Wow Wayne, that was a rough start to the boating season for you! But just think, now that all of the bad luck is out of the way you should have a fantasic year of fishing. I believe the good luck is coming to balance off all the cr@p you had to endure! Good to hear you got into fish! (Or so you say, I'll have to see the pics to give the thumbs up! ) Don't cause yourself too much grief as it's not good for the health! Take care, Stan -
Happy Birthday Alex, now GET OUT THERE AND FIND A FISH FOR THE TOURNEY!!! Have a great one! HearingFish

Jiggy, I applaud your efforts , I hope the guys will get busted for poaching. But as many have said above, at least you made them think twice about doing again!

Hi All, I just wanted to know if there were any other OFNCers attending the Ducks Unlimited Dinner event in Richmond Hill tonight? I was a late invite but plan to be there. If you're there, please look for me and say "hello". I'm the 6 ft, a bit overweight Chinese Guy with the orange shirt in the mid 30's. Stan ** I hope I'm not pinning myself for some knocks!! Haha **

I'll have him in my thoughts and wish him a successful and speedy recovery!

I see 4 walleyes in the picture, one large female, a smaller (male) beside it, a smaller (male?) about 50% covered by the female's tale, and a fourth with it's head just poking through the top middle of the picture with it's right eye reflecting light. Cool pics Greg, thanks for the post, makes me wish I was out fishing instead of working. Stan

Thanks Guys, Looks like my fishing plans are off now, my travel plans have changed from flying in alone to driving in with the family. Thanks CH for the invite, I won't be there until late afternoon early evening. Stan

Hi All, Can another around Ottawa help me out? I was wondering if there is any fishing within a decent distance from the Ottawa Westin Hotel? I'm there for a conference later this week. I'm just trying to see if there is any reason for me to pack the rod for the trip. Likely for evening / night fishing. Thanks, HearingFish

Idea #1 I think it's time for dedicated anglers such as ourselves to approach bigger fishing entities to get their support to educate the younger anglers coming into the sport. NEXT YEAR help and volunteer to teach an one day course at the schools during Earth week (this week), it can work as many anglers are still waiting the opener, like this Saturday. It would be great to see some pros come out to the local schools provide some education, show off let kids see their boats, a fishing tank would be great too or having the school book a trip to a spawning fish river location with some MNR guys to let them see the Natural process of spawning and let the kids understand the importance of why poaching will hurt the future of the fish. This would all have to be done in a controlled and organized way in order to succeed, but it is possible. It may be my wishful thinking but it is up to us as angler to pass it on to the next generation. Idea#2 An easier method may be just to make up a free fishing game identifying the different species, allow different methods and locations to fish and have matching seasons, allow for choice to keep or release. Have a virtual CO drop by when fish are caught, heavy fines and penalties when OOS fish are kept. Let the kids play and then teach their parents! Stan

Wow Dave, you must be definitely feeling better! I wish I could go tommorrow, but I've got too many meetings. Good luck where ever you end up going, and DON'T fall again! Stan

Thanks for all the info so far, well it looks like I better start saving up for a center pin! Haha For now the spinning reel will have to be it, at least I'll still be able to cast spoons with the current set up on the notty. On the side, it looks like I should also put myself into a proper fly fishing course too! Tight lines and hope to see more posts after the opener! Stan

Hi everyone, I usually fish with a spinning reel on my longer float rod. Not sure if I should take the jump to the center pin as I target various species of fish throughout the year. I have an older fly reel that was part of a traveling kit combo fly/spinning (nothing fancy just something to take on long trips out of the country). My question: What are the differences between a fly reel and a float reel? And their advantages and/or disadvantages (other than their price)? I've seen and heard alot mentioning brands like Islander, Raven, and Okuma. None of which I have had the opportunity to handle. Thanks for any insight! Stan

OOS Bass, you are obligated to let it go. Trying to explain a dead OOS fish in your cooler will be a difficult sell to the CO. I believe this question (or a very similar one) was asked on the old board before. The best we can do is cut the line and hope the fish will survive.

I was noticing what Joey said too, man you must have tough skin on your fingers to lip a wally! WTG on the outing.

Hmmm, Cut bait, I didn't give it much thought until it was brought up. I don't know any channel cat spots, but seeing and knowing some anglers using suckers for pike in the holland river gets me thinking, how about a thin strips of cut bait trailer for pike/muskie on a spinner? Those are some great suggestions! I don't know about canning them, not my area of expertise. Those suckers better beware! Ha ha!

Hi all, I was scoping out a spot to fish for the opener next week and saw a bunch of white suckers amongst the 'bows I saw. I want to give the trout a hand with their survival so plan to keep the suckers in a pail when I land them. Question is, what's the best way (if there is one) to prepare a sucker? I'm thinking of filleting, soaking in brine water, send through the meat grinder and making fish meat balls. I figure, if they don't taste good , I may still be able to use it for bait (carp??). Any other recipes or suggestions? Stan

Hey Misfish, I just tried to call the MNR office in Aurora, I was left ringing the phone for customer service for 10 mins before I gave up. Called the MNR main line and was told to call the tips line. Geez, they make it more tedious to look for someone to call to get help. Can anyone PM me the CO's contact info for GTA / Ajax? Thanks, Stan

The past weekend, I went over to check on a popular spot on the Dufferin creek in Ajax and low and behold I see 6 people by the river three people (3 were kind of on watch out) fishing north of the CNR and 401! Mind you one was a young child with his mother and just toying around, but the other two had appropriate fishing gear for steelies. I calmly walk over without any fishing gear and point out the fact that "I believe this area isn't open yet for fishing, you have to be south of the CNR". I was brushed off and they continued to fish. I was disgusted by their attitude and left to check on the area that was legally fishable. Three anglers with only one mentioning hooking into two suckers. Sorry, for my rant, but now I know better and have added the MNR tip line to my cell phone should I ever come across more poachers! BTW from the MNR website the number is 1-877-847-7667 should anyone else not know it. They also suggest getting down as much info as possible, vehicle lic, description or photo, etc. Poachers beware!! Stan
