  1. I blame it on the Zebra Mussels...pick your poison... 1. Toxic Algae 2. Botulism
  2. Manitoubass hit the nail on the head. Treaty areas can extend beyond the boundaries of First Nations Reserves, and Ministry laws governing fish and wildlife do not extend to First Nations individuals within their treaty areas. This isn't anything new. Ontario First Nations Treaty Areas Map I don't agree with spearing any fish myself, but that's besides the point.
  3. Ditto! The 'tick' or of a deep water walleye or whitefish strike on a jig The boil of a bass inhaling a topwater frog The frothy explosion of a barracuda destroying a fast-retrieved topwater A Blue Marlin appearing out of nowhere and slashing a skipjack with it's bill like an expert swordsman before devouring it evaporating line of a reel on the initial run Panfish!....nuff said The violent strike of a salmon hitting a wire diver Trout smashing a spinner on the swing There is satisfaction in all species and techniques for sure.
  4. I have a pair of older Cannon Mag 15's and I love the auto-stop which works on conductivity, thus stopping the weight at the waterline. I have a pair of brand new walker tournament electrics sitting on a shelf, I haven't tried them yet as I don't think they are capable of lifting a 15lb weight? anyone know for sure? Also, not sure about the auto-stop, if any, on the Walkers...? Best parts availability goes to Walker or Scotty I'd say, have heard some stories of difficult parts replacement for Cannon or Big Jon. At the end of the day, they will all do the job, find a pair that fits your budget, nothing wrong with used either Tony
  5. ...Or just order from cabelas.com $199.99 and in-stock in the LH model and you get a free tournament jersey mail-in offer! http://www.cabelas.com/product/Quantum174-Smoke-Casting-Reel/847271.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dquantum%2Bsmoke%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=quantum+smoke&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products#productChart
  6. Just visited them yesterday
  7. How do companies expect to earn business with those types of timeframes? It's one thing dreaming about getting a boat, but when you've already ordered it and that is the timeframe? wow, that's harsh. Hope you get it sorted out, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the top brands. Yamaha has a good product, but these sorts of delays on motors and parts will start to erode that confidence in their product I would think...
  8. That's a great deal! I paid around $500 for my 31 Odyssey. The specs are better on the Odyssey, but wow, decent specs on the Deka Intimidator for that price! Can you get them around here anywhere? Is there Sams Club in Ontario?
  9. I've tried it as well, it was cheap at Costco. They also have Tilapia loins for around the same price, but WHY are the fish not farmed on our continent? It seems like so much of the store bought aquaculture originates from the far east, places like Indonesia and Vietnam...ugh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquaculture_in_Indonesia I have to think even large predatory fish out of the great lakes would be better (less or equally contaminated) then these fish coming from the other side of the world! Tilapia and to an extent catfish are a great sustainable food fish as they can be fed a primarily vegetarian diet. Dorado are also a good choice for saltwater fish as they grow rapidly and reproduce in great quantities.
  10. Sort of related, but wanted to add if you're looking for an extreme marine battery, check out Odyssey Batteries They are not the cheapest (in fact probably the most expensive!), but they're likely the best. I picked up the group 31 marine and it is rated at 1150 Cold Cranking Amps! It also weighs nearly 80lbs hehe Tony
  11. Nice work on the crappies, wish there was a better fishable population close to home here! Looks like fun. Great pictures as usual
  12. No retrieval strap, and no weight and float system on the bag rim that self-rights in the water. On deploy you have to wait for the drift control sock to fill with water and catch properly, and on retrieve you are fighting the bag until you can get it close enough to lean over and grab the loop at the bottom of the bag. The Cabelas version has a weights/floats built in and a strap that allows you to retrieve the bag easily without fighting it. I think the higher-end Drift Control socks have the weight/float feature and perhaps a retrieval strap but the price jumps significantly. I went through the same decision making process a couple years ago when I bought my boat
  13. Welcome, and I would suggest going the next size up than you think you need, it helps in gusty situations. These are the only brand I'd consider, very high quality and better priced than the top name brand. I own 2 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boating/Boating-Accessories/Drift-Socks-Marker-Buoys%7C/pc/104794380/c/104706180/sc/104308380/Cabelas-Advanced-Angler-Pro-Series-Drift-Socks/700074.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FN%3D1100596%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253BBRprd738047&WTz_l=SBC%3BBRprd738047%3Bcat104308380 Tony
  14. Yes for sure. Start.ca waives the installation fee of $50 if you have existing Cable Hi-Speed Internet actually. So my decision was based on the modem purchase fee pretty much equalling the $5 per month difference over the year, and being able to keep our @cogeco.ca emails for what little that worth is... This discounted price is only good for a year, so I will call again at the end of the term and cancel at that time if they intend to raise my monthly rate back up to $69.95 from $54.95, and switch to Start.ca at that time.
  15. Well it turns out Cogeco countered when I was about to cancel, and I'm going to save $15 per month now which brings it to almost the same price as Start.ca... Competition is a great thing! Thanks again for the info, the money saved will be used for boat gas this summer (well 2 or 3 squirts per month worth haha)
  16. You could certainly fish out of the pier, but I'd recommend you focus your efforts where the warmer water temperatures are now along the South Shore (and the majority of fish!). Anywhere from Grimsby east to the Niagara River will produce better results than in the Western Basin off Fishermans Pier right now. Spoons off the downriggers, and you could flatline or use planer boards to pull some diving crankbaits. I'd guess anywhere from 20-50fow and look for coloured water as opposed to crystal clear water...the fish will be less wary and more likely to hit. Good luck! and have fun learning the ropes with the new downrigger setup.
  17. Thank you Fish4Eyes!!! I know many people who have switched to TekSavvy and had positive experiences, but I couldn't get their service where I live in Burlington. Start.ca looks to be able to service my address! so I am just waiting on a confirmation email and if it's a go, this is a no brainer to switch. I'd be paying $10 less per month, and getting 125GB more than my current plan (300GB vs 175GB) I don't care about Cogeco's 'Up To' speed claims...it's all about the bandwidth allowance
  18. Thanks for the info on the other lines guys, will definately check them out when my bulk spools are done.
  19. I switched to this line a few years ago. I used to be a Berkley XL (Red Box) kind of guy, but not since I discovered P-Line Floroclear. I now use it for all my mono applications on spinning, casting and even on tip-ups for ice fishing. Cabelas usually has the 3000yd bulk spools on for around $60, even less when on sale, instead of our local prices of $14.99 for 300yds http://www.cabelas.com/product/P-Line-Floroclear-Fishing-Line-150-3000-Yards/743112.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dfloroclear%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=floroclear&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products#productChart Also, for anyone interested in a really tough/strong line suited for trolling the P-Line CXX has proven to me over the last 2 seasons it is up to the task for big angry Chinook Salmon on Lake O.
  20. Perfect start...big water trolling can get very complex quickly, if you let it. Try to keep it simple. I'd suggest using only both downriggers with lines set from 10-40 feet deep over 30-50 feet of water and keep an eye out for coloured/stained water. It holds fish better than clear water, and is possibly warmer. Location is everything with Salmon/Trout, and you'll do better where the fish are...right now that is from the Niagara River to Jordan or along the South Shore of the big lake. Temperature also plays a role, look for the warmest water you can find using tools on the web like this one All the spoons from Center to the right in the picture are more suitable for casting (can also troll, but not ideal) Stick to the rest of the spoons and play with depth, speed, and the distance of the spoon from the downrigger release behind the boat before worrying about colour. Generally the shallower you are fishing, the longer the lead behind the ball. I would start with one shorter, say 25 feet and another far back 75-100 feet. One last thing, this type of fishing will almost certainly ruin pretty much any other type of fishing available in fresh water...you've been warned, the addiction factor is pretty high! If you decide this is a new type of fishing you want to explore further, there is another great message board called spoonpullers.com that is worth checking out for trolling specific information. Tony
  21. I love my Cabelas Goretex Guidewear suit, and it appears they've redesigned them recently after listening to input from anglers. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Clothing/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Mens-Fishing-Clothing/Mens-Fishing-Clothing-Outerwear%7C/pc/104797080/c/104746680/sc/104329080/i/104170680/Cabelas-GORE-TEX-Guidewear-Parka-150-Regular/1316554.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fclothing-mens-casual-clothing-mens-fishing-clothing-mens-fishing-clothing-outerwear%2F_%2FN-1102594%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104170680%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104329080&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104329080%3Bcat104170680
  22. Ditto! No better auto-inflateable on the market. 35lbs of bouyancy ensures if you do fall in the drink and get k.o'd that your head will be high enough out of the water to breath air not water 5 year lifespan on the hydrostatic cartridge, and is about $75 to replace. Tony
  23. Guys, relax! let's not let anything get in the way of Jobs and Growth™ I think this belongs under the thread about things that make you shake your head?
  24. Thanks for the heads up on the Fishing World deal. I would have to echo that sentiment fishdawg, I stopped in there before my trip to the Bay of Quinte last fall, and let's just say I was blown away at the selection of one of my favorite stickbaits. I don't even want to tell you guys they sell them, so I can keep the stock all to myself haha. If you're wondering what lure it is, it's the Renosky Mirror Image stickbaits. I must have bought half the entire selection, some colours I had never even seen before They also work well for spring Kings, but with a hook upgrade (#4 Owner ST-41's) They've always had a good selection of trolling gear for the salmon guys, and that has remained, but the service has improved with the new owner for sure.
