It was a tough year , the 2nd week in July on the south shore of Nipissing the Big mother bass were still on the nest. I couldn't believe it. Pickerel were few and far and not even the perch were great. Could also be because of the ghost gill nets they've been finding as well though.

Stayed on Nipissing just west of Callander near Wasi Falls this year Pickerel limit of 2 and had to be over 18" killed us. Fished pencil reeds and deep drop off in central channel to Callander Bay and nothing. Beautiful little resort, fishing was slow and hard. There the 2nd week of July.

Got a pair of Tifosi sunglasses at the local golf store. $134. great polarized glasses, hard case with three different sets of lens and the lens have a breathing vent near the rim. Love them. Bill

I love my new Compres but for longevity I've got a Daiwa Swinger rod Light action that I have used for almost 40 years. This little spinning rod has handled everything from panfish to a 41 " Northern and still is solid. Don't make them like they used to. Still use it with my Shimano Saros spinning reel.

Two unique experiences one when I was working around Englehart as a junior forest ranger we're out clearing weed trees from a reforested area. All of a sudden we hear crashing and look up, here is this big bull moose running through the bush being chased by a pack of wolves. Ran right through the area we were clearing and didn't even notice us. At the same location, we were coming to the area we were working on an a bull moose is standing in the middle of the road. Bus driver decides to blow the horn and the damn moose charges the bus. Another instance we're staying at a cottage on the French River and notice these two small animals. Turns out their mink and would try and raid minnow buckets or any fish parts left down by the dock. Beautiful little animals. Love the north except for the damn black flies. Bill

Given the way the body frame looks in the picture and the brindle colouring I'd say a greyhound mix for sure.

Thanks for the information guys, thinking of going up for a day instead of Simcoe. Staff was there at an uncle's cottage and caught two six pounders. Looks like a nice little lake. Can't blame them for wanting to keep it to themselves. Looks like a lot of cottages on the lake. google Earth shows some nice spots . What are the rivers coming out of it? Looks fairly large. Bill

Does anyone know if there is a public boat launch on Lake Eugenia? Heard it has some good bass fishing.

Each side of this issue has their own valid points, but the one that sticks out is "the lake doesn't care who has the right, the fish don't care either". This is all to true. I was at Nipissing this summer and enjoyed the fishing. I don't target walleye (pickeral I'm Canadian hey!) and like bass. Still, when I';m out fishing I'll keep maybe two fish for a meal and the rest get released. If I catch a larger fish, it's a picture if I can get it done and not harm the fish. It doesn't matter if it's perch, pickeral, bass , pike or what, the joy is in the hunt , yes I agree with keeping some to eat, but not to excess. I saw a fisherman keep a 47", 25lb. Muskie to have stuffed. I dont' class him as a sportsman. We need to appreciate the resource and treat it with respect. That basic attitude will go farther than any legislation. This applies to everyone, if you are a commercial fisherman, you won't be for long if the resource crashes. Bill

Nipfisher, I should have tried to set up a date in North Bay, didn't think we'd be going there but the 19 year old Diva had to get something she had forgotten at home. We could have met up and I wouldn't have had to brave the mall with the girls. Nice weather but that Lake does get up when the wind blows from the west doesn't it? Bill

I must be sooooooo cheap because if I had reels like that they'd never see the light of day. They'd be sitting on a pedestal by my desk so clients could ooohhhhaahhhhh at them.

I'm sorry, I think a fish that size HAS to go back to breed another day. Quick picture and have a replica made. I couldn't convince this guy from the other cabin any different . I hadn't checked the regs and figured it's up to the camp operator to make an issue of it if its under the size limit. Just figure and I operate like this with any species, the healthier , larger fish need to remain in the population to breed another day.

Arrived at our cottage on Lake Nipissing on Saturday around 2:30 pm. Like most rentals not supposed to move in until around 3 but Bud and Linda our great and we got in a bit early. They are a great couple and run a great outfit. Picture of the cottage Went out fishing for awhile and checked out the bass spot just at the mouth of the bay. The bass were still there, but with the hot weather , not in the quantity they were there last year. Decided to relax for the rest of the night and looked out later to see this sunset. Up bright and early the next morning to find the local residents already "flocking around" looking for breakfast. This was going to be an exploratory day, trying to find where the bass had gone first of all. Did some shallow structure drop shotting, wacky worm , crank bait casting, spinner bait casting and nothing was happening. Decided to try some structure that has 16' on the deep side and 4-8 ' on the other side. This did work for the following. This area is fairly well built up but still has some lovely scenery and restful areas. The following are right close to the camp. Another beautiful sunset as the evening rolled around Wednesday rolled in to be sweltering at least to me, bluebird skies and no wind at all. We still managed a few bass with a worm harness over some deeper rock beds. It was pretty much the same for the rest of the week. Thursday we tried some 35' water and came up with the following guys. Late on Thursday, we found out about a small weed bed in the next bay. We went over and tried it with a bobber and worm harness believe it or not and missed a large bass. I went back in on Friday and found the guy there again. He (She) was a beautiful fish. Rest of the day was spent getting ready for the trip home and relaxing with a brew on the lovely little beach. All in all a lovely vacation. Forgot to add and I know I mentioned it earlier in the posts, gentleman from the camp caught a 47" 25lb. Musky while fishing for pickeral. He decided to keep it and have it mounted. Could not be persuaded out of it. Do people still mount fish? I thought everything was replicas these days from pictures?

Was up in Nipissing this past week, only caught 5 pickeral. Fished from 4' to 35' deep but couldn't get into them. We stayed near Callander Bay , at Deep Bay on the south shore. In fact, the fishing was down over last year. Will post report in next couple of days , just got back. Some pictures and a controversial topic to be sure coming up.

Yes, he would be proud, I had a great father who passed in 2005 after a lifetime of hard work and sacrificing for myself and my sister. The early morning hockey games, the piano recitals and the best part was later in life , having him on family vacations with my wife and daughter. He also loved to fish. I try every day to be as great as he was. Be proud.

And I thought I had too many rods with only six. God , I can tell my wife that I've got a long way to go. I have rod cases for all of them except the 7' one piece and that has a rod sock and Shimano reel cover. Bill

Snidely, thanks for pointing that out to me, I observed no no trespassing signs and although you continued with a low brow personal attack , I am a 3rd generation white Canadian that yes, I didn't jump on the MNR site to make sure I could fish there. My bad. You want to be an ignorant jerk go somewhere else. I have a valid 3year fishing liscence and probably more so than yourself am environmentally conscious and very rarely keep any fish. So I applaud you for pointing it our but lambaste you for a personal attack. Bite me.

I generally tie on about 4 ft of fluorocarbon (spelling? to my braid and that's all I'd use. But two years ago on the French I had a fish bite off 60 lb.Seaguar leader material. Now I still use the 4 ft but tie a 12 " tungsten leader on the end. Not for my bass or perch set ups but just for the Pike rig.
