  1. I use them most of the time except when I jerk troll Suicks.
  2. Unfortunatly reintroduction of Musky just wouldnt be that successfull in the Kawarthas. Musky there evolved without pike for competition and act just like pike in their spawning behavior. There are actually two kinds of musky identified by their behavior. They are lacustrine and riverine. Simcoe had riverine musky that they lost due to loss of spawning habitat(offshore shoals). The Kawarthas have lacustrine musky which spawn on flooded shallow weeds and grass the same as pike. The pike spawn before the musky and the young pike chow down on the newly born Musky. You could introduce the riverine variety but a lot of the lakes in the Kawarthas just wouldn't have suitable spawning grounds and would be doomed to failure. Bad news Im afraid.
  3. Congrats a happy occasion to welcome a new fishing buddy. Remember all the fishing you miss for the next couple of years will be more than made up for down the road.
  4. I keep a box of 5/0 and 6/0 trebles on board. I use my Beckman net as a liivewell and dont even try reversing the hooks out . I just use the bolt cutters and cut them off. Its not like I go through a box of hooks a day(although that would be awesome) I might have to do it 3 or 4 times on a good day.
  5. I dont know about around Toronto but have caught lots up north and they are delicious. Just but ugly and slimey. A species that people shoulld think about keeping for the table instead of a more sought after species.
  6. Yep we see them all the time in the French when we are musky fishing. Kinda cool that occasionally they get up that far. Makes me think about all the times I've seen steelhead in New Hamburg and think wow that fish has come a long way.
  7. Gerritt my heart goes out to you and your family. Be strong for them, they will be strong for you and together you will get through tommorow.
  8. I love fishing the waters in and around Conostoga Golf Coarse. Ive always caight lots of smallies in there.
  9. Wow musky fishing like that can only be dreamed about. Congrats on what looked like an amazing trip.
  10. If its before December 15, I suggest Upper Niagara River for Musky Fishing. Hire a guide get a nice hotel room got to the casino in the evening. Very nice romantic getaway plus gives the boyfriend time to fish. If its after Dec 15 same thing only lower Niagara for Steelhead and Lakers. Ice fishing if the weather is like last year will be a no go.
  11. Just thought I would share this story with everyone and hope it makes you shake your heads. My buddy and I are fishing a river in October for muskies. I see a bunch of minnows being busted over in a backwater that I have pulled skis out of before. I'm fishing a 8 " rouser glide bait with a 12 inch leader on 80 lb power pro. Two pulls into my retrieve slam-FISH ON!!! Hold it not quite the fight I'm expecting. The fish is making quick hard turns but doesnt have the power of a muskie. After a battle of about 45 seconds I boat this Always makes me laugh when I remember all the times I'd finesse down to 2 pound tippet and single eggs.
  12. IM also going to have to recommend the West Arm. Great Fishing and very under utilized.
  13. Nice fish to bad you couldnt have caught it on Saturday or Sunday though. Nice to see the Pic produce a nice fish. Im going to assume that no one caught anything bigger on the weekend.
  14. I dont have one favourite lure for all fish but definitely have a favourite for each species Smallmouth Bass-- Watermelon Pepper Yamamoto grub-split shot rigged Largemouth Bass-- Purple and Black Jig with Purple salt crawpork Pike--Safety pin style Spinnerbait depending on colour of water will determine the colour I use Walleye-- Worm Harness with live bait Brook Trout-- Brook Trout Parr coloured EGB spoon size #2 Lake Trout--Blue/silver Little cleo tipped with a salted minnow tail Musky--- I have the most fun fishing Pete Mania's DOC but I have the most confidence fishing a Sneaky Pete or any other bulger double bladed bucktail. Resident Brown Trout- if not flyfishing I would have to say a Panther Martin Nothing else I really fish for anymore but it is Salmon/Stellhead season so if I wasnt drift fishing roe or flyfishing I would have to say hot shoting skunk Quickfish/Flatfish always seemed to produce fish.
  15. They are absolutely crazy. I saw them doing this on In Fisherman years ago. Then one spring while doing musky sampling in the spring up at Moon River Basin in Georgian Bay we got a huge channel cat in the fyke net and couldn't get it out of the trap. Being a smart ass know it all I mentioned the technique and proceded to demonstrate. Catfish only have vomerine teeth but when 23 pounds of thrashing mad catfish clamps down and doesnt let go it freaking makes a mess of your hand in a hurry(think two piece of 80 grit sandpaper clamped down and thrahed around on your hand) My knuckles looked like hamburger after it was over. Lesson: Dont be a smart azz-dumbazz!!!!
  16. Exactly I at one time was a die hard steelheader. Would miss school, work, sex with the wife at the words Uncle Terry says be here tommorow. Right after I figured steelhead out to the point that I was never going fishless, I discovered Musky fishing. Now I go out in the fall right till the closer in Dec and If its a bad day I'll see another boat out on the lake and chances are their buddies. That being said I want to keep it that way so keep fishin the tribs y'all.
  17. IM a big Fundally fan for musky. I take the bait and change the angle of the lure though so it is 90 degrees instead of 45.
  18. Sharpen your hooks. Sharpen your hooks first thing when you wake up in the morning, sharpen your hooks on your lure before you start casting it, and sharpen your hooks everytime the lure hits bottom or gets snagged. Had a day in the Kawarthas where we went 1 for 14 the first day couldnt figure out why we couldnt boat the fish(My partner actually lost his temper after losing his 5th one and broke his rod over his knee) Went back to the cottage sharpened all our hooks and didnt lose a single fish over the next two days. It was a valueable lesson. Havent lost many fish since unless its been trolling but those are more like rips.
  19. Ive caught a few in my life. One time behind Preston Arena on the Grand while fishing a Pop-r I caught one and while he was fighting another one came down and tried to take the lure out of its mouth and I ended up catching two at once. It made it easier getting them in but much harder getting them off without getting pecked.
  20. Fantastic and creative report. I even recognize where you were My son has played on the ball diamond in the one picture. I always enjoy when he plays there so I can take a walk along the river.
  21. Public lauch in Haliburton, which is actually Head Lake(tons of fish under 36" in Head) Go south under bridge into Grass and Kash is South of that. Yes there is deep water forage but the fish are still Kawartha strain and dont put the girth on that Great Lakes strain Musky do.
  22. 8" tires suck balls. Twice ive had them go on me . Once on my snowmobile trailer and once on the boat trailer. They are just terrible for highway driving. Had to spend the night on the side of 11 when my boat tire went. Guy who repaired it in the morning recommended switching my trailer over to 12" and its been great ever since.
  23. Ive never actually fished that spot figured the access was just to easy. I do hawever stop there and walk in just to relax on many occasions.
