Musings and questions. Some fishing some nf.
Old Ironmaker replied to Acountdeleted's topic in General Discussion
I do know many years ago spearing and Bowfishing for Pike was legal. Not anymore, also the regs used to use the term coursefish but it is species specific as I read in the copy that Dave provided. A crossbow is considered a prohibited weapon in Ontario. I know that because a friend (former) was arrested and charged for bringing a prohibited weapon across the border into Ontario from New York. $500.00 fine and lost his privilege to go to the US for 10 years. I know that because it was my car he tried to sneak it across in. They were going to charge me but by the look on my face and me trying to get across the room to throttle him in Canada Customs they knew I did not have a clue he had it. One officer said he thought it was a toy. Over 700 feet per second ain't no toy the other OPP told him. I got grief every time I went across or came back for years after that. So I would check with someone before walking around TO with a bow and arrow. -
Dave, why do you care that multi million dollar contracts bother me? That's between me and my agent.

I agree Councillor. Fishing infomercials, the main reason I'm saving myself 2 bucks a month. I have been flicking the channel on from time to time this week and I have confirmed the reason why I no longer have it. Wild Fish Wild Places is on right now. There has been exactly 5 minutes of fishing in the last 15 minutes. I'm sure the Chamber of Commerce for the destinations pays them for plugging their communities. I did have some fun watching the Tarpon Tour thing the other day. It's demolition derby with $75000.00 boats in a small space. Now the Wild fish guys are in a bar drinking Pecan Punch.......ah man o man. -
It's great to hear some guys are right into the game. After reading this thread I think I might lift my embargo on baseball and try and get back into it. I do miss baseball. My 84 year old next door neighbour is the Jays #1 geriatric fan and she has always invited me to watch a game with her. I don't know if my wife will be jealous! Ha. She does not miss a single game they play. Are all the games televised? Do they have a MLB package? Her winter home is where the Jays have their camp, is it still Dunedin? As long as I don't hear about any 400 million dollar contracts I might be OK. Who is the highest paid ballplayer in the majors today? Lots of questions if I'm going to catch up.

It all stinks. Like I said earlier if the dropping of the charges was politically motivated, which many here believe it was, we are in deep feces. That is proof we have 2 tiered justice in Ontario. As far as not belonging on the reservation I'm sure some of those living on the rez believe non residents shouldn't be there either. I for one go to both 6 Nations as well as New Credit all the time and feel very comfortable doing so. When we first moved here that wasn't true, I believed what I heard about the rez. Now I'm going to say something very racist here and may take flack for it. The local kids there are more polite and courteous than any of the white trash I come across in downtown Hamilton begging on the street for loose change and cigarettes each and every time I go there. We do not go there to buy cheap gas and cheap smokes. It is our #1 choice for breakfast, lunches and occasionally dinner. We also love going to the track for the races and to watch hockey and lacrosse games. All the business people there welcome with open arms non residents money I guarantee that 100%. I won't hunt there that's for sure.

I don't want to know what he was saying. I know what it says to me. I lost my virginity while that song was playing on the turntable. No, not the entire track played throughout it. Just a few minutes I must admit.

A few years ago my brother that worked for Shaw told me reality shows aren't so real after all. Just when I'm just getting over the fact WWE wrestling is all made up. I made a lot of money betting on wrestling over the years. I do have to say that Wade has caught some pretty big fish, most of which are some strain of Catfish. Now if he catches a Yellow fin Tuna casting a spinning rod I'll be glued to the TV set.

Help appraising some older trolling gear I came across
Old Ironmaker replied to Bondar's topic in General Discussion
Buy low sell high, business 101. I'm not that old, just an old Ironmaker. But old is relative, to my 88 year old Dad and 84 year old Mom I'm still a baby. To Christopher K I'm pre historic. -
Need advice in regards to MTO and insurance
Old Ironmaker replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
You are dealing with the provincial gov. it's best to shrug your shoulders and go somewhere else. I want everyone applying for a OHIP card to have proof of citizenship. If not everyone that just "lives in Ontario" would be eligible for OHIP. So that is one rule I agree with, it might be a pain but it's a good rule. It's a good reason to have a valid Passport even if there are no plans to travel outside the country. Having a Passport saves a lot of hassle. -

The first time seeing this thread the reels didn't show. Rod and reel $40.00, I know that for a fact because that is what I paid at the swap meet, asking 75. I paid 10 each for the black cannon balls. Yes they are electric, my bad, sorry. $225.00 for the lot is fair, it all adds up. -
Hey M2B2 don't get yourself upset. There are BillM's everywhere. A critic without positive feedback. All you have to do is say something snarky and add LOL and all is well. I have known BillM his entire life, it's just his way.

Pikeslayer, at those prices we have all sorts of stuff for you to buy. There was many manuals for sale at the fishing swap meet in Hamilton a few Saturdays past for less than $50.00, my pal was looking for 1 to make a planner board set up with one. I don't know about the electrical downrigger though. -

Fishermans quotes are a bit higher than mine. The cannon balls go for $10.00 to $15.00 each and the nice fish shaped cannon balls 20 to 25 bucks. The manual downrigger with $30-$40. The rods $25.00 each. None of the stuff is really collectable, just used. The only guys that think long line trolling is boring are the ones sitting back watching someone else do all the searching for fish on the electronics, rigging, setting lines, retrieving planner boards, pulling in 12 colours of lead core, choosing and changing bait etc. etc.. I guarantee you it's not boring if you are doing all the work, especially with manual downriggers and planner boards. Come on out with me, you are most welcome anytime and if you still thinks it's boring I concede. When I was the passenger I thought it was boring as hell myself, I called it going for a boat ride. -
I won't be lipping any Walleye in the near future. Those teeth don't look round to me either because they are sharper than round.

I think any athlete would play on fair grass than great artificial turf. The artificial stuff has come a long way since first introduced in the 60's but grass will always be better for the body. Having said that some bad grass fields I've played on could be deadly. I'd rather play on asphalt than a clay based grass field full of divots.

It's no wonder there are more NF reports here than fishing reports. The kid is new and he gets blasted for mishandling the fish and talking too much time to take a picture. Going back to when I caught my first pike when Sir John A. was Prime Minister we used to club them on the noggin. They actually sold the Billy Club at CTC. Down in the states I've seen guys shoot them with a handgun, the same went for Musky. I met one old timer back in the 70's that shot a Musky while it was laying on the bottom of an aluminum tinny. You can guess what the result of that was. Things have changed for the better, but don't tell me that anyone that caught their first toothy critter handled it like a pro. I do agree that it is not necessary to take a pic of every fish you catch, we never took pictures unless they were all on a stringer. for many reasons. But I actually read somewhere on a forum, if there isn't a picture it was never caught. Bull. Pump, you just go and keep fishing and reporting back with your catches here. Experience is a lifetime of mistakes, wisdom is not repeating them. I remember reading something some where, " He who is without sin may he cast the first stone." By the way Pump, Pike can't get pregnant, that made me smile. Johnny D

We go exclusively for Pike on a small lake every 2 years in upper NY state. The early season go to lure there is a Husk Jerk with a burnt orange upper body. Rappala used to make a Husky Jerk floating lure, that was deadly. Jerk, wait, jerk, wait the jerk until it rose to the surface and bam, fish on. I love to use a top water in the shallow bays where they sit and rest post spawn. They are tired after spawning so slow and slower is the key for me. As soon as the water gets warmer go deeper for the big Mamas. Red has always been a go to colour for Northerns this time of year. Slow retrieve an old school Red Daredevil.

Can a bullet from that caliber weapon actually do that? Turtle Island news article I just read said the bullet travelled 375 meters, much further than 300 yards as first reported. The latest article in the Turtle Island newspaper reports nothing different than the Specs report of the dropping of charges. A little more in depth but nothing more than that.

Pic, I know you live close to 6 Nations and have an opinion concerning the goings on since 06' and the DCE fiasco as do I. But I don't think this is the time or place for rumor. I'm guilty of innuendo on page 1 here when I said he should not have had a gun that morning, I don't know that for certain. I did not see the latest Turtle Island news, do you have a link where we can read it. I have heard all the rumors concerning this shooting and some are plausible and some purely outlandish. I will not repeat them here because they are just that, rumor and speculation. I don't believe everything written in the Turtle Island newspaper, same as other newspapers, they all have an agenda but not as blatant as Turtle Islands. What Paquette said in the Spec article about a witness seeing a Deer that wasn't acting normal (and this is the best of ridiculous) it matched the description of the Deer that Jonathan claimed to shoot. How many descriptions of deer don't match others, it was a buck a doe or a fawn, that's it. Maybe missing a piece of the rack, maybe, can one see details from 300 yds? I think and pray politics did NOT play a role in the crowns decision not to prosecute. I would love to see all the evidence first hand. If it was a political decision we are doomed as a nation as it would prove beyond a reasonable doubt we have a 2 tier justice systemin this country.

James it's all weather dependant. My almost 20 foot deep V StarCraft with a wide beam can become a floating coffin if I get caught in 40K or less winds on any lake or river. We start looking at good marine weather reports the day before at least before heading out on any water. I have learned much about deep water in the last 20 years of living on the lake. For another thread.

I have watched a few World Series games since the strike and cancellation of the World Series. It was blasphemy to me to cancel a World Series. I was a seasons ticket holder when they were at the CNE and right up to the strike year. I couldn't name you 2 guys playing for my old team. Ask me if I miss the modern game, nope. Do I miss Baseball? Yep. It's just not the same game it was 25 years ago. To keep abreast of the game I just watch Ken Burns documentaries on PBS like yesterday when his latest series ran back to back all day.

You are very talented Rick. Anyone can cook a meal, not many can create one. Pudda? If the pic goes with the name it looks like Perogie, but on the plate it looks like mini Perogie. What's Pudda sir? I have a rule when it comes to food I eat, nothing blue. The blue in Blue cheese is really dark green, so I tell myself. If it is blue it's an exception to the rule.

Most of the low production quality shows aren't filmed in HD anyway. Now I remember why I cancelled WFN. Thanks for reminding me. The only show I ever liked was Lunkerville. The host Mike Avilla is a everyday fishing guy like some of us. Mike doesn't wear a shirt with a bunch of sponsors logos on it, he isn't very good at fishing and admits it. He doesn't edit out his backlashes. He asks the experts the questions some may think are stupid and would never ask for fear they look stupid. And he doesn't sell anything on his show like Cooper Tires and Rappala everything. I like Mike. -
Speil, I should have said I love Capon sandwiches, but I'll take a chicken sandwich too.

Speil, can you email some left overs? I like left over chicken better than turkey any day.
