WOW. just wow and great that the thief was apprehended. This person sounds like absolute scum, esp re: the domestic issues.
-
wow,, that is really low and despicable. wish they had lost their license or had it suspended for longer than 30 days ffs. Hope people avoid this place and take their business elsewhere.

the Spit has truly become one of the city's gems. Wild life, city views etc. A great respite although the cormorants, if they're still there, were a blight that killed off many trees. Great that you helped build up a local escape for many !

I'd be looking at the Toronto islands or the Leslie St. Spit area as well, the latter which you can easily bike to. I imagine all the riprap and weed growth by the Spit would be conducive for bass and pike. High Park was great for kids (at least when I was there eons ago) but guessing it's meh now, if even allowed. Never had much luck with the Rouge near Port Union.

Good chopping(chef's) knife
woodenboater replied to SirCranksalot's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
my most used are the Wusthof utility and chef's knives. I'll either sharpen with water stones or with two sided oil. For some stuff the Chinese cleaver sees duty. For the cabin then it's plain jane knife sets or a peasant chef's knife from Lee Valley. -
Had Woods bug jackets but they're getting long in the tooth. Couple of year ago got this https://bugshirt.com/collections/frontpage/products/elite?variant=39423352504505. They're in Powassan so not far from my cabin. Love mine.

Jeff Gustafson has lead at the Bassmaster Classic
woodenboater replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
there's no byline for this story so no idea if it was a wire story or what. Still a great read on Gustafson's final day etc. Guess we'll see an uptick of Loomis rods, Shimano reels and plastics this summer/spring. Any appearances at shows and talks he may give are going to be nutz. I'd drive to hear him talk about the win, and about his methods. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/article-kenora-fisherman-the-first-canadian-to-win-the-bassmaster-classic-in/#comments -
Be sure to know when to use an AED. They're not meant to revive a person who has no heartbeat (heat attack). ie-tv medical shows. As I've seen described elsewhere, a heart attack is a 'plumbing issue' and can't be helped by an AED. A cardiac arrest is an 'electrical issue' and can be aided with the timely use of an AED. Having said all that, getting one for community use is a very smart thing and there really is zero downside.

Jeff Gustafson has lead at the Bassmaster Classic

I didn't watch it online but do we know for sure he was running aluminum and not the GL Pro V ? Seems like a golden opportunity for Lund to capitalize on this win. Also wonder if this will make people rethink aluminum vs glass for these tourneys., but guess it depends on the waters and weather. -

have ridden shotgun on a glass tourney boat down south, how much different would the ride be when they're screaming across the lake in aluminum ? rougher I imagine ? -

another article from the Globe and Mail, this one about testing EVs in Norway. looks like story is behind a paywall. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-norway-electric-vehicles/ "Norway has embraced electric cars like no other country on earth, with batteries powering 79.3 per cent of all new cars sold in 2022. But adoption rates have been slower in Finnmark, where just over half of cars sold last year were electric. In the darkness of Arctic winter, shoppers leave diesel station wagons idling in the parking lot as they stock up on groceries. Not everyone is convinced electric will be better. “The effectiveness of the battery is not so good in this cold,” said Pererik Larsen, a paramedic in Hesseng. His coverage area extends to Bugøynes, a drive of nearly 100 kilometres. As technology progresses and electric range extends, he can imagine using an electric ambulance. But not now. “In this kind of weather, I would be really worried,” he said. story gets more optimistic about EV however fwiw, if I can scrounge the pennies, I'm hoping my next vehicle is this https://www.jeep.ca/en/grandcherokee4xe/2022

Link is behind a paywall but here's a snippet. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-brp-electric-snowmobiles-off-road/ BRP Inc. will begin shipping out its first electric vehicles, Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobile models, later this year as part of a wider, multiyear push to offer electric models in all of its product lines by 2026, the company said in a statement late Monday. A few hundred units will be delivered first to outfitters and tour operators such as Lapland Safaris in Rovaniemi, Finland, with power and range optimized for guided snowmobile excursions up to 50 kilometres. I'm guessing the range is capped because it's going to tour and rentals. Wonder how much heated grips will drain the battery. Less noise would be welcome though...

Gravity water filter systems for camping
woodenboater replied to Headhunter's topic in General Discussion
I'd suggest the large refillable bags that you let drip filter, by hanging it from a tree etc. depending on the body of water you're on, going out into the middle of the lake *can* be safe to drink straight from the lake. Did this on my last Quetico trip and no problems. This was a trip with park wardens and was their suggestion. For filtering, I'd be looking at Katadyn or MSR. Fwiw, friends have caught trophy pike and muskie on flies up there. Good waters for pickerel as well. -
I'm very curious to see how boat manufacturers adapt or reconfigure boats for running electric. Charging at some lodges shldn't be a problem since many have power to the slip. When bassboats go dc, I imagine the entire boat will be a floating battery bank lol
-
imagine if they could fuel cell outboards ? byproduct is water sooo... E-outboards are likely going to happen but will not be cheap. With LiFePo batteries, the area under the deck could be waterproof storage. An option to separate the banks in half so you run half the bank going out, and keep the second as backup. guy can dream I guess lol

I'm leaning towards not harsh enough. Two years is nothing and will fly. Longer ban would have been better, if not an outright lifetime ban. https://northernontario.ctvnews.ca/man-fined-15k-for-shooting-moose-near-espanola-without-a-license-abandoning-it-in-the-woods-1.6212830 Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that 2023 is a banner year for everyone here, and far.
