Was glad I was able to make it Joey. You have been kind to us...and many other members of this board...and a big part of why this is a community. Wish our meeting again was under different circumstances, but we'll see you and Paul again... Take care, Cliff and Carole.

We gave the pike to Fishnsled...who we saw on the water. He took his dad fishing for his birthday...so as a little present, we handed it over. You did give it to him...right Will?? LOL. -

Why does it seem I can only catch these this year???
ccmtcanada posted a topic in General Discussion
So...in the past, I've had pretty good luck catching the fish that we head out to target...but for some reason, I've noticed a pattern this year... I go Bass fishing and catch this... I go Salmon fishing and I catch this.... And today, we went out fall Muskie fishing...figuring to get into some nice Kawartha Muskie...and you guessed it...I caught this. In a lake where there are a lot more muskie... That pike is now headed to the dinner table... Didn't even see a Muskie today...no follows, no missed hits, no nothing... Oh well, there will be at least a few more fall muskie trips in the next month...hopefully, I can STOP catching Pike!!!! -

Help with Motorguide Remote Control Trolling Motor
ccmtcanada replied to ccmtcanada's topic in General Discussion
Thanks! We've already tried Motorguide's number, but they are not open til Monday...as well as a few other "dealers", but no one seems to be open. Will give this a try. -
We have a 41 lb thrust Motorguide remote control trolling motor on our boat (Modeal 370RF)...and the wireless foot pedal is sometimes hard to operate. We had heard there was a "universal" hand held key fob remote control and we were intrigued, so we went and got one. Problem is, we cant seem to get it to work. The instructions say to plug in the trolling motor so it has power, then push and hold the + and - buttons on the key fob. We should hear a long beep to confirm that the trolling motor receiver has 'registered' the new remote. Thing is, we've never heard the trolling motor ever make any sound before...and doing these steps was no different. We know it's not registered as the remote does nothing to operate the motor. We did replace the battery in the remote...I wish it had an LED light to show that when you press a button it was actually working. If anyone has any ideas out there please let me know! Thanks. Here's a picture of the remote...

Hey now...we were targeting Pike...how did she outfish me?? LOL. -
Friday was a very busy day for me. My flight took off from Beirut, Lebanon at just past midnight...early Friday morning Toronto time. I was in Switzerland by 4am...then onto Montreal and finally Toronto. I landed at 5pm and finally got home around 7pm. To say I was a little tired is a bit of an understatement! Anyhow, after a good night's sleep Friday, I was itching to get out and do some fishing...but the weather forecast wasn't looking all that great. Small craft advisory for the evening...windy...rain...but all afternoon long, it held off. We decided to launch in a local harbour, hopefully protected from the winds...and see what we could tease. We were on the water by 5pm...looking for some Salmon that may be in the area. The fish finder was marking all kinds of fish, but we couldn't entice many hits, but we did manage a few fish. Trolling along in 8 to 10 feet of water, I felt a hit! It wasn't a salmon, but it was giving some pretty good headshakes. Turns out it was an ok sized pike...not very long, but had some girth on it...this one had been busy gorging for the fall/winter! The most interesting thing about this one was the blue tinge to it...especially in and around the mouth...here's a few pictures. The winds and rain did pick up...so trolling got very difficult...so we decided to set up drifts...still hoping to see a salmon. About a half hour before we were going to call it a night, Bly yells "Fish On!". This one peeled line....so we knew it was what we were looking for. A 10 minute fight bringing it back in and she landed a nice 38", 19 pound salmon. Who knows...maybe we'll try again tonight, since I took Monday off to "recover from jet lag" from my business trip.

Joey...very sorry to hear of this news. When I saw that report with your dad, it brought back great memories of the last fishing trip I took with my own father before he passed away. You will have that, and many other wonderful memories forever. Our deepest sympathies.... Cliff and Carole

Fishing in Beirut, Lebanon! Lots of pics...
ccmtcanada replied to ccmtcanada's topic in General Discussion
Thanks everyone! If I had more time to research and get to know some of the charters in the area, I'm sure it would have been a better kind of outing, but to be honest, I still had a great time out there. I just needed to get out of the hotel room, and a cruise on the Mediterranean did the trick! If I get sent back here for work again, I'll know more...and look into more places...as it was, the one I found was the only outfit I could actually find on the internet for the area. I have seen more fishing clubs and charters since I've been here though... Back in Canada Friday evening...going to be good to be home again. -
Carole has been keeping me updated Wayne...you needed a week just like that!!! Glad to hear you had a great time and it was just what you needed...been a tough summer for you and Leah...

I am typing this report from Beirut, Lebanon...I fly back home to Canada on Friday. The first time I came here I didn't have any spare time as work took up every moment. This time however I had a weekend with nothing to do, so of course the first thing I did was look up fishing charters in the area. I found one on the web...a charter outfit with the Dbaye Fishing Club. My day started out at 530 am, when a taxi was to take me to the marina where they are located. It's always interesting trying to communicate with the locals here...especially if they don't speak English. Anyhow, the driver had no idea where the marina was, so he pulled over a few times to ask directions. A few times he stopped and asked the military who were stationed along the streets. It's a little un-nerving having someone armed with a semi automatic weapon lean inside the cab to talk. Eventually we found our way, and I was greeted by my captain for the day. After some traditional Lebanese coffee, we headed out to the boat. They have all new center console boats...with some serious motors attached to them. Here's a pic... As we pulled out of the marina, the sun was just coming up...an amazing sight...seeing the sun come up over the mountains of Lebanon. As the sun came up, it was apparent that shore fishing is alive and strong in this coastal Mediterranean community. There was a little mis-communication in what fish I wanted to target. I wanted what they call King fish (Tuna) or Jackfish...some strong fighting fish that are in the 10 to 20 pound range. After seeing the setup my captain was giving me (light gear), I questioned him. He said that to get those fish, you had to fish at night. I was a little annoyed, but decided to make the best out of my situation. As it turned out, I was fortunate because for the first time in a few months, they had rain...and a lot of it...and yes at night. Rain I can deal with...it's always warm here (overnight temps of 25C), but what ended up happening was Thunderstorms Friday and Saturday night...pretty much all night long. If I had my charter booked one of those nights, they would have been cancelled! Anyhow, on to the fish. I felt like I was fishing out the tropical fish tanks at most pet stores in my area! Great looking fish...all panfish sized...in an array of colours and shapes. I basically bottom fished...using shrimp as bait on smaller hooks. All the fish were caugh fairly deep to...in about 40 to 60 feet of water. The only fish I recognized was a puffer fish. I went to take it off the hook when suddenly it expanded! It was pretty cool to see. Didn't get a picture of it in that state, but here it is... I asked the captain what all the other fish were, but he gave me the Arabic names...and I gave up trying to memorize them...lol. Here are the pictures.... I even managed to spot a jellyfish...the first time I've ever seen one up close like this. I thought I was fishing locally...at first it looked like a clear plastic bag...LOL. It's a great area to fish...the scenery is pretty amazing. I had to remind myself that I was actually the Mediterranean Sea!! You can make out a statue at the top of the mountain in the distance here. It's called "Our Lady of Lebanon"...and huge statue of the Virgin Mary, put in place by the French in the early 1900's. All in all, it's a pretty amazing place to fish. The scenery is amazing, and the fish you can catch are unlike any species from Ontario. If I get sent back here in the future, I'll book a trip at night...and go for these guys...the fish I was hoping to get!
-
This time I hope to have a fishing report! I'm being sent back for work...but will be there over a weekend this time. I've looked into fishing charters and will be booking one as soon as I land. They have assured me they have lots of space left. We'll be targeting Amberjacks in the Mediterranean Sea. Good fishing everyone! I'll be following the board from overseas...

KINSHASA (AFP) - A hippopotamus killed a member of Democratic Republic of Congo government forces at Virunga National Park while he was fishing illegally, a local environmental NGO said Saturday. Bantu Lukamba of the IDPE non-governmental organisation told AFP that Private Sebagendi was killed Thursday when he was fishing along with five other people on Lake Edward in spite of a fishing ban. "As he could not swim he was devoured by the hippo which had earlier overturned their boat," he said adding that the incident was the first of its kind in the park which covers an area of 790,000 hectares (1.95 million acres). Usually, "they (the military) shoot at the animals," he said. According to UNESCO the park which borders Uganda comprises an outstanding diversity of habitats, ranging from swamps and steppes to the snowfields of Rwenzori at an altitude of over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), and from lava plains to savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. Mountain gorillas are found in the park, some 20,000 hippopotamuses live in the rivers and birds from Siberia spend the winter there, the United Nations cultural organisation said on its website. IDPE said "at least 18 animals including seven elephants, four hippopotamuses and a lion were killed in the park between late August and early September".
