  1. I heard once that a large portion of the these male victims had their fly open when they went over, lost their balance while whizzin over the side, I actually think there is some truth in that or is it one of those urban myths?
  2. Friend's dad had an "Elgin" in the early 60's about 5 horse, pretty sure it was aircooled. Looked identical to the " Eska " brand motors that were advertised in dad's outdoors mags. Probably they made them for Sear's or so we thought.
  3. I'd recommend you get a few of the smaller Hula Poppers or similar spinning sized floating plugs , would essentially be the same thing but with enough weight to cast on your spinning rig.
  4. Great, used one of those once on a square end canoe, good HP for that. The one I used had an integral tank and direct drive, no gear shift, always in gear, you had to be ready when it started cause you were on the move. Sure you will be happy, would move a 12 foot tin not too bad. Glad it turned out OK.
  5. The required lube for the lower end might also be 90 weight hypoid gear oil. Seems to me when I was a kid that what Dad's old green Johnson 5 1/2 used. The oil we mixed with gas was not the hi-tech certified for use at 100:1 ratio stuff, a lot of straight 30wt. got mixed around the farm in various small 2 cycle engines. I would think chain saw grade 2 cycle oil would be ok for this engine at that 16:1 ratio.
  6. Cover looks familiar, probably hidden away in the same box as " The Greening of America " and " The Silent Spring ".
  7. Think that is about 24:1 would depend on whether it is US or Imperial Measure, not the same as more recent motors.
  8. Might be that the gas / oil ratio in the fuel is richer than 50:1 going back that far, anyone have any insight on that??
  9. Surprised no one else has weighed in with an opinion, remember a recent Atlantic ID ?? generated a substantial thread . I would still lean to Atlantic looking at the shape, relatively few spots on the gill cover and a slight fork in the tail.
  10. Nice going Do I see an Atlantic in there??
  11. My favourite technique for top water smallmouth involves the use of a 7 weight fly rod, spun deer hair or balsa bodies and feathery tails. As for striking too soon wait till you see the line move is my way of avoiding setting the hooks too soon. At first light on a small lake smallies can be extremely shallow and even the splat of a 3/8 oz. hula popper will spook them. Good time for the canoe and flyrod .
  12. I second that comment I grew up with " Sports Afield " reading bass articles by Jason Lucas and tying bass flies originated by Dr Henshall.
  13. not for much longer "Return to Canada On June 29, 2009, Tim Hortons Inc. announced that, pending shareholder approval (expected in September), the chain's operations would be reorganized under a new publicly-traded company, also named "Tim Hortons Inc.", incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act. The change is being made primarily for tax purposes. " way cool video , that river looks very familiar????
  14. Very nice fish, I lived in Port Rowan back in the seventies and did a lot of concession hopping with a little blue pamphlet from the Ministry " Trout Fishing in Norfolk County ". Glad to see that the brown fishery is still that good. Maybe I'll take a drive that way with the ultralight before the end of the season.
  15. If it is the same as this knot, it is the only one I use, I use only up eye hooks. http://www.steelheader.net/knots/whip_finish.htm I run a lot of yarn , I just slip it where the skein would go and cinch the knot down tight so the yarn flairs, trim to shape and go fishing. Of course you can put fresh or cured skein in its place. I find I get better hook sets with the line tied to the shank and less tendency for the hook to straighten, so I use this when running roe bags as well and of course the number 1 steelie bait, Dewies.
  16. When I ran a boat trolling Lake Erie and Ontario back in the 80's and 90's, I had a sailboat knotmeter installed. Consisted of a paddle wheel on the stern , next to my tranducer, that generated an electrical current and a gauge ( Voltmeter essentially ) on the dash that read from 0 to 12 knots, I believe it was made be Pelican. There was no power involved unless you wanted to hook up 12 volts for a light at night. I was quite happy with it at the time.
  17. " Lindquist Bros. " may be very old school but caught a ton of fish pulling Canadian Wigglers, lots of nice colours now and walleyes love them.
  18. The best performance in recent history by a Leaf's goalie IMHO was at the end of the 2006 run for a playoff spot by Jean Sebastien Aubin, it was the last time I can say that the goalie consistently single handedly kept them in the game so that a comeback could be made , check his record 11 games , 9 wins , no losses, 2 OTL's for the season. Its was a shame Maurice came onboard and there was friction between the 2 the next season and he was history
  19. Trying to remember when they started the resident fishing licences in Ontario, early 70's I'm guessing. Anyone ???
  20. Toskala would put forth a credible performance for 2 or 3 games and then absolutely stink the place out. Gustavvon will not steal the number 1 spot , Toskala will give it to him on occasion after the first period eventually permanently.
  21. Lets put the shoe on the other foot, I keep hearing Americans on the Gulf Coast catching Speckled Trout. I am sure that a speck would last a matter of seconds in that warm salt water and they are really catching Spotted Weakfish.
  22. My dad grew up in Niagara and fished out of Port Colborne, I remember in the 50's he simply referred to them as Yellows, short for Yellow Pickerel, at the time I think the occasional Blue was still being caught. Yeah I always called them Partridge , but then turned around and and called their cousins Spruce Grouse , go figure.
  23. that is worse looking than this http://www.doobybrain.com/2008/02/01/chees...oked-and-eaten/
  24. The ducks are young Goldeneyes, they usually nest in hollow tree cavities like old woodpecker holes
  25. Have you tried browsing through this site? it is excelllent for old locally produced lures that may be found in grandad's tackle box. http://ontariolures.com/ontariolureslist.html
