motion Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi guys. Just bought a new Minn Kota Fortrex 80 for my boat to replace my old PD55. I'm really looking forward to the extra push the 80 will give me. It is going to be mounted the bow of the Alumicraft boat I have where the old motor now sits. The motor was mounted by the place I bought it from a few years ago on the right side of the boat. Most of the boats I see have it mounted on the left. Does it matter which side it is mounted on? It doesn't say much about the mounting in the installation manual so I thought it may just be a preference. Thank-you in advance for you help.
BITEME Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 It does not matter but you may need to raise your nav lights on the front if it blocks them in any way
danbouck Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 If it is mounted to the right it may block your view
motion Posted August 11, 2009 Author Report Posted August 11, 2009 I never thought of that. I seem to see fine with it there now as I sit fairly high up on the boat. Does make sense though. Thanks.

Garnet Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Make sure to head doesn't stick out passed the gunwale and the motor as close to the centerline as possible. Garnet
motion Posted August 11, 2009 Author Report Posted August 11, 2009 Looking at the past discussion on this topic I can now see that drivers obstruction and weight distribution would make the logical decision to mount it on the left side.
lunders Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 This is a little off topic, and I know I might get in trouble for it, but anyways... Why is everyone referring to left and right hand side of the boat? I mean - we are talking about boats here, so port and starboard side should be discussed... Not sure if it's just me, but I just think it sounds really wrong using the wrong terms onbard a boat/ship...

TC1OZ Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Wouldn't this just be a matter of preference? Like depending on how you would be sitting in the boat and depending on if you are left or right handed?
lunders Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 I mean - The left hand side of a boat or ship is the called port side. Right hand side is called starboard...
diggyj Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 I think it is personal preference but I have been told by numerous people that it should go on the left side. I recently put mine on the left side. Dirk
