YP, I'm curious about your choice of lines. The std recommendation seems to be to use a leader lighter than the main line so that the leader breaks first.

 

 

Generally this is true but with pike you need the abrasion resistance of the heavy flouro carbon.

You can also use steel leaders if you're so inclined.

 

Personally I use steel or 40# flouro depending on what I am going to be using as a bait.

My standard braid is 30# with 40#-60# leaders wire or flouro.

 

 

When bottom bouncing for walleyes the lighter leader system really comes into play as you are much more likely to get hung up and the fishes teeth are no where near as sharp as pikes are. Same deal goes when I'm fishing for steelhead I want a lighter leader than my mainline so I don't lose my whole rig each time I get snagged.

50lb fluro leader hasn't let me down. A 7ft MH rod with a fast tip should cover most basic techniques. 30lb braid spooled on a 3000 size reel will do ya fine.
