Just a reminder for anybody boating this time of year. Water levels are high here on Pigeon and there’s lots of floating wood and debris out there.. Likely all lakes. . Be careful. Peter
Landed many incidental good muskies with 10 lb Nanofil fishing for eyes.
But if braid gets nicked by teeth, sharp rocks or zebra muscles it fails easily. Always use a fluorocarbon leader. 3-6 ft. To protect against nicks. A wire leader in addition for pike or musky.
I asked a CO at the Sportsman Show as to why the slots are opposite in Balsam compared the rest of the Kawarthas. He didn’t know. I was told before that the MNR didn’t know which way was best so they are experimenting with both.
I had a good year on Pigeon last year. Eyes in all sizes. Nice to see. A real joy to catch a big girl occasionally. Best time for me was June/July. Hope the spawn goes good this year.
Took a drive to the cottage today.
Scugog causeway. No ice. South Pigeon. No ice. Gannon Narrows. No ice. Bridgenorth causeway. Just a bit of wind blow ice. Rest clear. North east Pigeon still iced up. Water levels rising but still 1 ft below summer levels.
I use a Minn Kota drift sock on the bow cleat on one side with a short rope extension. But not too long or it will get to the prop. Steering is challenging as the boat pulls to one side. Just a tip. I’ve wrecked several drift socks by taking off without pulling them in. By the time you notice they’ve ripped apart. ?
Pretty good show. Decent hourly fishing seminars. Picked up a Muskie Rod at the clearance booth for $50. Rapala R-Type. Original price $259. Said it’s a discontinued rod. Crazy mark up on rods it seems. Almost pulled the trigger on a TerraNova electric motor. Gotta measure the boat for shaft length ( old power drive) Good day - ended with nice sovlaki dinner at Zets
