  1. I argue the earlier claim that new houses sound. Some of the $hit I've found in our 8 year old home is ridiculous. Insulation issues, lack of caulking, bare minimums everywhere.... Sure the house doesn't sway in the wind but all this lazyass corner cutting drives me bonkers. One thing to consider if you hope to "get your way" is a bridge loan: acquire the new house earlier, get your renos done right away, move in to what your wife wants. Win win provided you can live up to your end of the bargain.
  2. We were out that way this past weekend as well, only we wish we had snowshoes... Trudging through three foot drifts was a workout! Also skunked on the speck lake. They can be finnicky any season. Sometimes they're on fire, other times you'd think there's nothing in the lake. I've heard much the same as what's suggested -- keep it shallow. Also, it's been advised to stay off the ice or at the bare minimum keep the noise down. Might be a good time to start a fire on shore and enjoy a warm drink.
  3. This lake is on my hit list. Can anyone comment on public access to fishing grounds? I found some info from others telling stories "of way back" which could end up in trespassing in these modern times.
  4. Not meaning to start any trouble but I thought walleye is closed in hali until jan 1st? Edit: disregard -- my misread! Beauty fish.
  5. just a thought, you may want to consider donating them to the University of Toronto library. They collect a ton of old stuff like this and it'd stay as a resource for people many years to come.
  6. Love MEC... They've got some quality stuff there, but like many stores they may have things that seem/are overpriced. Their in-house brand is generally quite good. I bought my fiancee a Goretex paclite jacket this year that was on clearance for $250. Excellent worksmanship. I'd highly recommend their merino wool baselayer stuff. It's nice and thin for the early and late camping seasons when the chill sets in.
  7. Lots of people crazy about fish pictures... I've gotta compliment your choice of music. LOVE the band!!! Keep on rockin!
  8. As a high school teacher, I can't say I disagree with your points. But you present what I find to be an unfortunate exception these days -- good parenting. It's probably just as cliche for the teacher to point the blame on the parents as it is for the parents to point to the teacher, but I can only influence a student for 75 minutes of the day (as well as through the extra curricular activities that I run). After that, it's out of my hands. Keep up the great work, dad. Administrators tell us that parents send us their "very best" to school each day (referring to their kids). Be it bold to say, I question that notion... especially when mom comes in on parent-teacher interview day with her kid sitting beside them, headphones in their ears, laughing when the threat of taking away their video games is proposed.
  9. beauty fish, man! i've got to echo an above comment -- don't feed the bears. Makes for a great picture, but imagine your son, nephew, grandchild etc. with a bag of chips in cottage country. Not cool.
  10. great folks at that store... i've missed out on sales unknowingly by a matter of a couple of days and had sales prices applied after the fact. the guys (and gals) are very social. any time i'm about to broaden my fishing horizon, they act exactly how you describe -- give me some pointers, feel out my pricepoint, and suggest some lures from firsthand experience in the waters i'm about to fish. The only con I have in going there is that I end up spending too long shooting the breeze with them!
  11. awesome... some in east GTA way up in a white pine. tough to get a good shot of them.
  12. excellent shot... went looking for these guys in my area (east GTA) and a little further east (Presquille) without luck.
  13. fishin' haliburton this weekend?

  14. i called earlier, no answer =/ will give a shot again though. Thanks irish
  15. Anyone have any idea if the bait shop is open tmrw in Minden? Thinking about giving one more kick at the can with the holiday.
  16. For what it's worth, I was pulled over in Washington going about 20 (miles) over while driving with US plates. Myself (Canadian), a Texan, and an Indian from Mumbai -- we were all interns at a tech company down there. Suspicious albeit innocent load of passengers. Anyways, cop lowered the ticket, I paid the fine, never noticed a change to my insurance back in Ontario.
  17. I was under the impression that alcohol was a factor in that incident. It is unfortunate about the lack of acceptance of fishermen. I was told by a cottager not to park on a cottage road up in Haliburton. If I were taking up half the road, sure I can understand that, but we'd parked off the road halfway into a snowy ditch. Too bad.
  18. It's right off 118, brother. Scoot up HWY 28 from Peterborough and hang a left on Dyno Road (careful on this road as it's winding and only sanded in winter, no salt). Take this to the end and make a left on 118. Colbourne Lake (with a 'u') will be immediately on the right. I don't know the access though but explore the cottage roads and you may find something. http://goo.gl/maps/ipmWZ If you can't find access to that, there are some other lakes in the area that might be worth checking out. PM me if you need some access info.
  19. beauty pic... any tips on finding these guys? Owls in general, I mean. Seems you really have to have a particular habitat narrowed down in order to be lucky enough to get a shot.
  20. lol yup that's what our little area looked like... still surprising how strong a few inches can be. not something to be tempted, but impressive. i find the February hardening with its pressure cracks was much more audible, likely suggests that if the ice is gonna go on you in this early season, you won't have much in the way of warning.
  21. cool, glad to hear you got out. we ventured a little further to a stock laker lake. landed about 8 between the 3 of us.
  22. killer walk? you can access it right off of anstruther lake rd (i think that's the name). they've got a beautiful launch right there. unless you mean to suggest that they don't plow that cottage road? my misunderstanding, in any case.
  23. they iced one right off the boat launch as soon as they got there, but dead afterwards. might be worth a shot if your destination doesn't pan out.
  24. personally, no. i've heard of people venturing on Riddell and Loon call lakes. Be safe, fish with a friend!
  25. Bought an x67c off of an OFC member last season and I absolutely love it. No issues with lag or sensitivity -- it's powerful enough for my needs. I recommend pouncing on a good used deal. At a fraction of the cost of the high-end Marcums and Vex's around here, you're going to get a pretty solid bang-for-buck.
