  1. I have only used pop-ups. Love them. How will you deal with the weight of the flip-overs? Getting it on and off your vehicle? Sleepjigging
  2. Sorry, limeyangler, that was manitoubass2's idea. Though I would still like to meet you guys. Sleepjigging
  3. Quick update: wife's contact in Thunderbay told us to rent a TRUCK and go see Kakebeka Falls - Niagara of the North. Now I am looking for an inland ice hut operator or guide. I looked on the thunderbay fishing forums too, but could not find any between Thunderbay and Kakabeka Falls. Anyone know someone? Manitoubass2: PM sent. DanC: PM sent Limeyangler: It's too far to go to Dryden this trip.
  4. The wife invited me to visit Thunder Bay for a weekend. Before deciding, I called some bait stores in Thunderbay. Out of 8 listed stores only 1 answered up the phone (3pm ish) and they had gone out of business. He adviced me to call 2 other stores that might have bait. No one picked up. Got 4 or 5 answering machines. One had a message saying that ice fishing is happening. That was good enough for me. I told her to book me a flight. Hotels.ca : $77/night for Motel 8. Car rental (compact) $15/day. Flight $400ish (Porter) + $25 baggage fee (I will be bringing an auger/Baffin Titans/floatsuit). Now that I am committed, anyone want to clue me in as to what to expect in Thunderbay in 2 weeks? Weathernetwork predicts 0 to -10C for that weekend. Will it look like Buffalo when we get there? 5' of snow? Where can I find some fish? Thanks. Sleepjigging
  5. On the weekend, my buddies wanted to explore some lakes on crown land in the Bancroft area. We drove out there. Hiked in and bumped into some guys in ORANGE. They showed us their big bullets. And there was gun shots in the distance in the direction that we were headed. We decided that it was a BAD time BAD place to go fishing and left. The small lakes were starting to skim over. We were in a blizzard in the early afternoon up there. Got back to Toronto later and it was 6 degrees C. What other times is it not good to go fishing? Sleepjigging I go fishing every chance I get. However, I am out for the scenery, and catching a fish is bonus.
  6. That is so awesome. I was laughing as I was reading about getting spooled and smoking the reel. I saw a youtube video on catching tarpon from a boat - and they had to chase the fish with the boat to have a hope of landing it. When I was in Boston last year, I caught some small fish from the ocean shore - and they all had gnarly teeth - little wrasse to bluefish. Gotta thank you guys for the great advice. I will not do any night fishing in Miami. Is it safe enough in the lower keys or Key West to do some night fishing? I would like to try it one evening, and I was worried even before Craig said it. One more burning question: do you have any thoughts on renting a convertible automobile down there. I am going to need a vehicle anyways. Maybe I can upgrade (Mustang convertible)? Cruising down highway 1 with the top down in the warm sun would be cool. Sleepjigging
  7. Hello everyone, I am stoked to be planning a trip to sunny Miami the same week as the Superbowl with just my wife, (instead of ice fishing back here). We will fly down Saturday Jan 31, 2015, and will have 5 days to enjoy the scenery and some fishing. We will take a drive down to Key West. So I have done some research, and would like to get a little more advice from the best group of anglers in the world. I will be flying down from Toronto, most likely on Air Canada. Luggage is $25/bag. I have some travel rods - 5.5' for panfish. I have one salmon rod, but it is 3' broken down. I don't think I will be allowed to take it as carry on. Question 1. Should I bring rods and reels? I have two Shimano RX4000 with 20lb powerpro and 20lb fluoro leader. I think using that to catch baitfish is ok, but the monsters in the ocean will just snap them like twigs. If I don't drop them into the salt water, will they be okay? I plan to fish the beaches/piers and bridges Miami to Key West. My wife wants to catch a swordfish (and wanted to get it stuffed and brought back. Then she realizes that if I caught one and brought it home, she would let me mount it in the living room. She doesn't like swimming in deep water, so diving in the reefs is out; and so is kayaking in the ocean. She will do the airboats for the everglades. She realizes that this is turning into a fishing trip for me. So my reply was: dear, while you and I are tanning on the beaches, we will have lines in the water with little jingle bells on the rods. And Ernest Hemmingway lived in Key West, there is key lime pie, and the seaqurium. I know that there is a salt water fishing permit, with exception for paid pier fishing and charters. We may do one deepwater charter ($600/day) + one party fishing boat ($50/person 4hr). Any advice will be welcome. Thanks in advance. I am so excited. Sleepjigging
  8. I have found that most cameras do well most of the time. But, they will show their worth in challenging situations: that's where you want to put your money. Night time shots - for that walleye under moonlight. Most cellphone camera struggle at this. Sport mode fast to ready - the shot may have swam away by the time your camera boots up. telephoto zoom. Good glass is critical. blur from shaking - use a monopod. Waterproof! jiggy
  9. Best Wishes. Let's cherish the time we have.
  10. And I thought you were talking about P _ _ _ _ enlargement.
  11. Awesome. Gets me itching for an Algonquin trip. I have never gone yet. Hoping to go this fall. Can I ask which outfitter you used? Sleepjigging PM sent
  12. Do you use 93 octane gas? The stuff from Shell has no Ethanol.
  13. I second the " Chris Brock Backlakes Mapbook". Maybe exclusive to OFC Sleepy
  14. Anyone notice the natural erosion of the rock on the foreground. In the painting, there is a little sappling growing there, but the crack is small. The photo shows the ice had forced the little crack into a big fissure. How old is that painting?
  15. I used clear cedar for gunwales on my homemade pirogue canoe. Fairbank lumber. 16ft lengths. screws and gorilla glue to wood.
  16. I use the Humminbird Pirahnamax 170 for all year. DualBeam 20/60 degrees. 4" screen is Black and white, but lasts for the ice season with 1 charge on a 12V 7Ah battery - fishing 5 hours every week. I have used it for KempBay down to 80'. I just haven't had the chance to deeper. Now considering an upgrade, but have found that I still own the best B/W unit. $110 at BassPro. Good Color units start over $300. They all show fish/structure. Color is just prettier, but chews through batteries. Jiggy
  17. I got a CLAM TWIN HUB II from CanadianTires on Boxing day. Got it home. Opened it up on the drive way. Closed/opened a couple of times to practice. The bottom metal tubes pokes through the fabric on 2 corners. I know these things are not well made (previous posts). The prices is low ($120+tax). You get what you paid for. Now, do I just return it and forget about it, (it's not in the budget for a better one), or just MacGuyver a solution? Sleepjigging
  18. Your Omemee lake does not sound like the area around south of Pigeon Lake. Beaver dam, 4" ice along a river. Googled for Omemee Lake and found nothing. Is the Kwarthas frozen over? Sleepjigging
  19. I think the estimate on the number of GOOD children is way off.
  20. I started this thread when I read about the conditions in Timmins. But it's a little far. North Bay sounds better. I am in Toronto, and it's like +7C degrees for the week. I haven't even put on the winter tires yet. It feels warmer than last year.
  21. I am hoping someone can lead an expedition to a back lake up North where we can do some ice fishing. Share gas/expenses. Anyone else chomping at the bits? Sleepjigging
  22. Starting tomorrow Eskimo Fatfish 767 $249 at CTC compare: $209 GanderMTN or Cabela's but add gas and tax exemption $200 if over 24hr stay in US; or Quickfish2 $205 Lebarons This is on my Christmas list (if a certain someone is reading.) Sleepy
  23. Thank you very much everyone. I'll stick to a small aluminum boat with a 9.9HP outboard. (If I buy.) I like the second option. I'll get my relative to buy one: If you have a buddy or a relative that takes you along in his boat then go for it! Don't even give ownership another thought! Be generous with him. Pay for the gas and oil, pay for launching, buy lunch, provide the drinks. If he refuses compensation still be generous, break open the piggy bank and give him some usefull gifts anything would be appreciated in the long run! Open up the wallet and be giving! It is much better than ownership and cheaper too! The worst that can happen from this is an invite the next time. Sleepjigging (hope to be SleepTrolling)
