That is so cool (pardon the pun)! Great tip I never heard of nor would I have thought of it! WTG for Wayne and Brian both! Michael -
Maybe late but it was winter here today NF

Grabbed groceries on the way home yesterday as the main point of a very crafty and well thought out plan of action to address this cold spell. Looked out the window early this morning and again just a moment ago, saw lots of new snow, and not very many portable huts at all out there (usually see lots by now!). From this I have determined that the plan so far is well supported and born out by the weather forecast actually being pretty darn close. Seeing one's plans actually working is quite satisfying. Oh, the plan you ask? It was a very intense and detailed effort designed to maximize my personal comfort, ensure my surviveability, and guarantee that I'll have no worries. It also addresses the fact that I am STILL recovering from the accident back in August and don't have full use of my right arm yet, so I don't need or want to put myself in any situation that would require full use if needed. I am hibernating until Tuesday when I go back to school. Not going out, not even opening a door! Yup - the wimp in me is a survivalist fer sure! For those of you venturing out please be safety conscious - I wanna talk TO ya not ABOUT ya! Michael -

Whiteouts gotta be about the most scary winter experience! Not only are the roads slick and unpredictable (as are the rest of the vehicles) now the element of being able to see is removed - yuck! If I don't gotta be out in it I ain't out in it. But of course there'll be times when choice ain't an option, they can blow in while you're not at home etc. I guess I do what most would - slow down and keep back from anyone in front of me, find a parking lot (hopefully with a restaurant in it!), pull over or find a sidestreet if no parking lot and it's possible, make sure the headlights are on (not just the daytimers) and in all instances hope ta heck it blows over quick! Might make me sound wimpy but guess what? I'm still around to sound wimpy! Michael -
For what ever reasons DESTINY may have decided this poor soul's time had come and FATE crossed his path, it has happened and it is indeed very unfortunate. When I posted about this sad event this morning it was with a plea to ALL to be safe out there, with the intent of "out there" being wherever one may be. It is often so easy to have 20/20 hindsight and dissect the actions as well as question the abilities of others after the fact. Let us NOT descend into what might be called by some as "bashing". Let us instead offer our prayers and condolences to those who have lost a loved one WITHOUT recrimination for what may have preceded the event. We should sharpen our wits to ensure our own safety and not our tongues to rebuke those who paid the ultimate price. Mods - please delete or lock before we get lost here - the intention I had was merely to reinforce the thought of keeping safe foremost in our minds, we seem to be drifting far away from that goal. Michael

Let's be safe out there folks! According to City news a 60 year old man on an ATV out from Virginia Beach went thru the ice. Body was recovered by police last night. I'd post a link but it's time for a new computer I guess... Michael

In the past I've kept them in the fridge for better than a week at a time, in a minnow bucket. Toss in an ice cube once in a while (daily) - as it melts (slowly) it adds oxygen. I live alone so no screaming about it ha ha! Michael

You must not have used a hut then - didn't see any along that area you describe anyhow. I saw yer sled tracks leaving the trucks and figured I had about 50/50 chance of picking the right one, along with not thinking you had a 4x4 for some reason. From what you say I don't think you quite came far enough - with the binos I can see the crack you describe, and it would be past that a bit more. The ones I can really see are much further along than that, they'd be past where I suggested. Maybe next time! Michael

So I picked the right truck after all - cool! Sorry to hear no luck - it happens. Couldn't really see you out there unless that was you right on shore almost (doubt it). Noticed a couple ridges up this end, one obviously very wet with the new snow really showing it. Watched two guys walk out from the west shore only to turn back to shore to head south around the wet line at shore before coming back out, so I guess they didn't find it safe enough to cross. Not as many out there today as last week it seems. Michael

It may not be the majority of users experience, in fact most may have no problems such as I've read above and good for those of you that have successfully upgraded to 10 with no problems. New operating systems and software/applications always sound great and generate a lot of excitement when they're first released, but there's usually a period where they may not be all they're cracked up to be until enough errors are reported to generate updates with fixes... This is just one of many horror stories out there but one I have first hand knowledge of ... Google "windows10 start icon not working" to see one of the big problems currently plaguing Microsoft, and also look at the possible fixes. I have a new laptop with windows 7, states it's windows 10 compatible, that is part of the courses I'm currently taking. Another fellow in the class with the identical setup, who knows zilch about computers (it's his first exposure to them) upgraded to 10 when the (frequent) popup adivsed him to because he figured the computer was telling him to do it. Within 3 days his start icon stopped working, effectively making the laptop unusable at all. I spent about 3 hours trying all the recommended fixes with a service tech on the phone to guide me, my laptop displaying all the commands to try, none worked. Why? becausue all the fixes require an internet connection working on the affected computer, and there ain't no way to tell if you're connected when this happens until the effort fails. Fortunately for the other guy, the company that supplied our laptops also took the time to create system backups on cd's so he could do a full restore. Once I determined it was a waste of time to keep trying to fix Windows 10, I told him good luck, call the tech, do the restore with him, ya don't need me!, and went back to learning other stuff listening to him swearing about the long boring process, put the disc in, take the disc out... etc. I don't know, because the other user can't tell me, if there were any updates done to his Windows 10 AFTER he installed it. It could well be that a fix is already available but as I've already made my mind up I'm not gonna worry about it just yet. I'll do the windows 10 at the last possible moment and hope they have all the bugs fixed by then... Michael

Uh-oh - I better run out and plug that long extension cord back in - didn't know what it was for, sorry! Michael

No Timmy's 'round here Bud! As fer walking out - only if I can borrow a snowmobile from the neighbour ha ha! Appreciate the invite but I'm having enough trouble with the recuperatin' without risking discombobulatin' the situation by slipping and falling - 'cause ya know I'd only land with maximum impact on the previously impacted by a wall area of current disablement. But ya never know - tomorrow's another day! (nice cliffhanger eh?) Michael (ps - another guy says whities now too! only that was 12 yrs ago)

My experience with cracking ice is that it's either good or bad...Good if the ice is forming although it can result in pressure ridges, and bad if, well, if it's deteriorating and that's someplace ya don't wanna be when it's happening. From what I've seen the last two days - subject to you verifying for yourself - the ice is forming again although I also think the lake level has risen a bit again too. Glad you had a good day, caught fish and are able to tell about it! Welcome to the board! Michael

Chad I wouldn't put it past the insurance company to use that "No" to deny a claim if it ever came up - just a thought that you may want to check into. I'm sure they're aware you have wood burning equipment by the nature of the questionaire, but y'all have probably heard as much as me or the next guy about how they'll do anything to avoid paying! If you've already checked this - cool! Just keeping my eyes out fer ya pal! Michael -

Might be pulling the trigger a tad early, I'd give it another week or two, it's been a weird winter for sure and who's to say it won't get weirder (read fiercer!). Hope it gets better soon for you, there's still time... Michael

I'd get another opinion from any wett certified inspector before doing anything (including lighting it up!) Michael -

He said the guys who do it as a BUSINESS have to pay taxes, meaning not all burned wood is tax free. The whole post is about burning in the downtown core of Montreal - so there's probably few if any private harvestable woodlots to be utilized there (tongue in cheek), suggesting that wood comes from commercial interests. Besides all that - the article was more towards the appliance side - meaning a certain type of wood burning stove was required in order to be allowed usage in Montreal, not about the wood fuel itself. Taxes on the up to 9 grand suggested in the article for the appliance retrofit sure would be a chunk more than a bush cord or two of wood a season. Michael -

Yup I'd imagine it is Dave. More of a remote location than Montreal though - and a long history of being more dependent on natural resources for survival than the average urban dweller. American too, though not sure that's a big impact. Like I said, I can see some of what the restriction is about, I don't agree with it being top on the list to go after but I can see why they are - it's just simply the easiest in spite of how incredibly silly they may end up looking- think long gun registry and all it's GOOD intentions being pursued, no matter what the cost was... And I'm sure every one of the businesses that will be putting in the new style stoves has lined up to complain about it too... I'm also sure government sanity will appear one day - ain't got a whole lotta hope I'll still be kickin' when it does though! Michael -

I got the idea this was a municipal by law for Montreal in PQ. In hi-density URBAN zones it may be an appropriate approach, not one I'd agree with either but I can see the other side of the argument. If it wasn't controlled to some degree can you just imagine apartment windows getting knocked out to put out a chimney, or one townhouse smoking out adjacent ones? Extreme maybe, but certainly possible. As for the "pollutant factor", when coupled with the already higher degree (concentrations) of pollutants being produced due to the denser population from all sources, it seems to be a situation of "let's go after the easiest one first before we take on the ones that REALLY impact the air quality" (and lines the coffers with income from outrageous taxes hidden or otherwise)! In rural, suburban or remote (especially off grid) locations there should be a little (LOT) of temperance in approaching any restriction of this kind. I wouldn't worry about it too much yet unless you're in a very high density downtown core heating with a woodstove. Maybe next year... Michael -
Delay was pregnancy related? Didn't we just used to call it a nooner? Good looking setup on the sled, like how the joinery was done especially keeping the thin profile above the ski. Michael
