  1. Well my little Korean, Canadian tire 7bearing spinning reel has finally bit the dust after 6 years. I am looking for a small spinning reel for use with my light action Daiwa rod that I use for perch. Even though light action , this rod has landed a 41" Northern with this little reel. I have a Pfleuger President but at around 11 oz. it is way to heavy for this set up. Any suggestions, looking at not much over $100.00 so lower end Shimano , or Pflueger or other. I'm not brand dominated, just want a relatively good, long lasting reel. (And it's 6' rod not 6" , Bill you dummy) Bill
  2. Thanks for the info . I appreciate the help Bill
  3. What Garry2Rs said may be the ticket. I have it on a MH fast action cranking stick from BPS. As I said, the crank bait goes well , it is the lighter mid range Mepps baits I was throwing that seemed to not go very far. I am going to do a regular maintenance as suggested from the Shimano site, and then just work it in for awhile. This may mean that I actually NEED TO BUY MORE FISHING RODS. DAMN (being sarcastic as it doesn't translate well in text) Thanks for the info guys. Bill
  4. I've got the Citica spooled with 15 lb. High Vis Spider Thread. Maybe I'm expecting too much, if I have my Live Target crawfish crank bait on and really cast hard with the wind I may get 5-6 boat lengths of 14' boat. However, with lighter baits can't seem to get much distance and I have the tension on the spool backed right off. I love the reel and the drag and power on retrieve is great. Bill
  5. Hey guys: I am wonderring if I need to have my new Citica serviced, or lubricate it or something. I have never been into the guts of my reels before but my new out of the box Citica doesn't seem to cast that far . I only have 2 brakes engaged and the spool tension backed off. I have been using baitcasters for some time so I'm not having a problem with bird's nests but I can't seem to get a lot of distance with lighter baits. Any suggestions. Bill
  6. As with everyone above, I've got braid with about 4 ft of flourocarbon leader tied on the end. Set the hook and then bury the rod tip in the water, this seemed to keep most of the fish from jumping. Problem though with long casts and crankbaits, lot of line out there to set the hook , even with braid and lost a couple in the air. Still fun though. Bill
  7. We stayed there once, not too bad , cabins clean however central showers which was a surprise for us . If I remember right, it is right across the river from Meshaw Falls cottages. If you go across the river you'll see the falls coming down. Most people go in close to the mouth of the creek because the falls gives quite an outflow. However, there is a weedline that stretches out into the river, I 'd say almost halfway across. I sat there around 8"00 pm one night and caught almost 10 pike and my personal best 42" pike on an ultrlight rod with 15 lb. test line. What a battle. They were using leeches for the pickerel back then, this is over ten years ago. bill
  8. Here's the pictures in the first post, for some reason it keeps saying You must post.
  9. Okay, I'm trying to figure out how to upload some pictures to a post I have made. Looked in help and the info on THE GALLERY but I can't even find that. Some help please. Bill
  10. Over the last couple years on the French, fishing was hard and not very successful. This year was different. Went up to a little cottage place called Cosy Cove Cottages on the south shore of Lake Nipissing. Bud and Linda are great, rustic cottages and clean. Thanks to Bud who revealed some if his secret spots reserved for clients. Storm went through the day before we got there so wasn't expecting much. Smallmouth just would not stop biting , it was joyous. For the next six days through wind, (4 ft. waves outside the bay) and varying temperatures I got to enjoy spectacular smallmouth fishing. Pictures to follow. The whole week was spent using baby bass colour or another green colour I can't rembember 5" Yamamoto senkos. These baits produced when nothing else worked for others. Got a couple hits on the Live Target crawfish, and a set with the tungsten worm weight and Yum craw pepi worked the first day. Also got into some pickerel and perch and a large drum. The pickerel hit on a #5 Mepps spinner bait which I had never experienced before. 22" long and released to swim another day. We kept a few fish for some lovely meals and watched some beautiful big bass swim away. I was lovely. Bill:
  11. Another warning about Giant Hogweed, not only is it quite serious immediately, the sap makes the skin more susceptible to UV rays for future years. It is suggested that you need to avoid this plant altogether. I am not happy about Halton's response to this, there are large patches of it along 4th line south of Campbellville road that are allowed to go to seed every year. No spraying is done and these patches are spreading and yes, the Region knows they are there, two of them are one their poisinous plant map. Bill
  12. Just orderred a hydrographic map of Nipissing from Leslie at Lakair. We aren't staying there yet she was very helpful and pleasant. No wonder all the lucky OFC people are there. Was a pleasure speaking with her. Bill
  13. Unlike everyone else, I know very little about the make up of the rods. All I know is I took my Citica into BPS and tried it with St . Croix Mojo Bass, Crucial, Daiwa, a couple other St Croix, an E21, and I finally ended up with a 7'6" BPS Cranking Stick. It just felt the best in my hand, had the tip action I liked and the cork handle I liked. Some power hump thing they call it but it just felt good. Supposedly IM6 graphite which I know is not the best but hell , I fish only for enjoyment not professional and again, the rod and reel felt good together. Bill
  14. I don't own a boat but would like to be able to go to Simcoe and go fishing on some weekends. Have my boat operator's licscence. I know of a place in Cook's Bay but what about southern Simcoe, say around Keswick area or along the coast on the southern Simcoe? Any ideas? The boat I rented in Cook's Bay had a 15hp Yamaha motor that must have been governed. Took me 1/2 hour to just get out the the weed beds, usually about 3 minute ride in the buds 50HP. Bill
  15. Not to hijack this thread but I'm looking for something to protect my 7'6" cranking rod. Beautiful rod although not that expensive . Can't find anything to fit. Bill
  16. I've got a lab , husky mix and he does not like small animals. Funny though, we had a cat in the house when we brought him home from the pound as a pup and he and hobo got along for years. Anyway, he has the same tunnel vision I call it if scents or smells "prey". We found a trainer that deals with behaviour and problems dogs but couldn't find the time. Name is Wolf Man K9. Pm me if you want phone numbers "Training for all breeds, all ages, all sizes". He deals with police dogs etc.
  17. Had mine done, let's see, 3-4 years ago. No problems , still going strong, well as strong as you can go when you're 59.Work hard on it in janitorial and landscaping business we own, so hasnt been babied. PM me if you want my surgeons name. Bill
  18. Now that's nice, I have a Plano guide and another Plano. Find that the crankbaits, spinner baits take up a lot of room. Second tackle box carries all the extra line rolls, marker buoys, and that stuff. Use an old soft plastic lunch bag to hold all the soft plastic, Powerbaits and such.Where did you find the inserts with the "guides " to hold the crankbaits in place.
  19. Oh yeah, been there , done that, family pet just a mutt part husky, part golden lab, put his knee out. $1300.00 later . My father who was alive at the time looked at me and said, you're dumber than the dog is. Wife and daughter had to have him though. He's still a pain in the @#$% , has real attitude problems but we love him. Bill
  20. Gentlmen, there is another side to the supply and demand equation that no one has mentioned. We are the ones driving that demand, we drive our car, we use our boat motors, we drive our RV. Cut down the demand and the price goes down. However, this involves a societal change in thinking that isn't going to happen soon. I won't get into the alternative energy side of the argument as it appears that with the price of oil so high , alternatives like solar, wind, geothermal etc. are becoming more attractive. I believe that as the world's supply of oil goes down, the producers have seen the writing on the wall and are determined to some extent to drive the price higher. Libya's share of world production was what, 2% , and you are saying this justifies a price increase. No, there is a certain amount of price fixing there but the oil as a commodity argument is valid. As far as governments being able to do something, unlikely , as the price goes up so does the amount of tax they collect. Who here has seen a politician give back tax dollars. Hell, the GST was supposed to be a temporary measure. Bill
  21. Okay, as a newbie can someone give me the details. Do I call Lakair and book a cottage myself , is there a group rate? Is there a special group of cottages? Can someone give me an idea of the cost? Do I have to reserve a boat or do we go out with each other? (I know that doesn;t sound right). Feel free to PM me. Bill
  22. I'm not a pro so opinion is ???? however, went to BPS during the sale and looked at the Sufix 832. Seemed awful stiff to me and would have some memory. Then again, I'm in love with Spider Thread as stays limp and holds up well. Did buy some Seaguar Abrazix though to put on the reel I use for float fishing. We'll see. Bill
  23. I don't know much about the subject either, just remembering a Chronzy show where they were showing the explosion of sea lice in the surrounding wild population of salmon as a result of the fish farming. Apparently can be fatal to the stock and is a result of the massive "congestion" in the farmed stock. Bill
  24. I am the proud new owner of a Shimano Citica 200E. Always a Daiwa man but the force drew me in. Not all the way though as picked up a sweet little Pflueger spinning reel as well. What does everyone think of the Voltaeus rods from Shimano?
