UF.......I've always wanted to try long point bay. I've heard the fidhing is incredible there. This just might be the right time. Irishfield....I fish the Grand near the mouth most summers. Typically targetting perch and walleye, but catching catfish and sheepshead most often. Perhaps if I target catfish and sheepshead, I just might boat some decent walleye Thanks

Well my wife, daughter and mother-in-law are off to Florida for the 1st week of April and without the usual responsibilites at home, I may actually get in some fishing. My original intent was to fish for perch off of Point Abino in the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie, but I'm told the ice may not be out. As an alternative I may have to stick to shore fishing Queenston or Port Dalhousie. Any suggestions? I'm sure regardless of where I end up, I'll just be happy to wet a line again.

This thread topic is one of the best I've seen in a long time. The stories posted thus far are incredible and if I had to pick one as my favourite, I don't think I could. I too have a hard time deciding which one of my memories I would like to relive. Back in May of '99 I spent a weekend on Hay Bay with 2 buddies. I had heard many great stories about fishing in the Quinte area, but this was my first time. We had very little success the first 2 days and we're becoming a little frustrated. On our last day there, early in the a.m we saw a boat come back to shore (Pickerel Park) with three walleye all between 6-9 lbs. The guy was a little reluctant to offer any advice but after speaking with him for a bit he informed us that we were wasting our time fishing during the day and if we really wanted an experience, follow him out at dusk that night to which we gladly accepted. We spent a couple of hours trolling the shoreline north of the cement plant casting body baits at the shore with nothing to show for it. Once dark set in, we could no longer see the shoreline that was just a few meters away. We had to listen to our baits to determine if they hit water or the rocks on shore. If the lack of fish in the boat wasn't bad enough, heavy rain set in for about an hour. Fortunately we had our rain gear. Eventually the rain stopped and we switched to flatlining. I was using a 5" perch pattern original Rapala. The fishfinder was marking a ton of bait fish in 4-5 feet of water while we trolled the shoreline. A huge dropoff was right next to the boat. All of a sudden my lure gets smashed and before I know it my rod is bent over under the boat. The fact that I was taken off guard was a combination of fishing in pitch darkness and being skunked for the past 3 days. After a great fight I boated my PB walleye (at the time). It weighed in at 6.2lbs and was the highlight of the weekend. I've since caught double digit walleye on Erie, but none have given me the thrill as this night time Quinte walleye. HG

If at home, I put the remains securely wrapped in the freezer until garbage night and then put them into the community provided "gree" bins that the city picks up for composting. Freezing keeps the garage and the neighbourhood from stinking.

I learned of this last week. Although I had only met him on a few occasssions, we had numerous friends in common. Saw him last fall and was surprised and disappointed to here he was ill.

Yes....my yellow lab got it in the face a few years ago. I tried tomato juice which only masked it. Then tried dog shampoo which helped a little. What really did the trick was a formula I found online. It was a combination of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a teaspoon of lemon dish detergent (mixed in a bowl and allowed to bubble). Apply to the dogs coat, let sit for 10 minutes and rinse. Got rid of the smell for the most part. Could only smell skunk if I stuck my nose in her fur. Wow! Those are some nice lookin perch and a wallleye to boot! I've said it before and will say it again. Lake Erie fishing has got to be the most under-rated in all of Ontario. Thanks for sharing Fishmaster.

Saw them 1st in 1990 at the 5th Anniversary bash for 97.7 HTZ FM at Courtcliffe Park in Carlisle (North of Flamborough). An all weekend mid-summer outdoor bash. Saw them again in 1994 at Molson Park in Barrie and somewhere in between saw them open for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens. They are a great live show. Would love to see them again.

Not much of a car enthusiast, but bought myself a '86 RS Camaro in 1990 as a gift to myself for graduating college. I put 300,000kms on it and had few mechanical problems.

Great post holdfast. I love the history of the war of 1812….having grown up in Niagara. Brock’s monument is still there and yes it appears he is giving the finger to our neighbours to the south. Actually, it is a sword he is holding. There is a winding cement staircase inside the monument you can climb that is extremely narrow and steep. When passing someone on the way down or up, you have to stop and hug the wall to make room. The 360 degree view from the top is incredible, miles of vineyards, the Lower Niagara where many OFC members fish… etc. It’s a stones throw from the Queenston launch. Laura Secord a local farmer’s wife played an important role in winning this battle. When the Americans were spotted crossing the river, she hiked several miles through forested areas to warn Brock. The Laura Secord House is also a stone’s throw from the Queenston boat launch.

I visited the Spring Fishing and Boat Show for the 1st time this year. A little small compared to the Sportsmen Show but I guess that is to be expected when you weed out all the non-outdoors related vendors. I picked up a 10.5' noodle rod which I intend to use for trout in the Lower Niagara and other rivers. Now I'm looking for a reel to use with it. I know a centrepin would be my best option, but what other alternatives are there? can I use a spinning reel and if so, should I be looking at something lightweight? Finally, if float fishing and bottom bouncing, can a braided line (Fireline?) be used? Thanks in advance for any advice. HG

The best I have ever tried are made in Hamilton at Springer's Meats near Parkdale and Burlington street but can be purchased at the deli counter at Fortino's. Available in mild and hot. I prefer the hot but have to limit myself to no more than 2 in a day otherwise there is a price to be paid.

I'm determined to get out more this year. In 2008 only got my boat on the water twice and fished neither time. In order to do so will mean a change in employers and that should happen any day now.

Are you implying that it comes with a trap door?

It's been far too long since I've been on here. Started a new job back in March that occupies way too much of my time. Very little time to check out the forum and even less time to fish. Back in February I wrote a post about my yellow lab Jesse. She had gone in for surgery on her left hind leg after a full blown cruciate tear. Unfortunately it was a little too late. Her other legs were not strong enough to support her long enough for the injury to heal and she had a terrible time walking ever since. Earlier this week we made the most difficult decision I have ever had to and today we took her in to be put down. Part of me realizes keeping her around longer would have been selfish. Part of me feels like I betrayed her. She was by far the most dosile and affectionate animal I had ever seen. She had to be at my side whenever I was home and followed me everywhere. While I was away she refused to eat. My wife would pick up our daughter to the school bus stop each day and all the kids would get off the bus, run past their parents and straight to Jesse. She would have been 10 next week. She was given to us at the age of 6 after being retired from retriever trial competitions. It was her intense training that made her so obedient but also led to her legs giving out. One day in July, I was wearing my chest waders and fishing for bass in a river near Georgian Bay. I was lucky enough to get 1 smallmouth that day. Jesse, however was able to retrieve 3 or 4 dead bass on the surface and bring them to shore. I have yet to live that down. I just felt the need to share. I've attached a picture.
