Hey guys, I'm looking to see if I have things setup correctly in terms of outboard height and trim at wot. I raised my motor to the 3rd of 4 possible mounting holes and went out for a run. Top end was faster and rpms around 5800 (6000 max recommend) but noticed as I trimmed out a fair bit it started to ventilate. Still lots of water being pumped though. Looking down at the cavitation plate at wot and trimmed out to fastest speed the plate almost looked dug in on an angle towards the front of the boat. So I'm wondering: Do I need to raise the motor up one more hole and try it out - this way I can trim in more at wot to reduce that angle/drag and possibly some venting? (Presuming still getting water pressure and doesn't blow out in turns? Or does it sound like I'm close to the limit? Just wondering what else I should look out for as I dont want to hurt anything during the tweaking process . Thanks

I really like the older Princecraft 142/162/167 BT series (1996 to mid 2000's I believe) similar to this http://www.kijiji.ca/v-powerboat-motorboat/sudbury/princecraft-tiller-drive-with-40-hp-in-mint-mint-mint-condition/594193732 Very nice layouts and versatile little rigs.

thanks all. its not much rust, just a bit below the carpeted steps on the trailer. Spraying might be a bit of a pain so I'm thinking of brushing on. it will likely last me at least 5yrs with my light use and by that time might go with a new trailer. what kind of brush could I use to keep stroke lines to a minimum? Thanks

X2. I went through the same thing. Upgraded a 6hp single to a 9.9 twin when I had a kicker. However the lightest twin is around 20lbs heavier. If I had to choose a single cyl kicker it would likely be a late model merc or tohatsu as they have the through prop exhaust. not sure if other brands have that now. should at least make things quieter.

I'm going to sand and touch up my boat trailer which is painted white and made of steel. Was wondering what spray paint you guys would recommend for holding up for a few years? Thanks

Yamaha outboard service Brantford ares Recomendations?

bay city marine in hamilton are very good to deal with -
I would pick the hds 8 gen 2 or the hds 9 touch. big benefit on the 8 to have the quick access buttons on the bottom. the 9 has built in structurescan and has the touch screen. rebates on both right now. best value would be the 8 gen 2 out of the two models.

good points...usually only troll for muskie a couple time a year and use the electric for walleye trolling. but if the new one will troll down better might use it more. I agree I'm still dealing with a 17yr old motor if I run into issues down the road.

spring is almost here and I'm still thinking of upgrading my mid 90s merc 4 stroke 50 for a new yammy 60hp. I've been offered a good deal to trade the merc in. Just wondering if it make sense to upgrade. the merc runs well just doesn't have the bells that the yammy does. 10hp wont make a big difference on my boat. efi would be much smoother than the carbbed merc. plus new motor warranty etc. other element is I will likely only use the boat 10-15 times per year. what do you guys think?

yes that site looks interesting. anyone have experience buying from them? or anyone run a tiller with a bimini?
-
I'm looking for some options/opinions on putting a bimini top on a 16ft tiller. I've heard they can be more challenging to deal with as you are at the back where it usually is mounted. My boat would typically be trailered around so fixed mount likely isn't an option. If you have and suggestions or experiences with this setup please let me know. Thanks

isn't the terrain/equinox only rated for 1000 unless the trailer has its own breaks?
-
I agree here. I've towed a 1500lb boat motor trailer with a v6 escape rated for 3500lbs. even that worked quite a bit at times. could only imagine how much a crv would struggle with that kind of load.
-
In your case just having the motor at correct height may fix it. Otherwise a hydrofoil or smart tabs should get you the stern lift to plane it out under heavy load. You will likely gain some top end by having the motor at right height as well. edit: You could also play with different props but you would need a tach and would only make sense after the motor is setup correctly on the transom.
-
so the boat is a short shaft transom height then? the ss sea pro looks to be around 17.1in so still dealing with possible drag below the boat.
-
also is your transom exactly 20in high? check your motors manual I think you had a sea pro 25? the european version is 22.1in long for transom height. the us version may be that length too so it could be dragging a bit below the boat. if the motor is bolted on maybe you can raise it up a hole or two. if its clamped you would need to safely/securely find a way to raise the transom height. its a bit of a trial and error to find opitimum height. too high and the prop can cavitate especially on turns.
-
I would check to see where your cavitation plate is to in relation to the bottom of your hull. should be level or no more than 1 inch below the hull else it will cause drag. also consider an se sport 200 hydrofoil if your motor is compatible. I had similar issues on a small boat and raising the motor to right height off the transom and adding the hydrofoil fixed the issue. only lost about 1-2 mph off the top end by adding the foil but planes at lower speed now. smart tabs could be another option but not sure how they would fit or look on such a small narrow boat. sounds like they work well though.

yamaha also has a 100 rebate on 15/20hp right now or 2yrs extra warranty. bay city marine in Hamilton has been very good to deal with and they carry yamaha. I've dealt with Clarence there.

I went through this last year and ended up with a yamaha. Researched a bunch. I think the merc/tohatsu likely is the fastest due to gear ratio and displacement but didn't like the look and the twist grip shifter on the merc. Suzuki with efi is very appealing might be worth considering now its been out a couple yrs. The yammy has ran perfectly and very quiet. If I had to choose again I would consider the yammy or Suzuki. What issues have you heard with the yamahas? Definitely worth checking each make in person, check how the trim works, shifter position, and if you need manual or electric. some electrics don't have pull start on those hp if you want both. One other thing to consider is getting close max hp rating on the boat. If you are comong from a 2 stroke the equivalent 4 stroke will be slower out of the hole.

check out the marantz 1403 at future shop when on sale. good reviews its a 5.1 receiver and a small profile. also has 3yr warranty. the sony 840 also has good reviews online.

just compared ecus and part# is slightly different between f50 and f60.
-
certainly makes it intriguing to look at the 50 instead but a have a hard time believing the ecus are the same programming. Steve have you ever pulled the plugs to see if it's running lean?
-
Terrova for sure better steering easier to stow better pedal can use ipilot and pedal together
-
perfect. would I see decent fuel savings going from a carbed to efi model? anything you don't like about the yammy? How is the steering friction adjustment on it? thanks
-
My current motor is a 4 stroke. However the 60 hp is 20lbs heavier than my current 50. Thats too bad I wont get much more top end but having efi plus all the other goodies of the new motor are intriguing. Would imagine I would get significantly better mileage with efi vs 4 carbs? Does the yammy come with that pro tiller handle shown above?
