  1. Peters Tackle at st catherine is famous for long rod, the more number of guide on the rod, the better the rod but will cost more. More guide means less chance of breaking the line during a fight with a fish. I own a 9 ft rod with 11 guides and another 12 ft with only 9 guides. 9-10 ft is the least length you need. Depending on your application, for coarse fishing, noodle rod with 4-8lb rating are sufficient, but if you want to use the rod with lures fishing on moving current of Niagara river, you need a rod with some good back bone 4-12lb line weight is the least you need, some rod like the Shimano convergence takes up to 16 lb. To be even more specific on the type of fishing you are aiming for, for steelheading, the lighter weight rod, the better you can feel the fight. I find convergence way too heavy for steelheading after comparing it to my other lighter weight rod. Shimano Convergence used to have a lifetime warranty, not a bad investment for the long term. The longer the rod, the more prone to potential damage during transport, or to fishing on tight spot. Make sure you are not buying surf rod, they are too heavy and cheaper, not suitable for casting lures on pier. Heavy enough to land a 4 ft shark fishing Miami shore line. I witness some desperate anglers using surf rod on pier with at least 50-75lb mono, they just want to horse the salmon to shore as fast as they can, so the fish taken home for dinner will substantiate the gas they put in. Hard to find a rod that can do it all or for under CA$40! In US, the price exist!
  2. Can you share more details: 1. Time of day 2. Where you had launch? 3. wind forecast for the day 4. type of lures. 5. How deep were your presentation 6. Is it easier to troll during spring, or summer or fall? 7. How does one know how far from shore does one have to go? THanks. I have been wanting to try trolling for salmon, might have to do it soon!
  3. I have been fishing many Kawarthas lake for almost 20 years, It used to have tons of Cabbage weeds, then open water, now the area I just went through only has pencil like weeds all over. Good during spawning season I guess, but larger bass will have to work harder going through too dense of an area. They normally like to stay at the edge of weedlines and then ambush their prey. 3-4 years ago, MNR or Kawarthas locals were trying to control over weed growth on quite a few Kawarthas lake, unfortunately, Cabbage weeds were also irradicated. Rice lake is not one of these MNR working on , since these over growth weeds would have been killed as well. I was trying to locate cabbage weeds, so far no luck, here is the image of the weeds or some american angler call it Bass weed http://www.centurylodge.com/2009%20pictures/excellentmuskieweed.JPG. Another image of the cabbage weeds I am trying to locate but less healthy looking http://www.jasonhalfenoutdoors.com/cabbage.jpg. There were also very small section with Lily pads, I would have landed a couple if there were enough vast lily pads to work on. I probobly just went to the tougher fishing area of rice lake. Fishing should not be that difficult if one can find the right vegetation. All the fish I have landed in 20 years were mostly not too far off cabbage weeds, if I can find this type of weeds, I can find the fish, It does not mean there were no fish on other type of weed vegetation, such as Lily pads or pencil weeds, I did land fish on all type of weeds, just easier for fish to hide from sunlight on thicker cabbage weeds, and if there are some deeper drop off, fish can also hide when there are drastic barometric pressure change. Bass over 2+ lber are more finicky than bass in the 1 lb range. Balsam and strugeon still has the cabbage weeds, sill some decent fishing, fishing numbers have dwindeld down in years as well. I also try to avoid unhealthy weeds, if they are covered with moss or algae and the colours are not healthy, I will avoid the area. Water needs to flow to create healthy vegetation. Healthy vegetation creates oxygen, which plunkton and bait fish needs, eventually attracting larger fish. River fishing generally better conditions these days due to constant moving water. 8 years ago, There were tons of boat trailer parked at dunnet landing, Enter through Roseneath, it used to have lots of people on the campground. It was so quiet on monday, hardly much activity going on. Hardly any boat trailer around means fishing is not good either. The grass where we parked our boat used to be maintained. It grew so long and I was not sure if it was for public boat trailer parking anymore. Being aka Sherlock Holmes, all these tail tell sign tells a person how good of a fishig area it should be. Lake Erie is my next target!
  4. Rice lake Fishing help! We fish from 7:30am – 6pm Water temp = 80 degrees Weather : 5km-10km sunny in the morning, then 10-15km, cloudy and rained in the afternoon. A perfect day to fish in my opinion. Fished at Rice lake Roseaneth- white Island, Hickory Island, East Grape Island, Upper foley. Area was quite swampy, reminds me of Bewdley or lake scugog. Weeds visible floating on the surface as far as the eyes can see. Very few open fishable hole. The deepest part was behind hickory Island showing 20 feet, but fish finder shows soft mud reading. We tried : 1. Drop shotting inside weed holes that was between 4-8 foot deep. 2. Tried casting Floating frog top water technique on dense floating weeds 3. When there were available open hole beside weedbed roughly 10-12 feet deep, we fish with spoon, jigheads, spinners . Unfortunately, very limited area like this, this type of open space was where we caught our few limited fish. Landed –a 2lb catfish, a 2lb bass, 5 bass under a lb, 10 other fish compose of perch , blue gills, sunfish. I have to clean weeds every 5-10 minutes off the trolling motor or off the main engine. I was disappointed to witness the area had change to become so swampy. The last time I was there was 5 years ago. 8 years ago, it used to be great fishing, We landed and release 4-5 lb walleye and lots of bass then, lots of good Bass weeds around. I could not find these Bass weeds anymore. Water gotten shallower. No other boat parked at the boat launch except us. Couple of boat renter were fishing landing sunfish, we also witness couple of 18 footer bass boater zoomed pass the area and went somewhere else, they never fished the area, not to my surprise . Very disappointing to witness the area had changed to become swampy, I do not know how cottager will be able to comfortably ski as well. Unless there were some other applicable fishing technique that I have not applied, I would appreciate some advice on fishing swampy area of rice lake, Bewdley is probably similarly weedy as I recall, lake scugog is also similar, or should I avoid swampy area at all cost?
  5. www.usaddressinc.com 3909 Witmer Road Niagara Falls, NY 14305, United States (716) 298-1822 They charge $5 per package per week for no mailbox rental, Mailbox rental with a US address cost $8 per month($104/year). First week shipment they receive to store your package is free. I have a mailbox address to order stuff on ebay few times a year and then picked them up. Worth the savings. This companies have hundreds of CA customer, claim to receive 700 package per day on peak days. Go fish at the Niagara whirlpool and then pick up the package will be a likely solution. Never order US item shipped through UPS. Their shipment rate might be inexpensive compared to USPS, but brokerage fees are a killer. Item valued over $15 automatically get charge $15-20 for brokerage fees + duties plus HST. CA post or USPS seldom charge for brokerage fees and no duties to pay. It is a hit and miss based on my experience. I do not get charge for any taxes many times buying stuff shipped to Canada. However, US Companies like to use UPS due to convenience of UPS driver picking up the package at their location, rather then having to go to post office themselves. To canadian, it is a disadvantage, that is how UPS make their extra money , where unsuspecting CA customer, believing they are paying less for shipment cost through UPS, get charge brokerage and duties. UPS is doing very well in NOrth Ameirca due to their services, hurting CA post or USPS business in general. For Overnight 24 hour services. FEDEX IS KING! Fedex also have 3-5 day ground services, they are trying to compete against UPS.
  6. mine is a 1998 grand caravan with 3.3 L engine had a transmission cooler and 275000mileage. I tow with my 16 foot trihull fibreglass boat with 85hp engine. No problem towing my boat, just eat 7km/L of gas while towing. sometimes I wish it had more power to get up hill. driving without towing is 9km per L. Owning a 4x4 vehicle might have more power when towing our boat, but can also eat unnecessary gas when we are not towing our boat during regular driving.
  7. Carp fishing seems to be slower than ever this year . THEY ARE THERE, JUST WOULD NOT BITE! I have been to few places , saw them but they are ready to spawn right now and lesser quantity compared to last year , water was also lower than normal.
  8. Try to make sure all existing moisture disappears inside. You might need to make the hole bigger to ensure enough air circulation to dry out all water moisture, it takes time to dry. You can patch the hole with fibreglass compound found at the autmotive section of Canadian Tire. The patch will be as strong as the fibreglass body itself. Sand and paint if you are finicky about the look.
  9. I bought from these Uk guys, great deal and flat rate shipping of $6 to toronto. The big long large streamer were mostly what I bought, good deal. many for o.50 cents. Good quality as well. https://secure.theflyfactory.co.uk/web/index.php
  10. Here is an interesting video on how to unhook a fly hook on someone's nose. The fellow will show us how to unhook it easily, fast and almost painless. Good to know this lifeskill since we will one day need it for sure.
  11. A Bystander got hook close to his eyes with a rapala J-13, by a shore angler aiming to catch his salmon . What exactly Happened: I just landed a Salmon while I shore fished that day, then went to my car to grab a garbage bag to keep my catch. There was another angler who fished beside me complained that evening that other non anglers behind us have blasted their car sound system and talked so loud. The angler was bothered and irritated the whole time we were fishing, he dropped his 12' rod all the way back behind him during his cast, wanted to ensure those bystanders were far enough to not come any closer. Just less than 10 minutes, by that time I came back, Ambulance and police arrived to question the incident. I found out that couple of the Bystanders came to look at my salmon that was on the ground while I was away, that was when the angler fishing beside my spot accidentally hooked one guy. The angler called the cop in since he was concern that he might get beaten up by the group of guys. We all left the area after what had happened! ANOTHER FUNNY STORY: My non-coordinated accountant was never allowed to fish again after he hooked his wife's arm with a crankbait during casting! Can't blame him!
  12. A recall is a recall regardless where you bought it. Repair center all over the world is posted on their manual. It was a Canadian Camera, the Canon Canada pretend that the digital camera was discontinued. I did not complain to the right party higher up during that time. US companies are more aware of bad publicity and willing to deal with it. Canon Camera was originaly a Japanese Company! Obama (regardless of political motive)is planning to use their gas reserve soon if Oil prices keeps on going up. Canadian produce the oil and yet our gas prices were way too high. We are being taxed twice on our gas alone. HST taxed again over above already built in HST on the crude oil, was the last weeks news revealed by reporter. Ex-President Ronald Regan fired US Air traffic controllers when they boycotted their jobs, then hired all the contract and temp workers to permanent replace those who broke the law. Regan intervened, then created a decree for Air traffic controllers to never go on strike again. Few weeks back,Air canada employee continued to go on strike inspite of a new decree that insisted that they go back to work. Many travellers were stranded that whole week causing a chain reaction where other airlines have to compensate the travellers as well. The lady councellor just lost face, whatever she tried to do to help consumers were not taken seriously. Many of us who are unaware or helpless to intervene on the unnecessary 1.2 Billion dollar spent by Canadian government on the G Summit meeting held here in Toronto, during the summer of 2010. In contrast, the average money spend by US government on their summit meetings was around $200million. The G8 and G20 Summit meeting did create jobs at the expense of other tax payer. It is not Canadian retailers anymore that we have to be concerned of, it is a global retail issue. The whole world is becoming one global market as we speak. We are not just competing against US retailers anymore. Florida Condo property only cost $50-70K in some areas today, why have the only option to invest in an overpriced Toronto $500K house property?
  13. I had similar bad experience with Canon Camera Canada. The Mississauaga office do not honor recalls for my camera model which was unprofessional of Canon Canadian office. I went to the US Canon manufacturer's site and other on line forum that gives advice on how to get things done. The US Canon site paid for both shipping and returning it back to me free of charge. They provided UPS services free pick up as well and boxes provided, total Cost of repair and service ,more than the camera value itself. Sometimes complaining to the right higher authority is the key. I have to trace a VP of TD auto insurance to get my car fix rather than writing it off. The insurance adjuster wanted to offer me $1200 for my damaged vehicle, when the book value was only $800. I insisted that they fix it since I was not able to find a comparable good conditioned used vehicle for around $3000. They gave an auto body shop $2000 to eventually fix my vehicle. My insurance cost stayed the same. Buying another vehicle will cost my insurance to rise. I got $50 food voucher from Denny's USA for complaining to the head office about the rudeness of one particular branch service. The manager of Boston market US branch gave us one free meal (we ordered 3 out of 4 that day)since the item on their menu ran out of stock. We were embarassed to accept it, but the manager insisted to our surprise, we were not even complaining, he just dropped the quarter chicken meal to our table. I then wrote to the head office about the positive thing this manager did for us. I had a 20% off coupon valid for 1 Item at Dunham sport US store, spoke to the manager if I could buy 3 item and still get the discount, he said no problem! Evinrude USA in chicago technical support, always gives me free mechanical advice cheefully. US business are way more competitive than Canadian businesses ,even more so after the recession. They need to compete to survive their lousy economy. Many have change and believe that customer service is the only key to keep repeat customer happy , since buying direct from China might offer better pricing but not the service and expertise the store can offer. I buy auto parts, home necessities, fishing and other sporting goods at Buffalo, NY. Plan my trip 4 times a year to ensure I buy enough to save the $55 gas that I put in. I was able to return damaged goods back to some US buffalo store after holding it for few months. They knew that canadians do not always have time to go back and exchange goods. Buffalo store retailers need Canadian shoppers ,were always expecting and ready on every Canadian holidays. All fastfood store in the USA were in the survival mode, stores such as Mcdo, Arby's , wendy's, Burger king , all offer $1 menu. I am not talking about mini/junior burgers or mini fries. Mcchicken or Fillet of Fish or nuggets are US$1. Large Little Ceasar Peperoni Pizza in USA is US$5.(medium pepperoni pizza in Canada is CA$5). Subway 6" was US$2 last december. Dollar Tree(coming to Canada soon so wake up! Dollarama) is all $1. Rotiseeri cooked hot whole chicken was $2 at walmart when I was there during march break week. I was at Ollie's bargain outlet (Big lot also have good value product) buffalo last thursday(avoiding the weekend craze), Ollies bought out some sport check USA old fishing inventory stuff. Not all were good deals, but I got some P-line fluorocarbon 250 yards 10 and 15lb test for $8-10. Fly line or P-fluroclear was around $6. P-line XX tough line was around $6. Got me a Large 30" Salmon anti-snag coated net for $6. Then we went to Dick's sporting goods at Galleria mall and got a Shimano baitcasting IM7 stiff 2 pc rod rated 8-20lb for only $22. Their 1 piece rod were also $22. I got a leg rubber waders at Dicks on sale 2 years ago for $20, regular today was just $30. Gander mountain 9-12' steelhead/Salmon rod was $50 regular price. I got one similar Gander M steelhead rated 6-12lb 10' rod for $30 on sale last year. Last week I found some special auto parts from Autozone USA, I was able to find CV split boot kit including the 5 mini screws for $6.50 each , this part were not available in most Toronto auto stores after my thorough search. By installing the CV boot by myself, without having to take apart the shaft(just cut the old CV boot out and install the new one), I was able to save at least $300 of repair cost. A year back during winter months, I bought a pair Uniroyal (a subsidiary of Michelin tire)205-70-15 tires rated at 75,000 miles from Walmart Buffalo for $60 each(regular was $75 each), balance, taxes inclusive and installed. I requested to the manager to drop the price since other tire store in the area offered better pricing. Walmart USA charge $5 for tire balancing. Buying tires in Buffalo is worth the savings alone. Sam's USA charge 4L of Valvoline motor oil for $7.50, Walmart CA on sale for $12.50. US on line store offers free shipping cost within US state, or free shipment to a local US store. I own a Mail box address across the border for $8 a month for the purpose of ordering items. It is worth the investment and savings. The US Mail box company claim to receive up to 700 package per day of goods from Canadian shoppers alone. After 20 years of comparative shopping, buying from US has always been worth the trip, especially if we plan ahead and do comparative shopping. My family stop staying over night just for the sake of keeping our shopping import allowance within 24 hour time limit. We bought on average of $250/per trip among 3 to 4 family members travelling together during our 8 hour trip to Buffalo, we never have to pay import or HST taxes in 25 years we have been travelling to the US. No need to lie to the custom officer has always been our shopping policy, after we have created some kind of shopping spending pattern recorded at the Canadian custom computer system, I believe custom officers were very lenient to most honest people who declares. They are more strict on bringing in alchohol and tobacco.
  14. Thanks guys. Though the reel never came with a manual, Mechanism was simple and straight forward, I was able to take it apart and reverse some kind of magnetic mechanism cluth inside. The reel retrieve counterclockwise quietly now to be spooled coming out from the bottom just similar to a centerpin reel setup. The drag now works clockwise. Great! It is a very good reel for the price of $35, quiet and smooth. The drag can be set continuosly until almost tight drag. I borrowed a fly reel from my buddy during winter months to practice casting and decided to get into fly fishing.
  15. I just got an inexpensive fly reel with drag on line. I am new to fly fishing. I am not sure if they sent me the right or lefty model? I need a left hand retreive fly reel and cast with my right hand. My reel drag goes counterclockwise. Is this reel shown on video for righty or lefty? Here is the video http://s223.photobucket.com/albums/dd294/bassfighter_album/?action=view&current=flyreelretreive.mp4 How does one spool a fly reel? To the top straight beside the rod or from the bottom just like spooling a Centerpin reel? Thanks
  16. Costco discontinued their Deep cycle battery last year, I pressume lots of return from consumers not managing their deep cycle or car battery, then returning it. However,Costco does not lose money nor care for the returns, the manufacturer have to eat the losses. They brought it back due to demands from their customer. In terms of warranty, Costco all the way. 1 year free or 48months prorated warranty on their battery, no question asked, just show your receipt. They do not even re-test the battery when you returned them. Deep cycle seldom last that long becuase of abuse on the battery. What if customer return their batteries every 3 years, and get new batteries. Poor manufacturer have to deal with it! Walmart has 24 months warranty only. One year free replacement.
  17. http://ca.autos.yahoo.com/p/2483/canadian-hobo-cops-nail-unsuspecting-drivers
  18. Costco battery warranty are the best,no question ask policy even after 3 years. make sure to check the manufacture date as well, to ensure you are getting one made this year not last year. Do not disregard the sticker that show the date 5/02, useful info when battery gets damage and need replacement warranty. My car and boat has their battery for the past 15 years. only car battery got damage after 3 years and they prorated the cost of the battery , they have 48 months warranty on their batteries.
  19. Saw Deep cycle battery back at Costco, 650 amp for $80, while 750 amp for $90. They are decent for the price and warranty has always been the best in the industry. They also have dual purpose battery. For trolling , I would suggest use single Deep cycle, my battery lasted me for 5 years with proper maintenance. I read on line the Dual purpose is not as powerful for trolling. It was discontinued last year and now back on the shelves. Autospot sells trolling motor battery for $85.
  20. I fished it twice last year due to a friend invitation, Water level was higher during spring time last year for most kawarthas lake but way lower this year. Very shallow and weedy lake, I heard it is a hit and miss lake in general, due to shallow depth, hardly any deep area for fish to hide when water gets too cold or too hot. Many areas average under 5 ft of water. Lots of weeds covered with algae and seem unhealthy. Pike normally were killed and request not to be thrown back at balsam to protect musky habitat. More smaller pike at Mitchell, where bass tends to shy away from the area once they finished spawning. I never fished there during bass opener, I pressume the shallow weedy habitat is excellent spawning ground for bass around April and May, but by opener, many will be gone. In general, I do not like to fish this lake. Balsam and Cameron is just few minutes away.
  21. IS pike open now at lake ontario for commercial fisherman? I was at belleville, bay of quinte near the boat launch at Moira river beside bay bridge. I witness a 22 ft commercial fishing boat with Bins of different fish species ,no rod with them, so I pressumed the fish were trap. Lots of dead pike on one bin, sunfish and blue gills on another bin, other fish on other bins which I did not witness since they were stacked, there were roughly 12 bins where each bins only carry one species of fish, I can assume the other bins have other type of fish, another lady was with the two guys on shore, she had a note pad and itemized what were being caught. No clue if she was buying the fish, or just recording what was being caught for whatever purpose. I did not have the MNR tip line, but the 2 guys on the boat that saw me approach their boat, seem to be over friendly, was watching me every so often when they were unloading the fish. I approach them asking where I can catch Carp in the area. I still have their plate number and type of truck on record.
  22. The American government just finish the newest survery on Fishing and hunting that ends in March 2012. It might take a year to get the latest report. It would be interesting to know what happen during the recession period. This 2006 survey report was available, Data has been collected every 5 years. An interesting read. http://library.fws.gov/pubs/nat_survey2006_final.pdf 87.5 million Americans spend roughly 122 Billion dollars in fishing , hunting, wildlife related recreation in 2006 37.4 Billion was trip related 64.1 billion was spent on equipment 20.7 Billion was spent on other items such as license, land leasing , etc... 42 Billion spent on fishing alone 5.3 Billion on tackle, fish finder, lures. 12.6 Billion on bOats, vans, cabin. 23 Billion spent on hunting 30 Million people fish 12.5 Million people Hunted 8.5 Million people hunt and fish 26 Billion spent on food, lodging & transportation. Bass fish rank no. 1 fish anglers target. 30 million people age 16+ and over fish in 2006 compared to 34.1 million in 2001 , population is down probably due to many being more on computers, a 12% drop. However expenditures remain the same. 25 million anglers spent 433 million days and 337 million trips. Lot more intensive detailed info on number of days people fish , habits, type of fishing , education level, demographics, fresh and salt water comparison, etc... 35 to 54 years old compose of 47% of all anglers. 25-34 years old are 16% of all anglers 55-64 years old are 15% of all anglers. MOre information on Hunting related issues..........
  23. When I tell people I fish during winter months, they all assume I only Ice fish, and why do I have to tolerate being cold outside. I have to tell them repeatedly that there are many creeks and river system that is fishable during winter months without having to just ice fish. To be a Canadian we have to embrace the winter outdoor. Many also assume fishing is so boring, a waste of time and anglers do not do anything except to wait, they probably saw an older Popeye show where he tied his fishing line on his toe while taking a nap. I tell these folks that the sport fishing industry in North america has a sale of more then 2 Billion dollars a year , more than Golf and Tennis sale combined.
  24. I am glad to hear you have won your case, since it was an honest mistake, and you were sincerely about to rectify the issue. I knew another friend who got similar ticket when he was on his way to Canadain tire to buy his lightbulb to replace the busted one. I presuaded him to fight his case in court as well. This fellow was in such bad luck getting tickets, he got a ticket once from driving too close to a parked police car on the freeway at 2am in the morning when no other car was on site. He did not know that one should avoid the lane closest to a parked cop car if possible. I also knew another friend who has not change his busted head lights for almost 4 months even if he was aware of it. He was just too lazy and got away with it. A car with a busted light coming towards us can be mistaken as a motorcycle, we cannot be 100% sure which lane the car with the busted light coming towards us, depending on which Left or right front headlights were busted.
  25. 90% of my experience buying used stuff have been good since I always ask the right question before I decide to meet for the transaction. Got his bad experience years ago that ,ade me smarter when dealing with used stuff: 1. I was told he used the item only 2 times, by the time I showed up , the item was 20 years old. He said I did not ask if he was the original owner. 2. Showed up and he was waiting for another buyer to show up the same time, expecting highest bidder wins. 3. Item condition describe was exagerated. 4. People enquired to buy but not serious, just wanted some free lesson or information. 5. Other liquidated stuff that are practically garbage. Example, A person selling 500 of 3 prong hook cheap and they were rusty and unsharp. He claimed he does not know anything about fishing. I guess if you deal with enough good transaction to offset some bad experience, it might be worth while for the savings. Isn't this today's life journey?
