The sil I refer to is the actual pickled herring, in jars, in the different types of marinade. I may be using the Swede name for it. In desperation I can always look for a Suomi Aitta, or the nearest IKEA. How does this sound. A piece of hard rye, with a layer of cream cheese and a piece of sil on top. Washed down with a generous mouthful, or two, of beer.

(you are welcome?) I regret My Finnish and Swedish is limited to cordial greetings. Gramp was a Swede, Gram a Finn from Karjala. THe solution was that we all spoke English. You wouldn't happen to have a good recipe for making Sil? A few of the oldtimers would make it here using smelts. All this reminescing has started up a craving for some pulla, rissa puri and some Lingonberry Brandy, or Peder Heering to wash it all down with.

Commercial fishermen have always caught sturgeon in their nets. In the old days they were laid out on a farm field and plowed in as fertilizer. During the depression folks would wait for the boats to come in and hope they had caught a few sturgeon in the nets. One fish put a lot of meat on the table. Just because it isn't pretty doesn't mean it don't taste good

There was a warm glow to the old naptha lamps that propane doesn't have. Maybe its just my imagination. Growing up, we did not see hydro or flush toilets til 1970. We had a couple of the smaller green lamps in the kitchen and hallway, but the main room had 2 big lanterns hanging from the rafters. The story was my uncle had 'liberated' them from the railroad. I used to listen to the old timers tellin their tales under the warm glow of those old lamps. The conversation got louder and much livlier as the men passed the bottle around. In the background there was the crackle of the fire from the old pot belly stove, and the aroma of baked goodies or biscuits heating up. See what a simple picture can conjure up. I'd give just about anything to step back into time and sit in that room one more time on a Friday night and add my tales to those of the other Suomalainen. Thank you for kindling a real warm and fuzzy with this thread Tack sa mycket or Kiitos

You can write it off your taxes, but it's still gonna hurt your bottom line unless you can get your customers to eat a 20% price hike everty 2 years. You still have less to put in your pocket. Writing the MP is a way to make noise. Unfortunately, my MP ( a real blue) does not like me any more, and probably has my e-mail address on auto delete.

Notice how fuel prices are not an election issue. That's because the folks in both the red and blue corners have been bought and paid for. Every time the price spikes, their stock portfolios get prettier, and we get poorer.

I don't believe anglers are allowed by the docks any more. Problems with vandalism and liability. Too early for the whirlpool. Send Paul at Cast Adventures a pm. He knows the river, upper and lower, very well. Puts you on fish.

Sometimes the best fishing is when the skies just open up and dump buckets on you. After 15 minutes I don't even notice the rain too much. Glad you had a successful outing.

I haven't heard #2 in years. I guess I'll clean off my screen and keyboard now. There's just something foreign about buying fish unless it is in a can or jar.

Highway #69 is the center of the fishing universe From the Waubushene flats right up to the waters of Nippissing and the French.

Its a great way to spend long nights. Its that or get cuddly with the Mrs. ( good thing she doesn't scan this site

You were tired of hearing Port D was the centre of the fishing universe?

For under $200 total? Pfleuger President reel. A good, dependable mid range reel. Not overly expensive $70ish. I"ve put mine through a lot of abuse in 2 years. As for the rod, if you are fishing walleye more than bass, lighter is better. I use a 5' light or ultralite for walleye. For bass It all depends on the style of fishing. Do you need a finesse rod or a tow truck and 50lb. cable? All I can suggest is find a rod that feels comfortable in your hand and has good sensitivity. There are a lot of good rods out there, and a lot of people have deep brand loyalties.

Drifting is still my prefered means of searching out fish on new water or in tough conditions. I use the trolling motor for position control. When there are more than 2 in the boat, it also allows everyone an equal shot at fishing without snagging one another casting. Lots of people still drift fish. I must make 1000 harnesses a year for people (of course, 50 are just for me)

Your rods will gather more dust laid out horizontally.

In all honesty, I'm an NFN refugee, like numerous others here. Was first interested in OFC because, I was told, it was the best site for ice fishing info. Joined this site because I like the volumes of fish talk as opposed to Bull and the screams of vegetarian fishermen

We're not so far removed from the simpler animals that like to collect shiny things, like some birds or packrats.

Whether you pirate a satellite signal, or from a cable line, its still the same thing. Theft.

The one tree, alone would heat my house for a month. Pity.

Had a neighbour like that. Spliced his cable to a 110 outlet to teach him a lesson. It cost him a whole lot more in the end.

Something wrong there Cliff. I'm paying $120 for Phone, cable and highspeed with Cogeco. I got tired of calling India to speak with Bell 'Canada' Cogeco has been reliable.

There is also the debate over where the fry are released. Fry were originally released in a trib or stream to give them time to imprint on the body of water. This would help establish natural replenishment and breeding. Current practice with Pacifics merely sustains a put and take fishery. Fry are released off the harbours and piers with no chance to imprint on a suitable trib for spawning. Possibly to free up tribs for the Atlantic program and more trout.

Yet another 'girl shows guy how its done report." I love it. My wife still thinks fishing is a guy thing.
