I live in North Etobicoke right behind Humber College. Yesterday morning I was walking my dog and saw two pretty big, confident bucs. They stood there for about 30 seconds (20 yards away) and slowly walked off.

I went to JB's Fishing Depot today. What a difference dealing with people who love fishing, giving good service and helping people out. Rod of choice: Raven 13' 6" 3pc IM-6 Should be in by Friday and ready to put to use next week. Also took a look at some Center Pins. Next spring I'll deal with that beast. Probably get an Islander of some sort. I will report back after my first try at it.

19.5 inch Smallie caught in July. I'm guessing 4lbs (up for debate)

I just came back from Bass Pro Shop. It was busy, I couldn't get help and the rod selection looked a little lacking. I plan on going back on a weekday to buy a 13ft rod and some accessories.

This fall is the first time I've attempted targetting Steelhead. Starting off with little knowledge has had many factors working against me. This has led to 3 outings that have produced ZERO fish. Gear: 6 foot Medium Action Spinning Rod. 10 lb Mono Line Big Float Big Hook What more could I be doing wrong??? In the next week I plan on buying a 13' Float Rod and will be using my spinning reel for now and purchasing a Center Pin next Spring. Got some small trout hooks. I re-spooled my reel with 8 lb 100% Flourocarbon. Plan on buying some smaller slip floats. Now I just need to get out to understand reading the water to determine where fish are holding. Regardless of success, I'll be reporting back after every outing. Let's hope this leads to posts with lots of pics.

thanks guys. appreciate all the info.

My self made rule: Must drive a 'minimum' of 45 minutes away from the GTA 9 out of 10 times I fish.

I think reading the water may be the issue. Fishing for resident bow's and brown's in smaller rivers and tribs I find easy. The shallow water spilling into the deeper pools are so visable you can't go wrong. It's when the water is generally moving at the same speed in slightly deeper water (5 to 10 feet) that my problem begins. So far I've targetted bends and slight changes in water movement. Just need more time to figure it out.

This is the first year that I'm targetting Steelhead. So far I've been out 3 times and have landed or hooked a massive total of ZERO fish. This is only driving my will to continue and making for a very rewarding first fish. My question goes out to all the hardcore Steelheaders out there eg: Solopaddler, Dave M, Stonefly etc. When you started, did it take a bit of time to get over the learning curve? The reason I ask is that so many people say that Steelhead will bite just about anything. So far I've being mostly using a float with a couple split shot weights and a small hook. As for bait: Gulp Alive Pink Trout Worms, Roe, Worms, Pink Hair Jigs, Small Tubes and #1 Mepps Spinners. I think the presentation is ok but maybe the timing is off???

For me it was when I was 11 years old living in a very small town (Scotland Ontario) with very little to do. My best friend at the time Chris and I would ride our bikes around finding endless ponds, lakes, rivers and creeks. For 3 summers we fished almost everyday. Eventually I stepped away from fishing to discover new things but over the last 5 years the passion has come back and I'm loving every moment. Now I just have to learn how to fish for Steelhead. Let's just say it's been a bit of a struggle but I still have plenty of fight left in me. Believe me, all of you will know when I have success (a report will quickly follow).

like few hate many must have something to do with really bad guitar solo music in the background.

I too was considering getting a set up next spring. Am I crazy to think I can buy a decent set up for $400.00 (rod & reel)? The only thing holding me back is my negative association with shoulder to shoulder fishing. I really love being one of few guys on a river or lake.

when mentioning a 'small creek' in a 'small town', that would seem pretty specific to me. splashhopper - i got your back all the way on this one for sure.

Went fishing, got skunked, so I through my gear in the trunk and went for a hike. Salmon everywhere. This fish was on the bank still alive so I took a couple pics of it's crazy teeth and pushed it back in the water. It swam away but was surely down to it's last few minutes of existance. Dead salmon all over the place with plenty live ones still spawning. Glad to report that I didn't see anyone snagging today. Must admit that salmon fishing in the river is really not my thing. Maybe that's just because I suck at it. Later Laz

love it! a couple weeks ago i was down there at the old mill and saw two guys fishing right at the dam. both were wading in the water wearing jeans and work boots. naturally their jeans were soaked. the one was using a spoon with a massive treble hook and what looked like a 4 1/2 foot ultra light rod. as one salmon was approaching the pool before the dam in the shallow rocky area he went after it looking as if he was about to lose his mind. the salmon got by as he tried to snag it and he fell in the water. i then laughed really hard.

Way to go! I've ran a half marathon once before. I wasn't too over weight but the training and the race itself got me from 195lbs down to 177lbs and I've kept that weight ever since. The race was 3 years ago and it was the Scotiabank Toronto Lakeshore Marathon. The race day itself is something to remember for the rest of your life. You'll be pumped...trust me. Just remember to pace yourself and not let the hype make you run way to fast and hurt yourself. Some of the best things I've ever done in my life that brought huge rewards are: 1) Quit Smoking 2) Start Running 3) Learn To Cook Tasty FRESH Meals Oh...can't forget spending time in the outdoors!!!

My entire life I've been using 10lb mono. Recently I decided to try switching over to fluorcarbon main line instead. This year I fished the rivers a lot more where there are plenty of sticks, logs and rocks to get caught up on or for my line to rub up against. The main line I went with is Seaguar's 10lb AbrazX Main Line. Yes the strength is great and the knots tie very will but my casting distance seems drasticly less and the amount of knots I'm getting are at an all time high. I know I have the right amount of line on my reel so that's not the problem. Even the sound of the line coming off my real as I cast sounds rough. I would say 60% of my fishing is jigging tubes and the rest is just straight reeling in spinners and rapala's. Seems to happen regardless of the method. Any help would be great. I've used it twice now and am already down to half of the line on my spool because of knots. Mono would last me almost an entire summer of fishing once every couple weeks. Not sure if I should switch back to mono or try another brand of fluorocarbon??? Thanks a million. Laszlo

I am going to adopt this as my new line to all posts like this. Thanks Bill. -
Thanks guys. I've been doing the live release shots lately and I think I'm going to do them more often. They seem to turn out nice when showing the fishes face just out of the water. Here are a couple more from this year.

First time for me fishing the river in October. Previous to this year I didn't have waders so the season ended at the end of August. I was hoping for some Steelhead action. Didn't end up hooking any but did see 3 or 4 huge ones surface. Did see another fisherman land a 7 lb female. Total Hours Fishing - 4 Total Fish Landed - 6 Biggest Fish - 16" Smallmouth Bass & 17" Walleye The only picture worthy. I didn't get a pic the 17" Walleye because I was in the middle of the river and only pull the camera out over land or close to it. Overall a good day. That smallie isn't the longest one I've caught in this river but it may have been the heaviest. The pic may not show it well but it had a big belly. Till next week...

Modify the fishing regulations for Ontario from Lake Nipissing all the way down to Lake Erie. 1) Reduce possession limits for every species 2) Add more officers 3) Increase fines for littering 4) IF YOU ARE COMPLETELY CAPABLE OF WORKING AND ARE ON WELFARE THEN YOU MUST JOIN A CLEAN UP PROGRAM FOR YOUR REGION These are the first things that come to mind. This would just be scratching the surface.
