  1. I'm a bit confused because the names dont seem to be universal... When you say "mink" do you mean the one in the picture I posted (the ermine) or do you mean the semi-aquatic brown ones that are bigger? I can't imagine mink would be this far up from the river 0.5 kms. Pretty crazy to think the ermine would lift 9 - 4lbs rabbits up a spruce tree then over the fence and then out of sight. He's so small
  2. DEFINITLY MICE! I ripped out my headliner, it was a ffffffff mess in that thing. I could still catch 4+ per week in the one vehicle if I kept setting traps. Unbelievable. I pulled 5 dead ones and 4 live ones that day. Look at the pictures. there's no way it was the ermine that got my rabbits. They were nearly 4lbs and whatever killed them dragged 9 of them over a 4ft fence. Only the fat 15lbs mom was left dead and decapitated inside the pen. That had to be a fisher or pine marten, or fox. Isn't a mink semi-aquatic? I saw one at my river just the other day. The only other place I've seen them is along the rocks at the Barrie waterfront.
  3. They are everywhere here. I see their tracks all the time.
  4. That's awesome Dan. I had an outdoor cat for one day before it ran away and never saw it again. Meanwhile you guys manage to use a pet ferret to catch dinner in the wild and somehow not lose it on the first try. Did the ferret look almost exactly like the ermine in my picture? They are about the same size aren't they?
  5. Guys around here claim they are good to have around the house because they eat squirrels and mice and (apparently) don't cause damage. I have a mouse issue (my vehicles) like you wouldn't believe so I hope they are right. Now, for the 10 rabbits I lost to some predator this year, I figured it was a fisher, but I wouldnt trust these guys either.
  6. Caught it crawling around atv's today. Up until a few weeks ago I called it a mink, but then I saw a real mink swimming in my river... apparently this is an ermine or stoat, but many people call it a weasel.
  7. Trash pandas haha never heard that saying. I shot and ate one this year. No where near a landfill and was a true bush specimen. It was actually pretty good.
  8. Expensive nap haha 5 or so years ago, I drove out on Nipissing a few kms early in the season (prob mid January) looking for my hotspot and started drilling a few holes looking for depth. I was off my location , so I jumped back in the truck, door open, foot hanging out and proceeded to reverse for a few metres without looking behind me where I was going. Then, my back two wheels drop down. Fast and hard! Still in reverse I jump out over a 2 foot wide pressure crack and have a couple heart attacks as I wait for my truck to drop to the abyss, and try to remember the wording of my insurance policy. Nothing happened. It stayed still. Two rear wheels mostly submerged and frame dragging on the ice. I looked around and saw that the crack was flat (as in, not upheaved ice, no 'tombstones'). I decide to jump back in, 4x4 on, hammered the gas forward and I still can't believe it, but that Mazda pulled itself out. I panicked at the thought of driving back 6+ kms in my mental state and mused to myself "if you leave now, you'll never come back". So I drilled holes, fished all day, caught a bunch of pickerel and learned this lesson : simply look where you are driving, idiot.
  9. That's a fisher cat... although it's not really a cat, I believe it is in the weasel family. Seen a lot of them this year. They especially look cool when walking/running, they have a weird "slinkiness" to them. I had one cross my stand earlier this year and at first blush I thought it was a badger... big animal! That was fox nosing a skunks rear, for whatever masochistic reason haha. The wolves/brush wolves are awesome looking dogs! Real elusive too; in probably 40-50hrs in stand/ground/walking I never encountered a single one. Thanks!
  10. From my property 2017. Feel free to add to thread.
  11. I'd also guess upwards of 40lbs on a big doe.
  12. Yeah, I was talking about pre-field dressed weight. I bet my wife would like to report her field-dressed weight too (it's ok, she doesn't read OFC)
  13. Not that irregular up here. I saw one hanging this year.
  14. Impressive fish Joey. I shared that pic with a few people.. nothing but thumbs up, especially from the local trouters.
  15. Pickeral are mainly catch and release, but there is a real good variety of fish to be caught for a fry : lake herring (biggest you'll ever see), pike, whitefish, tons of perch, ling. I also agree with fishing the main lake not Callander Bay
  16. I got a button buck. Used up my doe tag. This guy has been haunting my dreams...That day time photo was yesterday morning.
  17. You got life figured out man. Nice report. Happy looking bunch of people.
  18. I shot and ate a racoon the other day. It was rabid good.
  19. No birds around North Bay... stay away. Yeah, lots of crown land up here, lots of hunters too.
  20. Is that your guide holding the fish in the leading picture? I went to college with that guy... always figured he'd be a fishing guide or something, definitely a true, caring angler.
  21. You think that's bad? 2 or 3 tags available here in zone 11 (North Bay area). I have no idea how healthy the population actually is, but I have at least 4 moose in close proximity to my property at any given time. Mention to the MNR how good the moose hunting is Quebec, and they'll say "oh Quebec has big problems too".... yeah, all the Ontario hunters are going over there because we lost our moose hunt! Then I hear about night hunting with flood lights and multiple kills on the local reserve(s). I don't know if the rednecks or non-native locals are poaching yet. I can only imagine that'll happen too. I've never seen so many rabbits this year and they cut off the spring season, but they extended partridge season and the deer lottery seems too low as well.
  22. The trout unlimited article sucks. Plus he spelled "Ottowa" wrong. Just because AP looks huge, from your computer screen in Idaho, not all of it is inaccessible, or true 'wilderness', plus that's not event the point, that was just his lazy point. The Algonquin natives net some lakes, and this lake would certainly get an influx of visitors were it's name released. Maybe Mike and his son agreed to keep the lake's name a secret... let's see, keep a promise to your son, or try your darnedest to not offend some deep trout thinkers?? hmmm?? Chris Hunt sounds like an elite-elitist. Taking someone else's point only to make a lackluster point of his own wasn't very inspiring. Or maybe I'm getting all riled up for nothing... hahaha, this is why I try to avoid comment sections and msg boards
  23. Many of those lakes have decent walleye. Don't expect amazing results unless you get lucky, or conditions are perfect. Use Fishonline to find lakes with Walleye in them, no shortage of smaller lakes with pickeral near Marten River... the pike and bass only lakes can be quite fun as well.
  24. FOI request for a fishing spot? hahaha what a loser. Where are the talented hackers when we need them, infect buddy's computer please. Sorry Mike has to go through this, I'd be receding into the darkness after crap like this. Best of luck Mike! Hope everything turns out in your favour!
