Is it me, or are fall spawn steelies getting their spawning colours really early? I've caught tons of rosy cheek'd fish, I thought they only got their spawning colours later in November (but I could easily be wrong, plz correct me). Either way those are some gorgous chrome's.

LOL with they way we have hammered Salmon and now Steelies, we will have enough Amundson promo material to start our own magazine. The last batch turned out great. Good thing ONE of us hooked into some big bows for those pics . I'll give you a call sometime this week for more floaterific and flysational good times.

I posted a salmon report not long ago and got a PM from some idiot flaming me and accusing me of snagging. I have zero respect for this individual, so I decided to keep posting. Flame on, flamer. Classless behaviour doesn't really deserve our attention. My dad always taught me to focus on the positive things in life, so I do. Many more steelehead reports to come!

Both of my parents were principals. Almost all of my family friends were somehow related to education. Now that I am a certified teacher, I think it's hilarious how parents attack teachers for their child's inability to perform at grade level. I'm certain in 95% of those cases, the parent's spend 0-10 minutes or less with their kids daily on improving/catching up. My mom was a teacher in my middle school down the hall from me before she became a VP. You wouldn't believe the ridiculous standards I was held to at school. Any, and all, of my indiscretions were brought to her attention, and boy did I hear about it. After hearing a story of juvenile misbehaviour like this, I see it as a failed opportunity to teach the kid about the seriousness of his actions, and the impact it can have on the entire community. The fathers reaction is what makes me sick to my stomach. Every good parent feels a sense of obligation not just to his own family, but the community as a whole. Unfortunately, some tight-knit "small town"-like communities are becoming unhinged by a new generation of abstract parents who raise their kids without consequences. -
I'd rather hook fish and lose them to tight cover than drift open pools any day of the week. Looks like a nice setup you have there. Grats on the fish and thanks for the report!

I like the spey for several reasons, but the most significant to me is I like to fish in tight cover. With the spey, I do a quick roll cast and I don't use much more space than a standard float cast. In the event I fish some bigger water, it has the weight to fire out pretty far, and I'm not the best long caster yet. Another thing is the flexibility, with the switch rod, I can get a float rig setup in a few minutes, and the rod is much smoother than my fulltime float rod. Its a 7 wt classic spey line with floating tip on. I tie a 2-3' 4-6 lb tippet to the leader, and then the fly. I had some great instruction from a guy who happens to visit this forum. He basically taught me the very basics and within 5 outtings I was retying, casting, and landing fish on my own. If you are interested, I can pass you his info.

With school finished and my OCT# in the mail, I have had ample time to get out and soak some lines before "real life" starts kickin in. Now that the salmon have finally started clearing out of the tribs, it was time for the chromies to shine. Was able to get out 3 times, went 8 for 13 over those three days, with the last outing providing 4 of those landed fish. Started out by myself. This was the only fish on the day. Here's a quick shore pic: Better luck this day. A bit downstream from above, this guy slammed my stonefly nimph and took me for a ride: Buddy showed up on time for a pic: I've upped my personal best twice so far this year, keep em coming. This is my current PB: Next, I see this one sitting under a log, visibly feeding. After trying unsuccessfully to get her to bite on an assortment of flies, I dropped my tippet line to 3lb, took off splitshots, and tied a single egg fly. First drift was like magic: Spey cast dropped 3 feet in from of it, fly slowly sinks, steelehead flicks it's tail and is off to the races. Amazing fight, especially because she didn't want to leave that log! Last but not least is the story fish. This was the most beautiful steelehead I've ever seen. Her scales were perfectly chrome, with no scratches or scars, and just a slight tinge of rose on her cheeks. Unfortunately she spat the hook at the shore and we only managed a single pic. I vividly remember how smooth it felt, the first time I used a float rod/reel. I get that exact same feeling everytime I set it down for the fly setup. I feel like I can cast twice as fast, have 10x the accuracy, have much more flexibility when it comes to presentations, and can still float a mean roe bag when the time is right. I don't know if I will ever go back. My goal is to get back out at least one other time this week and write up another report, thanks for reading!

Haha, you guys crack me up sometimes. Expect a 30th, overall. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Regarding Kessel, thanks for the one of the best finishers the leafs have had in a long time. He gave us a point last night, and will give us many points to come. Rask is unproven, give him a few seasons before you attempt this misguided trash talk. Toronto will have the last laugh, and Burke will continue to look like a genius. Keep that trash talk coming, whatever helps you sleep at night. GO LEAFS GO

Scott Stevens is one of the most solid defensive defencemen to play the game, and one of the best hitters of all time. Do you really think that one hit ended Lindros's career? How about the other 5 times he got serious concussions? Lindros was soft, he had his head down, and got punished for it.

haha that was awesome.

Saw a CO today on the creek at a popular eastern Lake O trib. He scared the crap out of me because he was sneaking in the forest taking pictures of some snaggers before he confronted them. The problem is, he (to the best of my knowledge) only ticketed 1 person then left. There were 10+ people snagging with treble hooks just downstream. Why show up to a creek without charging more people?

Not only that, the Senators looked AWFUL. If I was from Ottawa, I wouldn't be bringing attention to my failing team.

That is intense! Wow, I can't believe how the moose was responding to their challenge. This is definitely one of the most intense moose hunting video's I've ever seen.

Haha, I think you are bang on. He was drafted in the 2nd round, and while he was still playing for Belleville he was quoted in an interview as saying something very close to "I am going to bring a stanley cup to Montreal"... pure arrogance. I think that cockiness is part of his whole persona as a player. With all of the well spoken, classy rook's that have been coming up through the draft system in the past few years, it's certainly shocking to see PK mouthing off and other on ice tomfoolery. That being said, you gotta give the guy credit. He came up to replace Markov last post season, nailed his on-ice tryout with the big club, and he earned himself a core D spot for this season. He isn't doing rediculoulus spin-o-ramma's anymore either. Funny story about PK. I used to work in the pro shop at Canlan Ice Sports on Martin Grove. If I was working a Fri night shift, that was GTHL night, so on my breaks I would always go watch the AAA Marlies teams that would be playing. I vividly remember one game where PK was playing (I think he was minor midget back then). He started with the puck at his goal line. He skated full stream with the PK ignoring all of his teammates, tried a spinoramma at the opposing blue line, lost it, and gave up a 3-on-1 that lead to a goal. Google PK Subban and you will find scouting reports that talk about exactly this kind of scenario, haha. Anyhoo, all this talk about a Habs player is a real buzzkill. Keep it up leafs

Colton doesn't lose many bouts. He landed a few good ones, but got bonked pretty well. How 'bout Leafs' secondary scoring? I like what I see. Bring on the Rangers.

good luck!

Priceless. Reminds me of when I started lookin for apartments in Toronto...

Saw this years ago, very cool stuff by Les and his wife. If you like his documentaries google Off the Grid with Les Stroud. It follows him designing, planning , and building a new home for his family that is almost entirely self reliant. I built a simple rain water collecting system from stuff I learned from Les.

Done, Good luck! Can't wait for more pics

"Injuries" are sport wide... I was talking specifically to injuries to the leaf top line (practically their only source of scoring), and to their goalie, who has stood on his head. If Datsyuk goes down Detroit won't be hit as hard as a collective unit than if Versteeg does.

I don't know about what you guys are using, but this has changed how I will fish steelehead forever: http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=47597

It's hilarious how defensive these habs fans get when any discussion starts about leaf success. We had a brutal last season, the worst I've seen in my 23 years. This year however, (so far) they are playing dynamite hockey. Are we not allowed to celebrate in our teams apparent improvement? Nobody is talking cup (at least nobody that actually has played hockey and understands the game), we are talking progress. Sounds like you guys are shackin in your booties over there in MTL. As for the "see you in march" comment, many teams slump after the new year when playoff crunch time begins. All it takes is one injury to giggy, or to any of either Bozak, Kessel, or Versteeg to slow the leafs down, but until then if you are proud to wear blue and white, wear it proud. Thus far I have really enjoyed watching Schenner play with more confidence, Kaberle finally realized that his stick is capable of doing something other than passing, and Komi is destroying bodies in the corners. Kessel isn't doing the same cookie-cutter play off the top of the left circle, curling towards the net and letting go a snap shot, and Versteeg is showing why he was one of the largest contributors to the Chi town cup run. The kids got heart. That being said I think I will actually pay attention to the marlees this season, based on their potential for major development in a few key players. The leafs big club are already looking like one of the fastest teams in the league (see how they made the sens look like a bunch of geriatrics? lol). Just wait until Kadri , Caputi, and D'Amigo start playing the PP together. As for the habs, I respect the crap out of PK Subban. I played with this kid at Runnymede Collegiate and I know how much of a riot he can be in the dressing room. Not only that, he has made 200% improvement from a season ago. That 76 would look great in blue and white. /hockey rant

Dave knows his stuff. The fact that some meat heads use certain rigs to produce snagging situations doesn't necessarily mean that the rig itself has no legitimate benefits. I don't fish stillwaters often but I can certainly see how this would be ideal for steelehead
