  1. the shaking and bumps wont kill the minnows, you just have to worry about busting the bag. when i get my minnows i always ask to double bag it and double band it. i put my minnows in my tunnel bag but i know not everyone has a tunnel bag. i would then just put them in the back compartment or if you got a backpack i'd place them on the top. minnows are a pretty tough and i've had them last overa week in the bag and with hardly any water.
  2. seems like an ok idea but theres to many situations where its useless and seems big and bulky and more of a pain bringing it to the lake. good idea just needs to be improved.
  3. i definitly worked hard to get into that lake to catch my first laker of the year. i blazed a nice trail for everyone else so its now easy riding in. pikeie who is your buddy that fishes it all the time, i may know him. also when you head back to the sault go with your buddy in there, its some awesome fishing back there for lakers and also specks and theres even a lake back there with rainbows. its always a great time if you can make it in!
  4. thanks for the replies. i wasnt execpting a huge laker yesterday but was execpting a few average ones but not making it to the lake i wanted to i wasnt execpting to many but more then one haha!! i'll definitly will be reporting again soon and hopefully more pictures. i have to start bringing the cam with me. lakers are definitly my fav winter fish to 90% of my winter will be lakers. one of my post will be of a big laker! gavin
  5. So ive been all jacked the past couple weeks for jan.1st lakers. I had in mind a great lake for them just north of the sault called crooked lake. i went there alot last year and between me and my buddy we would pull 20-30 lakers in a day. My buddy was off in edmonton for the holidays so me and my brother went venturing up into there. Now to get into this lake is a little tough, you gotta go through the bush following this little path at times can just fit a snowmobile. So im following the trail and someone was already breaking in. and i caught up to them. there was 2 guys on tundras that have never been up in there before and they had just picked some of those lakes back in there cause they are on the mnr stocking list. and they half lost with their gps cause it doesnt not show the trail and theres all downed trees and it barely even looks like a trail. So they made a path for me and i went breaking in with my new polaris rmk 700 giving it the true test as to what it can do. i was so hot and sweaty i left my helmet and my gloves and i was just givinger nonstop. i finally made it to clearwater lake and i waited for the others to follow my path. my face and hands were all scratched up from the trees hitting me but it felt good being the first one in. i drilled holes in the ice to check the ice and there was 12" but 3/4 of that was slush pockets. we had got wayyy to much snow and not enough cold snaps. and by the looks of the trail with still open creek, mud holes, etc. So i decided to play it safe and not venture any farther because between clearwater and crooked its just one big swamp with open areas all year round even during the coldest winters and i wasnt gonna chance sinking my sled in a swamp or someone else following me through the swamp thats not aware. So we stayed on clearwater fishing with the guys with the tundras. We only managed the one laker and the other guy missed one. It was kinda disapointing that we worked sooo hard for one little fish. later in the afternoon we broke trail into a speck lake near by and try it for an hour or with no luck so we packed up and headed it home. i hope you enjoyed my little write up. this is the first one of 2009 and there will be alot more to follow throughout the year! Gavin
  6. maybe their lures just cant handle our canadian fish
  7. welcome back! what an awesome laker! i hope to get one that big this year!
  8. i just got ubuntu not to long ago, im still learning all the ropes and its actually pretty neat and is turning out to be better then any type of windows i ever used. there are endless possibilities with it. i have not tried any games with my computer yet but i setup my printer and i installed software for downloading maps to my gps and it seemed much easier then windows. when downloading things like flashplayer, limewire, etc and you just have to pick the linux version. if you cant figure out how to do something on it there are forum sites just type in ubuntu forums in google and theres a bunch of them. there are tons of nerds out there that know their way around any problems and they seem pretty helpful. good luck!
  9. ya my laptop crashed randomly one day and having a gateway they have it so you cant reload any type of windows so i took it to my buddys dad and hes a real computer geek and he put linux on my computer, i'm still learning all the ropes but its seems to be the right choice as a quick and easy alternative
  10. http://www.carpenterlakecabins.com/how-to-...-lake-trout.htm thats the "traditional" way,the way grandpa use to catch them. http://www.chapleaulodge.com/lake.htm this is a newer better way! when going for specks either use grandpas traditonal gold spinner with red beads and a worm/minnow or try small spoons like little cleos, EGBs, williams, etc for inland rainbows same setup as specks but increase the size of spoons, bait, etc.
  11. just download linux ubuntu for free and all problems will be solved!
  12. i know for pike the rapala xrap #14 did wonders and i dont see why a musky would goggle that lure up to. also for spoons the lucky strike super flash.
  13. you need more #8 slashbaits for smallies. have you used these lures before? they all look brand new, mine are all destoryed haha all scratched, changed hooks, nothing left of the tail feathers lol. you also dont have any silver/blue ones. i found the silver/blue xshad rap killed the bass in the spring. also start getting doubles of the top producers.
  14. thanks alot northhunter! you couldnt have said it any better. this is my exact thinking, you explained it way better then i ever could.
  15. its some real good stuff. i always get the gralic and butter and i wash the fillets and just put them in the powder no egg or anything then just fry them up in oil
  16. i got a medium light fast action shimano rod. its nice and light and really sensitive. i've used it from speck fishing, smallie fishing and i've even gone pike fishing with it and caught a 15lb with the rod. its sooo much fun compared to the bigger rods, i just started using it all the time, it seems to give the fish more of a chance only using 8 or 10lb mono then the ultra braid lines. try catching kings on that setup hahaha!!
  17. great goals guys! nobody has a plan to catch a pb or anything?
  18. i can fillet a tiny little pike but the amount of meat i get off it just wasnt worth keeping the fish. i say you should be aloud to keep 3-4 pike 3-7lbs then maybe one big one depending on the lake and once it reaches so big your not allowed to keep it. personaly if i only went out to fish to catch and release i'd pretty much just stop going. fishing is sooo much fun and its also nice to bring something home and fish tastes soooo good! or just be able to keep 3-4 pike of any slot size, arent the small ones the future? and the lake is reproducing so that means the lake is doing well?
  19. i have no problem about the reg over 34inches. i just feel you should be aloud more in the 3-7lb range and also ppl taking fish to small. what about changing the reg to only 3-4 pike of any size. i find the pike under the 24" slot size just arent worth keeping and should be released to grow big
  20. specks and pike are totally different. to me they seem like a fish that just wont go away or kill off in a lake. most anglers i know dont keep any pike cause they dont think they are good eating mainly cause they dont know how to clean them so they are released. pike dont seem to get much fishing pressure in my area while walleye get hit hard.
  21. yes i know they are there but what is the reason?
  22. you dont exactly need a new years resolution or have to stick with it. more of what are you short term(one year) fishing goals. and good to hear barbless get out and often you need to make up for 2008!
  23. hahaha you better have a good 4x4 truck or 4wheeler cause im a wild driver in the bush haha
  24. hey everyone, what are your fishing new years resolutions? do you to catch a pb species of fish? try a new lake or a number of lakes? target a new species? etc etc. my new years resolution for 2009 is catching a personal best laker. i also want to mainly target specks this coming soft water season. i want to hit them hard almost every weekend. i have a pile of speck lakes/ponds i want to try. and my last is to catch a new species, not sure what yet. so whats yours?
