my citizenship is? I thought perhaps that my Canadian passport and Ontario tags were a dead giveaway, but answer politely. I had already offered him my Passport and the two letters. He says great,, and takes them from me! He then tells me to put the vehicle in park, shut the engine off, step out of the vehicle and hand him the keys. The engine was already off, but I comply. A second guard escorts me inside after telling me to empty my pockets on the front seat. I asked for my wallet and he says you are not going anywhere near the vehicle again and to walk this way. He says the computer randomly selected me for a vehicle search. i am asked to sit in a room out of sight and they drove my car into a garage and searched it for about a 1/2 hour! He comes back inside and says that he saw my new PAL certificate in my wallet and is there any weapons in the car? I don't even own one yet! I politely tell him this and he gives me back my stuff and send me on my way! Sorry for the long winded rant, but I am thoroughly PO'd about this and the lustre is really starting to wear off this fine country that I admired so much!! I guess I was so naive that I thought they would be thankful I was coming down here to spend tens of thousands of dollars! After all this is done, I will have to come back to the US in August for two more weeks. I can hardly wait! I think I will just park my car, bend over and place my elbows on the hood, and let them all have a turn with me! I can't imagine trying to bring a boat load of fishing gear across the border! Do our guards treat all of our Southern friends this way when you come up here in June? Is this normal procedure? It is a sad state of affairs if this is what things are coming to with our closest allies and neighbours. I'm hoping someone on here has some inside knowledge of these matters and can shed some light for me! I'm an honest guy who plays by and follows the rules. What the heck do they do with criminals? Thanks (Maybe when the 3 gallons of coffee I drank to get me here wears off,I can get to sleep!) LOL
  22. Is your motor electric start? If so use that battery.
  23. When fly fishing you cast the line and the leader + fly just go along for the ride. The line should be sized to go with your rod. So if you have a 7 weight rod you get a 7 weight line. I personally prefer a weight forward line but I do cut of a foot or so of the forward part. Fly reels are nothing more than convient storage for the line and on ocassion a means of fighting the fish with the reel.
