Awesome pic Mike. Ah the 90's. What fun times.

One that stands out among the rest: I was 13 years old at the time (May of 1989). My mom and dad wanted to take my sister and I fishing for the day. We fished a local pond with nothing to show for it. On the way home we noticed a little creek running under the highway. We decided to give it a shot. Armed with cheapy rod/reels and corn we fished this little 'ditch' for about 30 minutes when my mom hooks into a 10 pound rainbow trout. She actually landed it and we all lost our minds. 15 minutes later I land a 7 pound rainbow and lose my mind all over again! The next day we found out that the local trout farm had flooded and this tiny creek ran right behind it resulting in a bunch of farmed fish making it in there. Me and a couple other friends fished it for the next year and a half almost always landing 3 or 4 beautiful fish. This all went down just outside the small town of Scotland Ont. along Hwy 24. I think the trout farm was called P.J.'s. I've been hooked ever since!

I've seen them spawning as late as the last week of June. Prime months are July and August when the sun is high and the temps are HOT!

Started off pretty rough but a coffee, bacon, toast, 2 pain killers and 10 bottles of water took care of that.

Fidel and I decided to focus more on camping out in search of a good time and to not put too much pressure on connecting with Steel. Yes, it was a possibility to get into a few but this destination can be difficult for drop backs but did provide other critters. The Set Up Vast Exploration Cats On The Pin As expected, we didn't hook into any Steel. The count in the end though was a mixed bag. 5 Channel Cats 3 OOS Walleye 2 OOS Smallies 1 Rock Bass 1 Mooneye The rain held off just enough to still be able to chill around the fire with a few drinks, good food and some sweet tunes!

MEGA-FASTFORWARD ULTRA SPEED!!!

Thanks ADB. I wish I could take her fishing with me but her fetch instinct is out of control. As soon as I cast she goes after my bait unless I have her tied to my waste.

The clouds had past and the sun exposed itself so I decided to go for a bike ride with Ida. Naturally she was game. It doesn't take much to get her pumped! I can see why some people worship this. You can actually see it. That usually helps with the credability. Destination. And off we went. I wish these waters actually had fish in them. Well, they do have sucker, carp, catfish and chub but even those are limited due to very poor water quality. I wonder what this river looked like in the 1800's??? Evidence of lurking eyes peeping around dark corners. I could probably leave Ida like this hovering over a ground hog hole forever. She simply cannot let it go. This just drives me mad. Sure there's no garbage can at the bus stop but that's still no excuse for dumping all your crap into the ravine. Is it so hard to hold on to it for just a bit longer. A few more shots... One happy dog Thanks for reading. Laz

Wait till you get an energenic fish in the 5lbs plus range. SO MUCH FUN!

Mepps Silver Aglia with hooks dressed (all sizes) have caught me tons of fish over the years.

Thanks for the reminder of what's to come summer time. I've been so consumed with fishing for Steel I almost forgot. Smallies + Lite Gear = AMAZING!

Thanks. That wallis cast is tough. I have to keep at it. I have one swivel above the float and another below between my mono and flouro leader.

Nicely done man. We need to catch up during our next mission. Bring on the camp out for opener!!!

Thanks. I wish that thread was still alive. I would have kept it going.

It all started off a little rough. First, the Wallis cast wasn't getting my bait far enough to reach the right spot in the run. Next, my reel looks like a rocker chicks bangs from the 80's :/ Fixed that problem realizing I need to pay more attention to the reel during the cast. I ended up putting a micro swivel above my float and resorted to the side cast. (thanks for the tip BillM, worked out great) A couple floats later and... It was the only fish I landed this morning as the session ended going 1/4. One may have been a sucker by the way it faught and I did lose one big fish. Some adjustments are needed for sure. eg: Don't grab the handles right after the hook set. Spinning reels have me accustomed to this. My other catch for the day was a massive... Thanks for reading. Till next time.

Steelheading Hip Hop. LOL! Beautiful fish though. I didn't know drop backs were that bright. After all...it is my first spring fishing for Steel.

Another great report MJL! The location, fish, pics and water all look fantastic. Spring rules! My attempt at my first Steel on the pin begins tomorrow morning at 7am. I'll take this post as my good omen.

Can anyone confirm that lifting will be going down today at 5pm. Anyone going?

Only had a half hour of free time this morning so I practised in the river behind my place again. Once again the side cast no problems. The Wallis cast is slowly improving... Now on to Tues. morning to fish a river for more then 30 minutes that actually has fish in it or Steelhead to be more specific.

If you could permanently move to one area for the sake of fishing...

I would stay exactly where I am. The beautiful, highly abused Humber River is right behind my place. (Over 700 chemical and oil spills in the last 9 years) Lake Ontario just a short 15 minute drive away. (Yet I would never eat a fish from it) For real now...North West Ontario would have to be my choice. -
I just came back from practising in the river behind my place. I can see why many use the side cast as it came to me pretty easily. The wallis cast...hmmm...not so much. I will stick with it because I really don't want to deal with the line twisting. I wasn't able to get it more then 10 feet in front of me and my aim seemed to always land way to the right. I retrieve with my left and hold the rod with my right. Any pointers would be great. Thanks

Myagi...that's a lot of pressure to live up to. I hope your right! That day might be Mon. or Tues. morning when the river comes down.

For me it's just another method to expand upon. My spinning set up will still have it's use as well. In the early fall when the fish are very active, tossing spinners in mid-depth riffle water can be deadly as I learned last year. Plus...when they take it feels like they want to rip your arm off. Also, not too sure how much of an elitest I can look like while fumbling around trying to figure out how to cast :/ I may need your help bud.
