  1. I expect to get 100,000 KM on them. Did yours last?
  2. Good deal. I shopped last spring and chose Cooper Discovery for the Silverado on sale. I was ready to take the road noise along with he deal. You can't hear them. I highly recommend them. I can't tell you how they handle in deep snow, we didn't have any snow here, not enough to shovel in fact, not once.
  3. I'll pipe in. I wonder if you need to buy a license and an Outdoors Card to walk your Dog? Now I will give you the point of view of a homeowner next to a fishing spot. I know a couple that built a beautiful home next to a creek that holds fish. It was opened for years. It was always private property. The County bought it and fenced it off. Everyone is blaming the home owners of complaining which they did not. Their home has been egged when they aren't there, it's a vacation home they paid huge for. I might have complained long ago, bon fires and hoppin and hollerin at all hours of the night, music blaring from their boom boxes and 600 watt car stereos. Hortons cups, Styrofoam worm containers, empty beer cans and bottles, I would have complained long ago. Cops chase them out and they are back the next weekend. It was never like that until 10 years or so. So now no one can fish there or launch a tinny like they have for hundreds of years.
  4. It's all about if the body is working well enough to get out. I never ever in my life thought I wouldn't be able to get out because the legs don't want you to, and refuse to co operate. Fishing was a relaxing day in years gone by. OK enough belly aching. The boat is ready to hit the water. The only thing not working is the VHF radio not transmitting but that's not stopping anyone. So I said to the boys at the shop today "Who's coming out with me?" Holy shimoly, it's Easter weekend, need to visit the kids and Grand kids, I have to rake the lawn, I would but my back is sore. I am starting to think that I am not a very good skipper. I called my brother and he says your on Bro, but only Tuesday, going to Vegas Wednesday so Tuesday it is. I'll report back.
  5. The place we used to stay at was sold and unfortunately they built a McMansion there on Clear Lake 3 years ago. It would have been perfect for you, and cheap too. I love the Kawartha's but don't get there enough. Enjoy your vacation with the boys. They will love it and love you for it. We had great trips when we were kids and went north. Veranda Beach or Puerto Backyarda, both on the north side of our house.
  6. That tells me you are a natural born leader. It was one of the questions I had when doing a job interview. "If your friends and yourself are planning a trip what is your role?" Simple question but the answer tells a lot. You would be surprised at some answers. Some people in this World don't have any friends, and one person actually said that.
  7. Stay away from that "As seen on TV" sealant crap. It doesn't work and is a pain to get it all out. The best way to repair it once and for all is to weld it. And buy extra material it is a Cracker after all. (sorry couldn't help myself) As far as buddies waiting for you to get "their" boat ready I would also suggest they find a nice spot on shore or get their butts over your place to help. When we first bought our summer cottage I rented it out a few times to guys at work. When one guy found out Barry and his family stayed for free he lost it. Barry rewired the place for me at zero charge, a weeks worth of hydro and water is a great deal to me. Everyone knew I was remodeling it, some offered help in exchange for food and beverage, many wanted to know when it would be ready. Tom S, you are bang on neighbour. The best seal would be on the pressure side. There is an extreme amount of hydrostatic pressure on the outside hull of a boat. In industry seal valves are installed where pressure is always on the side of the valve that forces it into the valve seat.
  8. I have Scotty rail mounts 1 on each side. It is flush to the gunnel rail and won't catch some very important body parts like the ones that stick up.
  9. I dislike looking at US prices for new vehicles including boats. Even adding 30% dealers here can't touch the prices. We'll go into the showroom when I need some parts and go down the line up pointing and saying "not in this lifetime, not in this lifetime, 649, Lotto Max, not in this lifetime." To replace my 19'6" Starcraft with what I have on her a new similar Crestliner with a 4 stroke comes in at around 45 thousand, not in this lifetime! Less room inside, in fact I like mine more.
  10. It's very difficult kuha. You have been here long enough to know someone will eventually get it locked no mater what. John, maybe they are going to walk there. Or it's "fake news" from CNN.
  11. Welcome aboard the board. Can't help with that specific area of the park, it's been years and when we went it was to go after Smallies and enjoy the park and it's sheer beauty. Camping to me now is a budget motel. Even if you don't get a fish it's worth the trip, everyone should go there at least once. Good luck.
  12. Looks like it's time to start watching the NHL. Now someone is going to say I'm not a "real" hockey fan. Wrong, I am one of those old fogies that remembers when the Leafs won the Holy Grail. Heck I could name each and every player on the Leafs and I was a Habitant fan there were only two ways to learn how. One game a week, every Saturday night on the original one and only Hockey Night In Canada with Foster Hewitt, I don't remember him having a side kick colour commentary guy and 2, reading a newspaper. When I have time I will tell you pups what a newspaper is. Ooops forgot the 3rd, listening to the radio. I could name every starting player in the entire league in 1967. There were 6 teams so it wasn't that difficult to do. When you heard Mr. Hewitt say " For all the hockey fans across Canada and Newfoundland welcome to Labatt's Hockey Night in Canada. Maybe it was "Molsons" hell I have trouble remembering where my car is at the I.G.A so give me a break. Regardless it was time for the best night of the week. Danny Galivan was the best play by play guy for me. His calls were legendary " Dryden was larcenous on that save, in rapier like fashion his gauntlet stymied Orr." We were lucky enough to see all these guys when they were in the OHL. The Old Barn on Barton St. in Hamilton hosted the Red Wings farm team and we snuck in every game we could. After the 1st period was over the back door was left unlocked by Mr. Schneider who was our neighbour a retired beat Cop and our school crossing guard. God bless him. He gave me a German Walther PPK and a shoulder holster for my grade 6 grad if I could get a B average, imagine that happening today? Wow. My Mom was fine with it after he removed the firing pin and kept the clip. I had it until the 80's when they were giving amnesty if you turned in your unregistered weapons.
  13. I wonder if Mr. Yangs fine is one of the 3 million in fines relating to fish and game that are so far unpaid. It has to be remember not all Asian Carp are the ones that are predicted to wipe out all the organics in our freshwater shed. They exist today in he Great Lakes watershed. The difference is those that are already here can not reproduce such as those waiting to breach the control systems in place. That's not to say the infertile Carp don't threaten our waters. If left unchecked even the sterile fish can wipe out all the vegetation if more are eventually allowed in. They predict if they breach the Great Lakes barriers in place in Chicago within 5 to 10 years they will be up as far as the NWT and north eastern Quebec. These fish are highly adaptable and basically produce more offspring by 100's of times more than our average sports fish, they just won't die, warm water or cold and can live with very little oxygen, hell they won't die out of water and can basically walk to where there is water when a body of water goes dry. There is a concerted effort to make Asian Carp marketable beyond the Asian community. They net them by the truck load in the Mississippi and Ohio rivers as well as others. Apparently they taste very good but for some reason we as North Americans have an aversion to eating Carp. I watched a documentary on them and they were fried up along with Cat Fish and another fish I can't recall and the average Joe chose the Asian Carp as the best. The Pain In The Ass people can kiss my rod, they are fighting the marketing of these fish, fish have feelings too ya know. I need to find that documentary, it was a wake up call for me and will be to anyone else that enjoys fishing our waters in Canada, actually scary stuff if it's 1/2 true. I need to know what our Feds contribute towards this project annually. If it isn't equitable I can see the US's point of view. We should be responsible for 1/2 the costs. Does anyone here know what are contribution is. I found it, The talking head PHD Doctor Suzuki narrated, fortunately he didn't author the piece. Please look beyond his rhetoric. http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episodes/carpe-diem-a-fishy-story
  14. Akri, you remind me of someone I was very close to 40 years ago. He always had plenty of time to get the vehicle ready before a road trip and before he knew it I was, I mean "he" was leaving in the morning before checking if there was a spare tire in the trunk well. Someone must have stolen the spare, and jack and tire iron along with his brain. A flat once cost me around $500.00 on the Mass Pike going to Boston for a game, not including body work in 77'. And the Jays lost.
  15. It is quite a haul for me to Mississauga. But if you can't get anyone else and will cover my gas I will take the ride and help you check the boat out. Lunch too!
  16. Thanks Chad for the info re: Copyright Infringement. If I was told that when I read rules of the site I wouldn't have done what I did. I as well missed 7 years of Law School. I don't know if our site states the explanation as well as you and Art did. I'll check, after all I am a stickler for any rules, oh yea, insert a cute wink, wink emoji here. I checked the rules and all it says and I copied word for word is; "Please do not post copyrighted material." I see posts with the entire article posted here many times. One reason I thought it was OK to do since I didn't know what copyright material is. I come from that generation that set the VCR to record and replay ball games and TV shows. I never heeded those warnings by Interpol and the FBI. You guys might want to elaborate on what I pasted from the rules.
  17. I just caught the end of a news program that the Prez. signed a Executive Order cutting federal spending in the many millions to protect the Great Lakes from Asian Carp as well as other funding for the joint Great Lakes agreement between Canada and the USA. I know the Carp that can procreate are at the gate in Chicago. Please keep any political aspect out of the conversation. I found this http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/canadian-politicians-outraged-at-trump-great-lakes-funding-cuts/article34338510/
  18. I'm surprised this boat hasn't already sold. TJames from this site is looking for the exact same boat at that price actually. I think you are doing everything right Busta. Get it inspected by someone with at least experience, not necessarily a marine mechanic. Even I can do a compression test now. Where are you located exactly? Like GBW said many here are more than willing to look at the boat for you unless it's a long drive.
  19. I would question as to why the seller can not trailer it to a marine mechanic. That would be a giant red herring to me. Why not is my question. So obviously he can't trailer it to put it in the water. I did buy a Lund without splashing it but got a written short term warranty for a possible leak. It leaked stem to stern to the total dismay of the Marine dealer. I got my money back the next day. Had I not had a leak warranty written in I was looking a complete tear out and repair that would have cost me many thousands. 80 hours labour to be exact, that's $8000.00 before materials. Busta 39, I would pass on this boat unless the seller is willing to give a written warranty, not AS IS.
  20. Thanks Geoff, this man had an interesting and adventurous life to say the least. The kind they make movies about. He worked full time at a Hamilton mill for over 30 years and earned himself a good pension. He also was a founding member of a biker club and a 1% er, plus an avid outdoorsman, a hunter and fisherman He was the epitome of the O.G. and an enigma.
  21. That is a great way to buy used "as is" if the seller is willing. In this case the same thing can be documented and the sale is only final after splashing the boat. It is best to get the boat into the water before money changes hands. If a seller isn't willing to put the boat in the water before money changes hands walk away, fast. Running a motor on the muffs and running her under load is a huge difference. It will tell you if that boat has a leak as well.
  22. I just realized a "Rebel" is a Lund. That is a great price. I mentioned in anothet thread about buying a used boat recently my buddy just sold a similar sized Lund but a 2004 I think for more than he paid for it 10 years ago. It has electric downriggers and he threw in some trolling rods. I would grab the deal unless there are obvious problems only after splashing it (splashing it means a water test in a river or lake). You can get yourself a used 75HP with warranty for less than 4 grand from a engine dealer out of Wyoming Ont. I know that because buddy picked up a 150 horse 2 stroke Johnson around 2007 I think for $4000.00 with a 12 month warranty. The seller has a large warehouse with rows of outboards and I/O's. He moves them fast so he can offer good prices. That price included delivery as well. Steve drove out to see it and run it first and the guy knocked off 150 bucks. If anyone is looking for a used power plant PM me and I will get you his number.
  23. Didn't put the water to her today. An old friend passed quietly last night and I just wasn't in the mood to do much but post on a few sites and watch the ducks on the lake. Zero health issues at 63. He just celebrated the birth of his first Grand Baby and was so excited to get him on the water fishing as soon as possible. Just last week someone said the kid is a better fisherman now than he will ever be and we all laughed. I am at that age I guess, every time the phone rings after the cut off time there is a probability the news isn't good. That's life I guess. Death has a tendency to put things like fishing into perspective.
  24. 50 HP would be minimum power for that boat, especially once you start adding Offensive linemen or offensive passengers and a few pops in a cooler. Please delete barnacles and insert Zebra Mussels. I didn't catch that. People buy used boats out east you know. Yes Grimsby getting a Marine guy to look at it is highly recommended. Minimally a pressure test of all cylinders. You are looking for the same pressure across all cylinders. The number of PSI will vary based on engine but I have never seen a number under 100PSI. For a 50HP 2 stroke I would expect to see 110PSI with a differential of only a few pounds maximum. It is simple to pull a plug and inspect it for carbon and wear. If the seller is serious those plugs should be new. Both my Moma engine and Baby kicker get new plugs every spring, a buddy takes my old ones out and puts them in his Mariner. I don't touch a wrench.
  25. There are always threads asking about buying used boats this time of year. Below is a sticky from iboats.com. Everyone looking at a used boat should have this list with them and use it. I don't think there is a copyright infringement as it is generic. Every buyer of used experienced or not should have this list with them when looking at a new to them boat. (for some reason I am able to copy and paste onto OFC, not doable for a while now, quote feature works as well. The only thing not working is posting pictures and the Word options). I thought it was my technical short comings not posting pics but I asked my I.T. guy to show me and he tried a few different ways to do it and ensured it wasn't me it's how my machine talks to OFC's machine. It took him 10 minutes to tell me that though. Maybe this can be stickered to the top of the forum here and classified. A Good Buyers check list for a used boat both Aluminum or Fibreglass The absolute FIRST and MOST important question you should ask the seller is this. DO YOU HAVE THE PROPER PAPERWORK. The boat is a useless paperweight without it. That includes the trailer. In Ontario the trailer is registered with Ontario Ministry of Transportation and all pleasure boats are registered with the Federal Gov. If there is no paper work at all registering with the Feds is not a huge undertaking. We did it 3 years ago and it cost us to get all the documentation notarized by a Notary Public (100 bucks), photos of the boats serial numbers and engine #'s, the boat itself and pics of the registration numbers that were on the hull. Within 2 weeks we had the clean registration. (Opinion of American buyer, it can be complicated in the US as the registration is different state to state) Absolutely positively DO NOT believe that obtaining a title is easy because in most cases it isn't. As a matter of fact offer the seller an extra $100.00 to get the proper paperwork, I bet you 95% of the time the seller will say no at that point walk away no matter how pretty and shiny the boat is WALK AWAY. We are going to Start with the hull. The hull. Start at the bow outside and work your way back. Go over it from bow to stern with a fine tooth comb Are there any major knicks or gashes. Are there any splits in the fiberglass. Look for gel coat spidering or stress cracks. Is the gel coat or paint faded or is bright as if it has been cared for? Is the hull straight no major dents in especially on the bottom side. I.e. an obviously visible hook in the hull. Is there barnacle build up on it anywhere? How does the rub rail look is it mashed in anywhere? (signs that a boat was owned by an inexperienced owner). Look for brown water staining visible around the transom motor mount bolts streaking down from them (for an outboard). Look for brown water staining streaking down from the splashwell plug (again an outboard). Look at the trim i.e. (lights, rubrail trim, horns, anything metal) does it look pitted and corroded or well maintained? Move to the inside of the hull. Start from bow to stern How is the general condition of the upholstery does it look well cared for? How solid is the floor in ALL spots if it is spongy squishy or weak in any spots walk away (unless you are looking for a project). Don't believe that it is going to be a simple fix boats tend to rot from the bottom up. Lift all the hatches and look underneath are there any signs of dampness or rot? Poke prod and feel everything especially all of the hidden areas. Look in the ski locker if equipped how does it look any signs of dampness or rot? Look at the seat bases for signs of dampness and rot. Look at the carpet is moldy and mildewed, or does it have normal wear. If the floor is Plywood encased in fiberglass which is painted look for signs of delamination (fiberglass pulling up). Test all of the electronics. Make sure the bow and stern light are functioning properly. Make sure the horn is working properly. Make sure the bilge pump and blower are working properly. Follow the wires do they look like they are properly connected and running through proper USCG approved fuse boxes? Does the wiring look like proper marine grade wire. Test the radio and speakers make sure they are connected and working properly. Test the steering to make sure it functions properly and easily. Move to the stern. Lift all of the hatches and motor cover. Inspect the motor mounts do they look dry and clean inspect for dampness and rot. How does the bilge look is it clean or has someone been draining the oil into the bilge? Are there signs of brown water stains in the bilge area? Inspect the transom from the inside look for signs of rot. Tap on the inside of the transom with a rubber mallet how does it sound does it sound rock solid or kind of hollow does it feel solid or does it feel like mush. In my experience not many will let you core drill a sample from a transom which is the biggest "no sale" section of a good or bad boat. What you can do is put pressure on the bottom end of an outboard with your foot, no need to jump up and down on it which I saw one person do. If that transom flexes at all there's a good chance she is rotting or rotten. There is the odd situation that a vehicle including boats look like crap, never been cleaned inside, never washed etc. but is mechanically sound. Generally if it looks like a scow 99% of the time it is. And just because it looks good it doesn't mean it is mechanically or the hull is sound, you can put a lot of lipstick on a Pig to shine her up. It was asked recently if it's OK to ask why the seller is selling, I think it is OK. There are many ways to ask that question. I.E "Mam this is a beautiful boat, I don't know if I would be selling it". Many times a seller will give you an answer. Feel free to offer more tips.
