  1. A car's engine on average, is likely only using 30 - 40% of available power. It's not to often you'll need/want to do a full throttle take off. Unless you're 16 and dad can't see you. LOL So yeah automotive manufacturers measures belt change intervals in mileage (approx 160K Klms) rather then time. Boat motor is likely using 80 - 90% of its power most times. We've all likely done this; at the end of a drift, we start the motor; barely let go of the key and we nail the throttle. Running half or better throttle in a chop and the prop comes out of the water. The tachometer pegs its needle; then the next second the prop is back in the water and drags the rpm down just as fast as they went up. In other words we beat the living crap out of boat motors. I'm surprised at how well they handle these beatings. So the harder we treat/beat on engines/motors the more frequent the service intervals. Dan.

  3. I'm sorry here guys but that's not the best advice. If the manufacturer says replace it; it would be foolish not to listen. Oh yes it does have a tensioner. https://www.amazon.com/Tensioner-Timing-Belt-Yamaha-75-115hp/dp/B01LXNR5IR/ref=pd_sim_263_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=W89TESZJGFDY6EXRGP9J&dpID=31yS71D28IL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=detail Like the old Fram filter commercial "you can pay me now or you can pay me later" and it's not just the cost of a belt change or the damage to the engine if it breaks. Its you being out on the lake (the opposite end of where you launched) and the belt decides to let go. A timing belt is a glorified rubber band; like anything made of rubber, it never stops curing getting dryer and rotting. Usually a timing belt doesn't break in two; but one of the teeth will rip off and like dominoes will rip off a number more. That bald spot on the belt comes to the small gear on the crankshaft and the cam(s) stop rotating. Crank has enough inertia that it'll make two or three more rotations. That's when the pistons come up and kiss any open valves. So go ahead and throw the dice and not replace the belt; I've seen SOME people win at craps. One last thing. If you guys think the cost is to much for this, wait till we follow suit with some European counties. 5 years old tires, regardless of remaining tread; must come off the road. For the exact reason as a stated above; rubber never stops curing. Dan.
  4. If a CO has the attitude, its going to get tossed out of court anyway, why bother; is my point. They and any other enforcement officer are there to enforce the regulations and the laws, set out by the courts; they are not there to enforce their opinion. So lay the charges to the full extent and then let the courts sort it. If the charges get thrown out, so be it. If the courts think these charges are so frivolous; change the laws. In the mean time the MNR, Police, MTO or whatever enforcement agency officers have to do their job the way the regulations are written. Dan.
  5. If a manufacturer is trying to squeeze out as much HP, at the most cost effective way; a timing belt will win out every time. I'm not saying its the best thing to ever happen in engine design; but it works well in so many ways. The biggest thing to the manufacturer is the cost to produce a belt driven cam, rather then a chain driven. The next thing is weight 5-6 lbs of chain, compared to maybe a few ounces of a belt. Right there a belt is free HP; easier to spin something light. The only downfall is the service intervals of a belt. Dan.
  6. We also have two thanksgiving meals. Last night with our good friends down at the trailer park in Normandale. Tomorrow at my son's house in Warwick. My daughter in law is expecting anytime now and she still wanted to do this big meal for all of us. I'm pretty sure she wants to stay active and hopefully bring on the baby? I'm over the moon, this will be my first grandchild and it's all I can do to wait for her to hand me the child for the first time. Talk about a thanksgiving present!!!!! Dan.
  7. Thank You everyone I now have the name. If someone knows what Cliff's last name is, could you please PM me? I want to send a donation in his wife's name to the heart & stroke foundation. I think I've found her odit; I just want to verify. Dan.
  8. Laugh but it works as well as any other attractants. Plus its a dual purpose item, ointment by night, fish bait by day. LOL Dan
  9. When did enforcement officers become judges? If the fish ifs fouled hooked it's fouled hooked; lay the charge and let a judge sort it out. Dan.
  10. That's great that he got one as young as he is and taught that releasing it is the right thing to do; good on you. I keep asking my wife when could we go visit her brother. She knows me all to well though; "you don't want to see him, you want to go fishing". He lives about 20 minutes from the Fraser River and there's all kinds of guides in his area that are set up for surgeon. One day I'll get there; maybe? Dan.
  11. Very sad indeed. Deepest Condolences. Dan.
  12. There's more crap going into the Northern lakes then just the fishers dropping their loads; when out in the boat. There's one lodge that I stayed at, where when someone flushed the toilet; you could see the toilet paper surfacing about 25 feet off the end of the dock. The water intake was about 50 feet upstream of the dock. LOL Dan.
  13. An update on the prop repair. Just opened the box that Citywide Prop Repair had sent the prop back to me in. The thing looks brand new; no signs of weld marks and the curvature of the blades all look exactly the same. Very happy with the way it turned out. $69 bucks taxes in. Welders here in town won't turn their welders on for less then a $100.00! Thanks to all that suggested having the prop repaired by Louie. Dan.
  14. Back in the sixties my dad would have kicked my ass if he saw me throw any form of garbage on the ground. So yes Sinker I agree with you 100% people need to learn this at home. My kids now in their early thirties and late twenties are more like my dad then I am; if I throw a cig butt on the ground I get frowned upon and scolded. LOL Dan.
  15. There's just not enough media for the general puplic to care or even know about what the MNR are trying to enforce. If it were law that every offender's name and offence were to be puplished on mainline media it would make more people realize how important it is to keep this resource safe. It would make people think twice if they knew their name and offence would be broadcast on the national news for all to see and hear. Humiliation hurts a lot more then a few bucks out of your pocket. Dan.
  16. Love this pic: looks like the light is coming from the cottage. MAYBE IT IS!!!!! Dan.
  17. Man thanks for all the replies to this thread. Its given me enough that I have found the set up I want. Arctic Armour. I just needed to get the cost past my wife and she's OK with it. It's only $600. for the two piece suit; that's only like three payments towards my life insurance. Then there`s no guarantee I still won't go down and not come back up; she`s got all the bases covered. All I have ever asked my wife is to wear a dark vial at my funeral. I don`t want anyone to see the smile on her face. thinking about the insurance payout. LOL Dan.
  18. My thinking is that if you paid 38 for a 10 year old vehicle and you only need to put 15 into; you're miles ahead of the game. What's 15 hundred these days when talking cars; nothing!!!!! Dan.
  19. If either of the guys in the boat are new to fishing; they've just been spoiled when I comes to normal fishing. LOL I can't remember the last time I could say I'm border catching walleye like that. Looked like a blast!!!! Dan.
  20. Yeah thanks guys, even more choices. LOL The Arctic Armor set does look good and one of the crappy tires here in town has a set; that I can try on. I agree that a one piece is likely warmer; but i spend half my time in the fish hut. A one piece is to much of a pain, having it half off as to not sweat to death. Thanks guys. Dan.
  21. I'm looking at a flotation two piece suit for this up coming ice fishing season. All my other gear left when my truck was stolen, last Feb. Hope all the seams rip open and the prick wearing it will freeze his balls of the brass monkey! "Some references say that the brass triangles that supported stacks of iron cannon-balls on sailing ships were called monkeys and that in cold weather the metal contracted, causing the balls to fall off." I have looked at the Mustang Classic coat and the bib pants. Contacted Angling Sports here in London and they suggest the Salus SC-1200 coat and the SP-1200 bib pants. Visually/cosmetically they both look close (not an issue) Mustang has a long standing track record for producing quality. I see that Crappy Tire use to sell Salus along with a few other distributors that no longer do? I want to be warm, safe (?) and not bound up in a suit. Any and all suggestion welcome. Dan.
  22. I'm sorry here but who gives a crap what this fish is! Its a fish that hasn't been in this area for a long time; let alone its size. Seeing a predator fish back in this area, means there's more food {Bait fish} available. How did they get here/there; no DAMS to stop them. Yeah I used to run my 14 footer up the river when the dam was still functioning. Lots of water all the way to the forks,. But it was still water lots of algae and if you did catch something it didn't look healthy. Leave the river alone and work around what it wants. Dan.
  23. Since the dam on the Thames here London has been out of commission more and more of the natural fish have been coming back. Here a link to a urban shore fisher that caught and released a 39 inch muskie. Leave the river alone and let it bring back all the fish that use its entire length. http://www.lfpress.com/2017/09/11/one-anglers-big-catch-stirs-more-dam-debate Yeah maybe the dam had its purpose, after the flooding that happened in the 50; but since then I hope we've learned not to build dwellings on flood plains? Dan.
  24. With all the electronics on today's vehicles I wouldn't touch one that has been submerged. Have you ever got your smart phone wet? I don't mean dunked but just rained on? Mine took 3 days in a bag of rice to start working somewhat normal. Now multiple that by that by at least 50 electronic modules on even the most basic vehicle. I'd only buy a watered down vehicle for its non electronic components. Dan.
  25. Very nice! You should feel proud of what you've accomplished so far. I've followed this thread since its beginning. Thanks for sharing. Dan.
